Prerromanesque Art - 4 Irish Art
The Prerromanesque period, which extends between the V century to XI century, is considered divided into two periods. The first corresponds to the VIII century, bounded by the Moslem invasion and the beginning of the reign of Charlemagne. This is the art of the barbarians established in the western provinces of the Roman Empire. The second period is started in France with the Carolingian Renaissance, which links to the first Romanesque art in Catalonia, France and Italy, and the art of the Asturian kingdom in Castile.
Irish art began being influenced by the celtic culture, seen even in prehistoric works like the newgrange, where you see celtic decoration. Christianism came to Ireland in V century, and it mixed with the celtic tradition. An example of this is the Carndonagh Cross.
The manuscripts are important, you can see an evolution here. First they were more geometric and not very coloured, like the Book of Durrow, but later it changes, when they expand to England and Scotland, and it is more coloured, like in the Gospels of Lichfield and the Book of Kells, that even represent a man, presented as Christ, an angel, apostle...
Jewelry is also important, and you see the celtic influences. Symbol of richness.
The irish art doesn't finish here. The viking invasions of IX century influenced their art. But that is other tale...
