The St. George ribbon, worn to commemorate the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, was first introduced in the 18th century as the highest military decoration for valor.
Following Russia's annexation of the Black Sea peninsula Crimea in March last year, the tricolor ribbon has also become an almost obligatory accessory for pro-Kremlin patriots.
With 16 days left until the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, the Volontery70 volunteer organization has launched a mass campaign to distribute more than 20 million St. George ribbons across Russia.
The Moscow Times took to the streets of the Russian capital to ask people what the ribbon means to them.

Thousands of Muscovites gathered close to Moscow's Poklonnaya Gora (Worshipful Submission Hill) on Saturday to commemorate those who have died during the Ukraine conflict, including victims found in mass graves near Donetsk earlier this week.
The rally paid tribute to all victims that have died during the conflict in Ukraine, including those who were killed during the Maidan clashes in Kiev, as well as the victims of the Odessa massacre.
Around 5,000 protesters came with DNR and LPR flags, St. George Ribbons and flags of Russian political parties to express their solidarity and patriotism. After a minute of silence the participants laid down flowers and placed candles in front of the Tragedy of Peoples monument.

4 Dec.2014 - Highlights of Putin's annual Presidential Address to the Federal Assembly in the Kremlin's St. George's Hall, Moscow, Russia.
"Russia is open to the rest of the world and ready for developing equal partnership with other countries, said Vladimir Putin He dismissed treatment Russia through strength and sanctions as ineffective and warned against scheming.
“Talking to Russia from a position of strength is meaningless,” said Putin in his annual state of the nation address to the Federal Assembly, stressing that the ‘deterrence policy’ towards Russia is nothing new.
“The deterrence policy was not invented yesterday, it has been always conducted towards our country, for decades, if not centuries,” Putin noted.
“Every time somebody considers Russia is becoming too powerful and independent, such instruments are turned on immediately,” said Putin.
US manipulating foreign relations of Russia’s neighbors
The US has always been, either directly or behind the scenes, affecting relations between Russia and its neighbors, the president said.
“I’ve mentioned our American friends for a good reason,” Putin said. “Because sometimes you don’t even know to whom it is better to talk to: the governments of certain countries or directly with their American patrons.”
ABM is a threat to US itself
Further deployment of America’s global anti-ballistic missile defense poses a threat to the US and those European countries that agreed to host it, because it builds up a dangerous illusion of invincibility, Putin said.
“This [ABM] constitutes a threat not only to the security of Russia, but to the whole world, in view of the possible destabilization of the strategic balance of powers. I believe this is dangerous for the US itself, as it creates a dangerous illusion of invulnerability and reinforces the tendency of unilateral, often ill-considered decisions and additional risks,” Putin said.
The European Phased Adaptive Approach, a centerpiece of the US missile defense shield in Europe, implies deployment of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, all of which are fitted with the Aegis weapon and radar system, interceptor batteries in Poland and Romania, radar in Turkey, and a command center at Ramstein, Germany, a US Air Force base.
Russia considers the system to be a major threat to its own security and has threatened to increase its own arsenals and missile shield piercing capabilities in response.
Russia says ‘no’ to arms race
Russia will not get involved in an expensive arms race, the president said, yet the country’s defensive capacity in the new conditions will be securely guaranteed.
“There’s no doubt about that – consider it done. Russia has both the capacity and creative decisions to do so,” Putin said.
Yugoslavia-style disintegration scenario for Russia failed
Russia has fought off attempts to initiate its disintegration, similar to the scenario applied to the former Yugoslavia, Putin said.
“They would make us follow the Yugoslavian scenario, with its disintegration and dismemberment of territory, with great relish and with all the resultant tragic consequences for the peoples of Russia. No way. We prevented it,” he said.
Putin also recalled the fate of Adolf Hitler, who also planned to destroy Russia, and the Nazis’ misanthropic ideas.
“Everyone should remember how that ended,” Putin said. "

