A wave of violent attacks hit Turkey on Monday, with four police officers killed in the south east and a bomb blast in the largest city, Istanbul. Separately, two assailants opened fire outside the US consulate in Istanbul, but no one was injured or killed. The four police were killed by a blast on a road in Sirnak province. Shortly after, gunmen opened fire on a military helicopter, killing one soldier. Tension between the Turkish government and Kurdish militants has been rising. Turkey also recently announced it was taking a more active role against Islamic State militants. It is not known whether the two attacks in Istanbul are connected. The US consulate attackers fled when police shot back, but one of the two assailants, possibly a woman, has now been arrested, reports say. The consulate said in a tweet that it was closed until further notice. Two suspected militants have been killed in clashes with police in the district of Sultanbeyli where the attack on the police station took place, reports say. Exchanges then continued throughout the night as other militants fired on the police station. One policeman was also killed in the clashes, reports say. The explosion in Silopi, in Sirnak province, left four police officers dead and one seriously injured. One soldier was killed and another injured when their helicopter, also in Sirnak, came under fire. Turkish helicopters have also been bombing PKK targets.

The Turkish bombing raid lasted one hour early on Monday, in an area inside Iraq along the country's northern border with Turkey, said Jabbar Yawar, an undersecretary for the ministry governing Kurdish protection forces known as peshmerga. The area includes the towns of Khnera, Khwakurd and Sidakan in Irbil province, he said. Yawar said there were no civilian or peshmerga casualties in the mostly abandoned area. Turkey has frequently targeted members of the PKK, in cross-border raids into Iraqi territory, where thousands of the rebels are based. The PKK reportedly uses its strongholds in northern Iraq for cross-border strikes into Turkey. Since December 16, the Turkish military has confirmed four cross-border aerial raids into Iraq. Iraqi Kurdish officials, however, have reported other air strikes by Turkish jets, but those have never been confirmed by Turkey. Turkey's military says the raids have inflicted heavy losses on the PKK, killing as many as 175 rebels and destroying command and logistic centres, shelters, and ammunition depots. The rebel group is believed to have a large base in Khnera, where Turkish planes struck on Monday. It was unclear whether the base was damaged. On Sunday, Turkish troops killed 10 separatist Kurdish rebels in clashes in southeastern Turkey, according to a Turkish military official. In Istanbul, thousands of students took to the streets to protest against the attacks which left up to 30 soldiers dead in the past two weeks, officials said. Students marched through the country's largest city, waving Turkish flags and calling for government action against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. The protest came a day after the Turkish military said on its Web site that more than 30 rebels were killed. The rebels denied any casualties, calling the military statement a lie, the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency said. An Iraqi delegation held talks with Turkish officials on Friday to deal with a growing crisis over Iraq-based Kurdish rebels, even as Turkish war planes and Cobra helicopters reportedly bombed separatist hideouts in the border region inside Turkey. State-run Anatolia news agency said the aircraft attacked suspected rebel positions that were detected during reconnaissance flights. There were no reports of guerrilla casualties. The eight soldiers were released on Sunday, a day before the Turkish prime minister holds a meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush that is expected to play a pivotal role in whether Turkey launches attacks on guerrilla bases in northern Iraq. Though rebel leaders said the move was meant as an olive branch, experts said it seemed unlikely to soften Turkish demands for tough action against the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, which has killed more than 40 Turks in cross-border raids in the past month. Turkey has ruled out talks with the PKK, and has dismissed past overtures by the rebels as attempts to improve their image or undercut Turkish military and political pressure. Still, the soldiers' plight has featured daily in Turkish newspapers, and their release removes one of the hot-button issues that has been putting domestic pressure on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to launch a cross-border operation against the rebel bases in northern Iraq. And the timing - on the eve of Erdogan's meeting with Bush in Washington - was no accident. Northern Iraq-based PKK commander Murat Karayilan told the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency the rebels released the soldiers to make clear that they want to solve the Kurdish problem with peaceful means and methods. Wide of military helicopter taking off STORYLINE Military activity continued on Friday in Turkey near the border with Iraq, just one day after Ankara warned it will decide whether to cross into Iraq in pursuit of Kurdish militants, regardless of US objections. AP Television filmed soldiers on foot patrols in Sirnak, near the border, sweeping for mines and securing the roads as military helicopters flew overhead. In Diyarbakir, AP Television filmed military helicopters taking off and landing at the Air Base in the country's southeast. Tanks and military vehicles lined up in streets surrounding the base. The Bush administration is urging Turkey not to launch an incursion that would destabilise Iraq's autonomous Kurdish north, Iraq's most stable region. Top Iraqi officials arrived in Turkey, on Thursday, as part of frantic efforts to persuade it not to send troops over the border, and the US ambassador to Iraq sent American diplomats to join the delegation. But Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the US desire to protect the north would not hinder Turkey's fight against militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. One soldier in Sirnak Province told AP Television on Friday: "We will take revenge for any blood spilt by martyrs," he said. Militants use mountain bases in Iraq to rest, train and receive supplies in relative safety before returning to Turkey to carry out attacks against government forces in the heavily Kurdish southeast of the country. The Iraqi government has promised to shut down offices used by rebels. But Turkey wants Iraq and the US to destroy their main bases and extradite the rebel leadership to Turkey. Turkey