Plot: Marx Reloaded is a cultural documentary that examines the relevance of German socialist and philosopher Karl Marx's ideas for understanding the global economic and financial crisis of 2008-09. The crisis triggered the deepest global recession in 70 years and prompted the US government to spend more than 1 trillion dollars in order to rescue its banking system from collapse. Today the full implications of the crisis in Europe and around the world still remain unclear. Nevertheless, should we accept the crisis as an unfortunate side-effect of the free market? Or is there another explanation as to why it happened and its likely effects on our society, our economy and our whole way of life? Written and directed by Jason Barker - himself an experienced writer, lecturer, translator and doctor of philosophy - Marx Reloaded comprises interviews with the world's leading philosophers of Marxism, including those at the forefront of a popular revival in Marxist and communist ideas. The film also includes interviews with skeptics of this revival as well as light-hearted animation sequences which follow Marx's adventures through the matrix of his own ideas.

Slavoj Zizek: A communist society would be a society where everyone would be allowed to dwell in his or her own stupidity. You know who gave me this idea? Even Fred Jameson who said what if you imagine communism not as a perfectly normal society but, like a crazy society that you find on some Bruegel painting/proverbs, you know. A madman here that is a man thinks that is a man who thinks he is a chicken, there is a man who thinks he is Napoleon, you know. All these madmen politely existing wouldn't it be nice?

In fact, their friendship is so strong that Blackie murders an attorney threatening to derail Wade's bid to become Governor. The morally straight Wade's last job as D.A. is to convict his friend of the murder, and send him to the electric chair. After he becomes Governor, Wade has the authority to commute Blackie's death sentence-- a decision that pits his high moral ethics against a lifelong friendship.

James W. 'Jim' Wade: You know, I think those yes-men would go to bed with me if they had a chance.::Eleanor Packer: Don't worry, Darling, they won't have a chance.
Edward J. 'Blackie' Gallagher: Don't commute me - I don't want it. Hey, look, Jim, if I can't live the way I want, then at least let me die the way I want.

Eleanor Packer: Now, now Blackie, Blackie don't do anything foolish!... Blackie?::Edward J. 'Blackie' Gallagher: [Chuckles] Did I ever do anything foolish?
Edward J. 'Blackie' Gallagher: Well I'm not dressed for company!
Edward J. 'Blackie' Gallagher: Die the way you lived, all of a sudden, that's the way to go. Don't drag it out.
Edward J. 'Blackie' Gallagher: You better cross yourself, Manny, and make it double, because this is once you doubled-crossed yourself.

From Mexico between 1937 and his assassination in 1940
"Stalin's trial against me is built upon false confessions, extorted by modern Inquisitorial methods, in the interests of the ruling clique. There are no crimes in history more terrible in intention or execution than the Moscow trials of Zinoviev-Kamenev and of Radek-Piatakov. These trials develop not from communism, not from socialism, but from Stalinism, that is, from the irresponsible despotism of the bureaucracy over the people!
"What is now my principal task? To reveal the truth. To show and to demonstrate that the true criminals hide under the cloak of the accusers. What will be the next step in this direction? The creation of an American, a European and subsequently, an international commission of inquiry, composed of people who incontestably enjoy authority and public confidence. I will undertake to present to such a commission all my files, thousands of personal and open letters in which the development of my thought and my action is reflected day by day, without any gaps. I have nothing to hide! Dozens of witnesses who are abroad possess invaluable facts and documents which will shed light on the Moscow frame-ups. The work of the commission of inquiry must terminate in a great countertrial. A countertrial is necessary to cleanse the atmosphere of the germs of deceit, slander, falsification and frame-ups, whose source is Stalin's police, the GPU, which has fallen to the level of the Nazi Gestapo."

Stalinism and Bolshevism - 1937 (Leon Trotsky)
One of the clearest rebuttals to those who claim that Stalinism is the natural outcome of Marxism and Bolshevism. In responding to anarchists, Mensheviks and other critics who were using Stalin's Moscow Trials as a pretense to attack Bolshevism, Trotsky presents the theoretical heritage which only the Fourth International was able to defend: "an analysis of the imperialist epoch as an epoch of war

He thanks Cardenas for allowing him to go from being held 'under lock and key' in Norway to being able to talk freely in Mexico. He says that Stalin's trial against him is based on false evidence. This is based on Stalinism - 'the irresponsible despotism of the bureaucracy over the people." He wants to show his personal files to an independent inquiry to prove himself innocent. He wants a counter trial.