Russia and America are on the verge of war - but forget Star Wars and espionage - the former superpower enemies are now fighting over chickens.
Russia has cried foul over frozen chickens imported from the United States. Now it has unilaterally suspended shipments and is threatening to ban them altogether.
The Vysotsky poultry factory in St Petersburg used to be one of the largest in Europe, producing up to 17 million chickens a year.
But production fell sharply after 1991 when the government stopped subsidies and raised taxes.
It also coincided with the huge influx of frozen chicken parts from the United States, dubbed "Bush's legs" after the American President, George Bush.
What began as food aid in the dying days of the Soviet Union has now turned into a multi-million dollar market to US exporters selling cheap chicken to hungry Russians.
Under the weight of such competition, poultry factories all over Russia have almost ceased production completely, laying off hundreds of workers.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It's mainly because of the Bush's Legs imported into Russia that the factory has been closed. The competition was too much.
SUPERCAPTION: Sergei Danilov, chief of Vysotsky Abbatoir
Companies like "Frozen Foods" have been the main beneficiaries of an import business worth $500 (m) million yearly.
One of the four largest Russian importers of U-S frozen meat and poultry, the company imports and distributes over 10,000 tons of chicken each month.
Any ban would ruin their trade but the General Director of this company is confident that the Russian authorities will back down because of the poor quality of domestic chickens
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There is no Russian chicken! No Russian chicken! I know that the name of Russian chicken in every Russian family is "blue bird". Because very small... No quality, no quality.
SUPERCAPTION: Pavel Svirsky, General Director "Frozen Foods"
But Russian poultry producers beg to differ on the question of quality.
The chickens on display at one of Russia's largest private markets are plumper than those in the local shops.
These women are adamant that their chickens are healthier than "Bush legs" because they use no additives and are fresh.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We feed ours a good mix - carrots, beets, everything they need. That's why our homegrown chicken from the country is better than theirs.
SUPERCAPTION: Olga Radnikova
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Ours are tastier. Less fat, less cholesterol. Tastier all round. Theirs is deep frozen and ours is fresh.
SUPERCAPTION: Ella Volkova
If Russia does ban the import of US chickens, it is extremely unlikely that its own factories could satisfy what has become a massive demand.
At Kentucky Fried Chicken's (K-F-C) Moscow restaurant, they use only imported chicken because they say they can be certain of both quality and quantity.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We've looked closely at several Moscow factories and we are not satisfied either with the quality or with the sanitary conditions.
SUPERCAPTION: Oleg Mayorov, Manager K-F-C
If Russia is serious about the ban, it will have to invest heavily in technology and marketing to bring its poultry industry into the modern age.
And if the ban goes into effect on March 16, these Russian chickens will likely become the first victims of the new cold war.

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

Travel video about destination Moskva in Russia.
Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe. Both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. It has witnessed much change and has become a prosperous city and one of contrast and the superlative, of millionaires and also the very poor. Vasiliya Blazhennovo Khram, Basilius Cathedral, is one of the main landmarks of the Russian metropolis and was built at the command of Moscow sovereign, Ivan The Fourth, also known as Ivan The Terrible, Russia’s first Tsar. The cathedral is representative of Moscow’s architecture with red brick monuments and an accumulation of onion-shaped towers. The Kremlin extends beyond a red wall and various towers that date back to the fifteenth century. Since time immemorial it has been the seat of both tsars and bishops and in front of its walls is Red Square that was once used as a marketplace and also a place of execution. Here the death penalty was declared and immediately carried out. Arbatskaya is a city district west of the Kremlin. In the fifteenth century, the craftsmen and servants of the Tsar lived there and then followed artists, intellectuals and aristocrats. In 1935 the Metro was inaugurated and had thirteen stations. Today there are more than a hundred located along two hundred and sixty kilometres of rail, used by millions each and every day. The Moscow Underground is fast, cheap and quite splendid. Its stations are veritable works of art! When the Tsar’s empire vanished, the realm of the Communist rulers was torn apart. But the mega metropolis of Moscow managed to survive. A restless and powerful city of fantastic culture and truly dramatic history.