has called for both an incursion and economic measures against northern Iraq if its demands are not met. The self-ruling Kurdish administration in Iraq's landlocked north relies heavily on Turkish investment and fuel imports. Turkey still seems willing to refrain from a major cross-border action until at least early next month, when it is scheduled to host foreign ministers in Istanbul to discuss Iraq. However, Turkey's military and civilian leaders are facing growing demands at home to launch an offensive. Turkish troops have killed hundreds of Kurdish rebels since 1 January, the state-run Anatolia news agency said, citing military sources. It did not say how many Turkish soldiers have died, but about 30 troops have been killed this month alone. Soldiers supported by armoured vehicles carried out a patrol in Ikizce near Sirnak and also performed a mine sweeping exercise in Kasrik Passage in the Cizre district of Sirnak, close to the Turkish border with Iraq. Last week Turkish helicopter gunships attacked abandoned villages inside Iraq, according to Iraqi officials, in the first air strike since border tensions escalated in recent months. The United States and Iraq have pressured Turkey to avoid a large-scale attack on Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq, fearing such an operation would destabilise what has been the calmest region in the country. But tension is growing in Turkey over the separatist Kurdish guerrillas, and the Turkish military is preparing for a possible cross-border offensive against their rebel bases. Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that intensified military action against Kurdish rebels was unavoidable. But he also suggested that he was not seeking an immediate cross-border military operation against the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, that are holed up in bases in northern Iraq. Turkish helicopters, meanwhile, pounded rebel positions near the border with rockets for a second day on Tuesday, and Turkey brought in troops by the truckload in an operation against mountainside emplacements. Despite a recent wave of public protests across Turkey calling for action against the PKK, some residents of Sirnak were apprehensive about the possibility of a cross-border incursion into neighbouring Iraq. "We don't want fighting at (Mount) Cudi, we want brotherhood," one man told AP television. "Habur Gate (border crossing between Turkey and Iraq) is our livelihood, it is better for us that it stays open," said another man. PKK fighters have killed at least 44 people in the past month, according to government and media reports. Those casualties include about 30 Turkish soldiers in two ambushes that were the boldest attacks in years - increasing domestic pressure on Turkey's prime minister to act. Turkey has demanded the extradition of PKK leaders, and has threatened otherwise to stage a cross-border military offensive in northern Iraq to hunt down the rebels itself. The United States, Iraq and other countries have called on Turkey to refrain from a cross-border campaign, which could spread disorder in one of the few stable areas in Iraq. A Turkish incursion would also put the United States in an awkward position with key allies: NATO-member Turkey, the Baghdad government and the self-governing Iraqi Kurds in the north. The Kurdish government said theft and sabotage targeting an oil pipeline running to the Turkish sea port of Ceyhan has cost it around half a billion dollars. A section of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline, running from northern Iraq to Turkish ports, was bombed in southern Sirnak province in Turkey in late July. The pipeline has a maximum capacity of around 400,000 barrels of oil per day and serves as a main artery for the export of oil from the Kurdish north of Iraq. The Kurdish Ministry of Natural Resources said attacks, as well as pilfering, on the pipeline are a threat to the welfare of its constituents. The ministry said in a statement, "The estimated revenue loss to the Kurdistan Regional Government caused by such attacks is $251 million. State of Emergency Declared St. Louis County has declared a state of emergency in the town of Ferguson after anti-racism protests turned violent. The protests marked the one year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man shot dead by a white police officer. During the incident on Sunday, police officers shot and critically wounded an 18-year old black man named Tyrone Harris. Authorities say he was involved in an exchange of gunfire. Riot police held back 200 protesters on the street where Brown was shot. Bashar al Assad’s Cousin Arrested Syrian state media says President Bashar al Assad’s cousin has been arrested. Suleiman al Assad is accused of shooting and killing an air force colonel during a road-rage incident in Latakia on August 6th. The officer’s death set off protests over the weekend in Latakia’s provincial capital. Latakia is home to the largest number of Syria’s Alawite minority. Theyı ’ve been one of Assad’s biggest supporters and the town remains mainly under the control of the Syrian regime. One of the Istanbul attacks, on the US consulate, was carried out by two women and linked to a far-left group.One of the female assailants in Monday's attack was wounded and detained, and a rifle and other weaponry were seized, Istanbul's governor said in a statement. She is said to be a member of a radical Marxist group, the Revolutionary People's Liberation Front (DHKP-C). The DHKP-C previously claimed a 2013 suicide attack on the US embassy in the capital, Ankara. The US consulate said in a tweet that it was closed until further notice. In the other attack in Istanbul, on a police station in the district of Sultanbeyli, a car bomb was detonated, injuring 10 people, including three police officers. Two suspected militants were killed in ensuing clashes with police and an injured police officer died later in hospital, reports say. PKK conflict Following the attack on the military helicopter in Sirnak province, Turkish helicopters bombed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets in retaliation. A ceasefire in the long-running conflict with the group appeared to disintegrate in July, when Turkey began bombing PKK camps in northern Iraq, at the same time as launching air strikes on IS militants. PKK leader Cemil Bayik has accused Turkey of trying to protect IS by attacking Kurdish fighters. "They are doing it to limit the PKK's fight against IS. Turkey is protecting IS," he told the BBC in an interview. Kurdish fighters - among them the PKK - have secured significant victories against IS militants in Syria and Iraq. But Turkey, like a number of Western countries, considers the PKK a terrorist organisation.