Seventy-five years ago, on August 20, 1940, Leon Trotsky was assassinated by an agent of the Soviet secret police, the GPU, in Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City, where he was living in exile. Thus ended the life of the great Marxist theoretician of world socialist revolution and one of the towering figures of modern political history.
The assassination of Leon Trotsky ranks among the most politically consequential crimes of the twentieth century, with far-reaching and long-enduring consequences for the development of the international working class and the world socialist movement. And yet for decades the circumstances surrounding Trotsky’s assassination remained shrouded in secrecy. The massive scale of the Stalinist conspiracy against Trotsky—in particular, the extent of the penetration of the Trotskyist movement by the GPU—was the subject of a carefully orchestrated cover-up.
In 1975 the International Committee of the Fourth International launched the first intensive and systematic investigation by the Trotskyist movement into the 1940 assassination. This investigation, known as Security and the Fourth International, led to the exposure of the network of GPU agents within the Fourth International—especially in Paris, Mexico City and New York—which ensured the success of Stalin’s conspiracy against Trotsky’s life. The International Committee’s investigation was bitterly opposed by Pabloite and pseudo-left organizations, which denounced the exposure of spies placed inside the Trotskyist movement as “agent-baiting.” This has remained their position, despite the fact that state intelligence documents released following the dissolution of the Soviet Union confirmed the findings of the International Committee and vindicated Security and the Fourth International.
David North, the chairman of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site, has been a major figure in the international Trotskyist movement for forty years. He played a central role in the Security and the Fourth International investigation. In these international on-line interviews, WSWS correspondent Andrea Peters will speak with North about the significance of Trotsky’s assassination, the origins and development of the International Committee’s investigation, and its key findings.
The interviews will take place on Saturday, October 3 and Saturday, October 10 at 1:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (Time zone conversions). Alexander Linklater has summarized Hitchens' intellectual outlook as follows:
One of [Hitchens'] old strongholds [was] the 17th-century contest between king and parliament of the English civil war. For Hitchens, the Cromwellian revolt represents not just the foundational struggle for parliamentary rule, but the great rejection of divine right. ... But he is no optimistic Enlightenment rationalist. He identifies himself with Thomas Paine's disillusion at the French terror, and Rosa Luxemburg's famous warning to Lenin about the inexorability of one-man rule. He retains, however, from his Marxist youth an intellectual absolutism and a disdain for liberal dilemmas and trade-offs -- hence a brutal assault on Isaiah Berlin's genteel liberalism in a 1998 essay. He is incurious about what religious belief feels like, or what meaning it has for millions of people -- even though, unlike his co-anti-religionist Richard Dawkins, Hitchens concedes that religious feeling is ineradicable.
Hitchens became a Marxist and a Trotskyist in his teens, beliefs that further developed during his time at Oxford University. In the 1960s Hitchens joined the left -- specifically the International Socialists -- drawn by his anger over the Vietnam war, nuclear weapons, racism and "oligarchy", including that of "the unaccountable corporation". He became a socialist "largely [as] the outcome of a study of history, taking sides ... in the battles over industrialism and war and empire".
But by 2001, Hitchens had disavowed socialism, declaring "capitalism is the only revolutionary system".[2] In the same year he told Rhys Southan of Reason magazine that he could no longer say "I am a socialist". Socialists, he claimed, had ceased to offer a positive alternative to the capitalist system. Capitalism had become the more revolutionary economic system, and he welcomed globalization as "innovative and internationalist". He suggested that he had returned to his early, pre-socialist libertarianism, having come to attach great value to the freedom of the individual from the state and moral authoritarians.[3] Although by 2004 he described himself as "a recovering ex-Trotskyite",[4] in a 2006 debate he remarked that "I am no longer a socialist, but I still am a Marxist".[5]
Hitchens, as recently as 2009, again referred to himself as "a Marxist". Hitchens continued to affirm his respect for Marxist theory, including his 2009 article for The Atlantic entitled "The Revenge of Karl Marx". There he explains how Marx's economic analysis in Das Kapital has predicted many of the failures of the U. S. economy, including the late-2000s recession. In a June 2010 interview with The New York Times, he stated that "I still think like a Marxist in many ways. I think the materialist conception of history is valid. I consider myself a very conservative Marxist". He continued to regard both Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky as great men, and the Bolsheviks' October Revolution as a necessary event in the modernization of Russia.