Its stations are veritable works of art! When the Tsar’s empire vanished, the realm of the Communist rulers was torn apart. But the mega metropolis of Moscow managed to survive. A restless and powerful city of fantastic culture and truly dramatic history.

St Petersburg lies around 400 miles to the Northwest of Moscow. Nestled on the Neva River, it spreads out from its banks and across a series of islands that lie within the river delta.
With a wealth of extravagant palaces, breathtaking cathedrals and magnificent gardens, St Petersburg is truly Russia’s Imperial city.
Carved out of swampland in the early 18th century by Csar Peter the Great, St Petersberg has been gilded by generations of Russian royalty.
Over the centuries, this dynasty sought to create a city to rival the greatest cities of Europe, and, as you step onto the cobblestone streets here, you’ll discover they succeeded.
Most visitors start their adventures right in the heart of historic St Petersburg. Palace Square is dominated by the Alexander Column and is home to the Winter Palace.
This monumental palace is a legacy of Catherine the Great and was designed to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. Today it houses the State Hermitage Museum which is one of the world’s oldest and largest museums.
Experience some of the country’s most extravagant architecture by strolling along Nevsky Prospect, the city’s main avenue.
Visit the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, with its extraordinary mosaics,… and Kazan Cathedral, another architectural gem.
Further along the river is St Isaac’s cathedral, whose gold plated dome has been glittering under Russia’s sun for more than 100 years.
As the sun sets, take a canal cruise to discover the romance of St Petersburg at night. Pass through a network of draw-bridges on a journey that shows the true scale of Peter the Great’s vision.
Romantic, opulent and spectacular, St Petersburg is a glittering testiment to Russia’s royal history and a celebration of the power of one man’s dream.

Take a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russian Federation -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
It looks more like a cluster of brightly colored hot air balloons than a cathedral.
This is St. Basil's, or the "Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin By the Moat".
This flamboyantly shaped and colored building is one of Russia's most important churches.
The cathedral was started in 1555 as eight chapels built around a larger ninth.
There have been several theories about the design of St. Basil's, but no certain answers.
The cathedral has had several additions, and the whole church narrowly escaped destruction under Stalin.
St. Basil's is no longer a church, it now operates as a museum.

Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia making it the world's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its unique architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly colored domes. With over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, it is one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world, having the largest forest in an urban area within its borders—more than any other major city—even before its expansion in 2012. In the course of its history the city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Soviet Union. Moscow is considered the center of Russian culture, having served as the home of prestigious Russian artists, scientists and sports figures during the course of its history and because of the presence of many different museums, academic and political institutions and theaters. Moscow is also the seat of power of the Government of Russia, being the site of the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence of the Russian president. The Moscow Kremlin and the Red Square are also one of several World Heritage Sites in the city. Both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in the city.

In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in the swampy delta mouth of the Neva River. It became Russia’s capital city and remained so until 1918 when Lenin and his revolutionary Bolshevik government moved to Moscow. Today, it is a living monument to the lives and times of Russia’s Imperial Tsars. The Winter Palace contains Russia’s largest museum, The Hermitage, which houses more than 2.5 million exhibits. Since Peter the Great, Russian rulers purchased many major works of art, but it was Catherine The Great who acquired complete collections from the auction houses of Europe. The Admiralty, with its needle-shaped, gold-plated tower, is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, its grand architecture depicting the emergence of Russia as a naval power. The marvelous Saint Isaac's Cathedral has the third largest dome in the world. Twenty-four thousand tree stumps were used for its foundations, and it can accommodate a congregation of 14,000.The Peter And Paul Cathedral was the burial place of the Tsars, and it contains the marble coffin of Peter the Great. The most colorful church in Russia is the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral which was built on the orders of Tsar Alexander III on land where, in 1881, his father, Alexander II, had been killed by a bomb planted by a revolutionary group.Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg, a city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale.

People would go and help.''