Turkish troops were also shelling suspected PKK camps in the regions of Kanimasa, Nazdur and Sinath, in northern Iraq, from positions in Turkey's Hakkari province, just across the border, Hurriyet reported. Residents of a Kurdish village near the border said their village was "bombarded by Turkish army artillery" late on Monday evening. AP Television on Tuesday filmed smoke rising from the mountains surrounding Dera Loc - located in Irbil which is one the three northern provinces of Iraq's Kurdistan autonomous region. Recent tensions have fuelled rumours on both sides of the border that the crossing would be closed - causing panic among area residents. Communities on both side of the border are heavily dependent on cross border trade - which accounts for much of the area's economic revenue. "We don't want war. All the people here are suffering because of that," a man from Cizre, a Turkish village near the border, told AP Television. Gule Uysal, who claims to be the sister of PKK member killed in 1992, called on "Turks and Kurds to come together and find a way out". "Our brothers, uncles, fathers get killed because of this war," she added, holding up a photograph of her dead brother. Turkey signed a counter-terrorism pact with Iraq in September and had demanded it be allowed to send its troops to Iraq's north to pursue Kurdish rebels. Turkey’s Electoral Threshold Turkey’s upcoming June 7th election is widely perceived as the most interesting one in the past 13 years since the incumbent AK Party first came to power. The possible entrance of the pro-Kurdish HDP to the Turkish parliament is expected to have a major impact not only in politics, but also the Turkey’s future. The dynamics of the parliament are bound to a change if the HDP exceeds Turkey’s ten percent electoral threshold. This would make the HDP a key player and allow the party to influence decision making. The possibility of the HDP entering parliament would open a new chapter in Turkey’s political scene, albeit an uncertain and complicated one. The AK Party could still form a majority government since it is thought that the party has guaranteed enough votes to gain more than 276 seats in the parliament even if HDP exceeds the threshold. However, AK Party aims to get at least 330 seats to enact the legislation needed to bring about the presidential system it wants for Turkey. If the HDP passes the threshold while other parties continue to oppose the changes, the HDP’s stance on the issue will be decisive. If the HDP fails to enter the parliament, then the number of seats controlled by the AK Party could reach as much as 350. Coalition Against AK Party The possibility of HDP overcoming the electoral threshold has also raised hopes for Turkey’s mainly idle opposition parties already in the parliament as each vote for HDP counts as one more step to distance AK Party from implementing the presidential system. The three main opposition parties with different backgrounds generally have contradictory political stances and it is very rare that they agree on a certain issue. In a recent case, HDP rally in northern province of Samsun was almost hijacked by supporters of nationalist party. However, these parties appear to have decided to unite in opposition to block the ruling AK Party from carrying out its desired change to the presidential system. But, the electorate does not favour coalition governments as they have led to severe instability in Turkey in the past. Rivalry Down to AK Party-HDP As the key factor of the election is whether the HDP will overcome the threshold or not, the main battle for votes is expected to take place in the eastern and southeastern parts of the county between the governing AK Party and HDP. The amount of votes for the HDP in the east would likely not be enough to pass the threshold but the HDP has also campaigned in the western provinces and major cities of Turkey to attract more integrated Kurds and secular voters. In addition to that, Turkey has witnessed some pro opposition columnists openly call the supporters of the CHP, to vote for HDP and help the party to pass the threshold, just to weaken the governing AK Party. The increased number of Kurds living in western part of Turkey increases the HDP’s chances of exceeding the electoral threshold. The eastern provinces of Diyarbakir, Mardin, Batman, Sirnak, Hakkari and Van are where HDP collects the majority of its votes, but the party also aims to increase votes in other eastern provinces where Kurds are less affiliated with it and mostly favour conservative parties including the AK Party.