Actor Jay Baruchel is very un-Hollywood. When he's not working in the U.S., he lives a few blocks from his childhood home in Montreal. He's a "bonafide patriot," committed to balancing roles in big-budget films (She's Out Of My League, Tropic Thunder, Knocked Up) with independent Canadian pictures.
His latest is The Trotsky, by writer/director Jacob Tierney. Baruchel plays Leon Bronstein, a Montreal West high school senior who thinks he's the second coming of Leon Trotsky, modeling his life--down to the older woman and the death by ice pick--after the Red Army icon. He starts with trying to unionize his dad's (Saul Rubinek) company, then, after being banished to public school, he takes on the board establishment.
Baruchel is as passionate as the quirky character he plays, chatting about committing himself to Canadian cinema at the tender age of 12 and wacky American politics.
Q: Everybody in the U.S. seems to think Canadians are socialists. How do you feel about now telling everybody we're communist?
I'm fine with that. I'm an avowed liberal. The [U.S.] could do with a dose of socialism.
Q: What's your take on Leon--is he delusional, eccentric or both?
He's definitely both. Leon is the epitome of the earnest youth... He's sort of meant to symbolize in one dude that period in your life where you pick your causes--or your causes pick you--and you'll be more passionate than at any other time.
Q: There's always one guy in high school who seems too wise or too oddball. Were you that guy?
I might have been that guy had I not gone to fine arts high school. Believe it or not I was one of the more alpha males in high school. Our school had a lot of discourse, we called teachers by their first names, that sort of thing. But I remembered what it was to be that passionate about something. I still have that knee-jerk feeling, I still have those causes.
Q: Leon is fairly cerebral. There's a lot of wordplay in this movie. Was it tricky to wrap your tongue around all the politicizing?
A hundred and fifty per cent. When I first read the script I was scared s***less of playing Leon. He's verbose and uses a particular brand of wordplay. Jacob had a clear idea of what he wanted and I didn't want to step on that, so it was all about finding my way into Leon's skin... With Leon there's not a moment of pretense.
Q: Genevieve Bujold said you're "full of talent, vulnerability and an inspiring madness and light."
No way! Really? One of the biggest thrills of my life was getting the chance to work with Genevieve Bujold and Colm Feore. Holy Moses--that's going to be a very big deal for my mother.
Q: You've been in major Hollywood films, but you've also been consistent with taking on roles in smaller, Canadian films. Why?
I can honestly say that the smaller movies have been the most fulfilling work of my life. I'm a bonafide patriot... my priority is being home, and then making movies. Growing up I was left with the impression that our celebrities only wanted to perform for us when they couldn't get jobs in the States, which doesn't curb the cultural apathy in this country. As corny or cheesy as it sounds, I elected to give myself to Canadian cinema at 12 or 13... I'm a very odd bird.

One of the clearest rebuttals to those who claim that Stalinism is the natural outcome of Marxism and Bolshevism. In responding to anarchists, Mensheviks and other critics who were using Stalin's Moscow Trials as a pretense to attack Bolshevism, Trotsky presents the theoretical heritage which only the Fourth International was able to defend: "an analysis of the imperialist epoch as an epoch of wars and revolutions; of bourgeois democracy in the era of decaying capitalism; of the correlation between the general strike and the insurrection; of the role of party, soviets and trade unions in the period of proletarian revolution; in its theory of the soviet state, of the economy of transition, of fascism and Bonapartism in the epoch of imperialist decline, and finally in its analysis of the degeneration of the Bolshevik party itself and of the soviet state." http://www.wsws.org/articles/2008/oct2008/stal-o20.shtml
