Gravel-voiced granite man-of-noir Charles McGraw stars in this classic flick about crime and passion, taken and shaken with a twist. McGraw plays "Honest" Joe Peters, a Los Angeles-based insurance detective gifted with a mind for graft but a soul for the straight and narrow, making him a natural at his job. It all starts to go south for Joe when a lithesome chiseler named Diane (Joan Dixon) uses him as a soft touch to take an airline for a ride. Joe falls hard for the dame, but she's shooting for the World Series and he's pitching for the bush leagues. Faster than you can spell "Walter Neff," Honest Joe is cutting a deal with local racketeer Kendall Webb (Lowell Gilmore) and laying out the greatest train heist of the 20th Century. Unfortunately for Joe, his insurance detective partner (Louis Jean Heydt) is a straight shooter and Diane's heart hides some unexpected turns.

Louis Jean Heydt
Louis Jean Heydt (April 17, 1903, Montclair, New Jersey – January 29, 1960, Boston, Massachusetts) was an American character actor in film, television and theatre, most frequently seen in hapless, ineffectual, or fall-guy roles.
Early life
Heydt was born in 1903 (not 1905, as many sources have it) in Montclair, New Jersey, the son of German parents George Frederick Heydt, a jeweler and the secretary and executor for Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the former Emma Foerster.
He was educated at Worcester Academy and Dartmouth College. He initially wanted to be a journalist and worked as a reporter for The New York World. Heydt received his start in the theatre while visiting a classmate backstage while The Trial of Mary Dugan was in rehearsal. As an actual reporter, he caught the attention of the producers and was offered the role of a reporter in the play. He made his stage debut therein and went on to appear in a dozen plays, including Strictly Dishonorable, Before Morning and Happy Birthday. He also played in the London company of The Trial of Mary Dugan.

At the end of the Mexican-American War, a crooked U.S. Cavalry Captain (Davis) and his men force a captive Mexican officer to sign the deeds over at gunpoint to his large hacienda and vast lands and large hacienda. They rule a frontier empire until a frontier judge (Louis Jean Heydt) and a quick on the trigger U.S. Marshal begin to investigate.

Louis Jean Heydt
Louis Jean Heydt (April 17, 1903, Montclair, New Jersey – January 29, 1960, Boston, Massachusetts) was an American character actor in film, television and theatre, most frequently seen in hapless, ineffectual, or fall-guy roles.
Early life
Heydt was born in 1903 (not 1905, as many sources have it) in Montclair, New Jersey, the son of German parents George Frederick Heydt, a jeweler and the secretary and executor for Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the former Emma Foerster.
He was educated at Worcester Academy and Dartmouth College. He initially wanted to be a journalist and worked as a reporter for The New York World. Heydt received his start in the theatre while visiting a classmate backstage while The Trial of Mary Dugan was in rehearsal. As an actual reporter, he caught the attention of the producers and was offered the role of a reporter in the play. He made his stage debut therein and went on to appear in a dozen plays, including Strictly Dishonorable, Before Morning and Happy Birthday. He also played in the London company of The Trial of Mary Dugan.