STORYLINE:
A blanket of smog was still shrouding Moscow on Sunday, with the worst smoke cover the Russian capital has seen in the past week.
Muscovites coughed and choked and the smog reduced visibility to a few metres. The sun shone pink through the haze, and grey smog filled houses, offices and even the subway.
On Friday night a light rain cleared the air bringing some respite to the city. But the relief was short-lived, and the smog cloud has since returned with a vengeance.
Meteorologists warned that more substantial rain would be needed to put out the forest and peat bog fires blazing around Moscow.
The weather was expected to remain dry on Sunday, but some rain was forecast for early next week.
Carbon monoxide level in Moscow are more than twice admissible levels and doctors suggested people stay indoors if possible.
Meanwhile, Muscovites distrust the authorities' explanation for the fires. Claims that more than 4,000 local officials were to blame have been greeted with skepticism on the streets of Moscow.
There was also criticism that little has been done to prevent the fires spreading and that no volunteer force was called out.
According to the Russian Emergency Situations ministry, fires covered more than 1,500 acres around the capital as of early Sunday, many of them underground in smoldering peat bogs.
Fire fighting efforts involved 3,500 people and four aircraft, which dropped 550 tons of water.
The area around Moscow has registered its lowest rainfall in a century and the smog was the worst the city had seen in 30 years.
Meanwhile, criticism is growing over the environmental impact of weather manipulation, which is common in Russia.
For example, last weekend, the Moscow government air dropped chemicals on clouds in an effort to prevent rain from falling during celebrations marking the 855th anniversary of the capital's founding.

STORYLINE:
A huge cloud of smoke, from forest fires east of Moscow, has enveloped the Russian capital this week.
On Sunday, flights at two Moscow airports were disrupted for several hours because of the reduced
visibility and fire fighters are making little headway in putting out the fires.
00 02 It's late summer in Moscow, but it's looks more like midwinter.
00 06 A blanket of smog has been shrouding the Russian capital for more than a week.
00 11 But in the last day or so, it's got worse.
00 15 Muscovites coughed and choked their way around the city with visibility reduced to just a few metres.
00 21 FX firehose
00 24 The smoke's coming from forest and peat bog fires which are burning on the outskirts of the city
00 30 FX chainsaw
00 32 More than three and a half thousand people are working round the clock fighting the fire.
00 37 But peat bog fires, in particular, are notoriously difficult to extinguish.
00 41 Weather forecasters say heavy rain is needed to put them out for good.
00 45 FX man talking
00 48 This man says he loves the smell of smoke when it comes from roasting meat, but this smog doesn't give anyone any pleasure.
00 56 Far from being pleasurable, many people with breathing difficulties are at risk from the dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide .
01 03 With some rain forecast for next week, there might be some respite on the horizon.
01 09 But until then, Muscovites will have to get used to their hazy view of their city.

- Grete Wehmeyer, Satie - RowohltMonographie, 1998, S.106.

ENGLISH version:
For 70th anniversary of the Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov his students and friends performed "Vexations" by French composer Erik Satie, 1866-1925.
This piano composition from 1893 should be played 840 times - such as "prescribed" by Satie. In Moscow, the performance took place on the street in front of the Conservatory. It began on 16 September at 17h and ended on the 17th at 16h, so took a total of 23 hours. Alexei Lubimov itself was starting.
The here compiled clips document only the 50th part of the total performance, but create such a slight trancelike effect and above all, combine with the impressions of the environment.-
An effect in the sense of Satie, the "inventor" of "musique d'ameublement" - furniture music - in his own words: "...a music, which will be part of the noises of the environment, will take them into consideration. I think of it as melodious, softening the noises of the knifes and forks, not dominating them, not imposing itself, It would fill up those heavy silences that sometimes fall between friend dining together. It would spare them the trouble of paying attention to their own banal remarks. And at the same time it would neutralize the street noises which so indiscretely enter into the play of conversation." - John Cage, Silence, 1961, p.70 -
