Arnold Schwarzenegger Blasts Indiana's Anti-Gay Law

3 April 2015 3:20 PM, PDT

Indiana's religious freedom law just got a very powerful new enemy: the "Governator" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The former California Governor - an outspoken Republican - expressed his anger and disappointment over what he sees as his party's discriminatory agenda in an op-ed for the Washington Post. "I'm incredibly concerned about what happened in Indiana this week and the threat of similar laws being passed in other states," he wrote, adding, "As a Republican, I'm furious." Schwarzenegger is referring to the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, signed into Indiana law on Thursday by Republican Governor Mike Pence. Those who oppose the See more »

The Walking Dead Boss Vaguely Promises We Haven't Seen the Last of [Spoiler!]

Chin up, Walking Dead fans. All hope might not yet be lost.  Tonight's episode of the AMC zombie blood fest was possibly the most devastating episode yet as fan-fave character Glenn (Steven Yeun) might have bitten the dust.  The way the horrific scene was filmed, it was kind of unclear as to whether he was actually dead. He's probably dead, but you had best believe we will cling to even the slightest possibility that Glenn might not have just had his organs ripped out by walkers.  No one involved with the show appeared live on tonight's post-episode Talking Dead, See more »

Theater Review: The Complex, Funny Sadness of The Humans

just now

Great plays are usually great in one of two ways. Either they are culminating examples of existing ideas, or groundbreaking examples of new things entirely. The Humans, by Stephen Karam, at first seems like it will be one of the former. It situates itself squarely in the long-established theatrical tradition of family-at-the-holidays plays, and is absolutely, relentlessly gripping as such. That’s no small achievement, given the familiarity of the genre, which goes back at least as far as Thornton Wilder’s 1931 one-act The Long Christmas Dinner and has at this point devolved into a young playwright’s throat-clearing See more »

Maureen O’Hara obituary

Irish-born Hollywood star known for playing fiery heroines happy to stand up to men

In the early 1950s the prevailing image of Maureen O’Hara, who has died aged 95, was one of a feisty heroine, red hair blazing, who was more than a match for her male co-stars. Big John “Duke” Wayne, whom she partnered in five films, said of her: “I’ve had many male friends in my life except for one, O’Hara; and she’s a great guy.” The great director John Ford, with whom she also worked so often, referred to her as “a man’s kind of woman”.

“We Just Did Long Takes Every Time”: Hou Hsiao-hsien on The Assassin

23 October 2015 9:16 AM, PDT

“It is more important to observe and listen.” Despite the intense philosophical disposition many critics have discerned in the work of Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien, the 68-year-old filmmaker often seems very uninterested in the thematic choices behind his films. Instead, he often appeals to the tenet of cinematic realism. See more »
