There is an uneasy calm over insurgency-hit Manipur, which has completed a year - 2014 - with the lowest number of killings in clashes between security forces and militant groups. But the peace may be deceptive; it comes after a Supreme Court committee indicted armed forces for a series of fake encounters, leading the forces to disengage. But an informal ceasefire has not led to any movement towards justice for the victims of fake encounters. In fact, our investigation finds continuing attempts to bury the truth and obstruct justice at every level, often using the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. As long as there is no justice, peace in Manipur may be an illusion.

A wedding, for many, brings thoughts of love, family gatherings, tradition and beautiful attire. It is just the same for the people of Manipur.
Situated in the northeastern corner of India, Manipur is known for its handicrafts and festivals, and is also known for its beautiful hills, flowers and pristine natural beauty. Manipur is home to 33 distinct tribes. With diversity so great, one is sure to find many treasures… One such is the traditional Manipuri wedding known for its grandeur and fusion of colour, culture and tradition born of a mixture of elements of Hinduism and age-old Meitei culture.
For any bride, her bridal attire is an important part of the wedding. A Manipuri Hindu bride wears a dress called potloi, which is usually red and consists of layers of heavily starched cotton cloth, embellished with mirrors, beads and sequins made of brass. With this, the bride wears an intricately embroidered blouse of dark green suede.
The outfit is completed with a golden head dress called jhapa which is decorated with motifs of small butterflies. It is said that the jhapa was introduced by Rajkumari Bor Saheb Ongbi Sanatombi Devi.
The groom’s attire consists of a white cotton dhoti or wrapped pants, kurta and a turban, locally known as kokyet. The turban is made of starched hand-woven cloth, decorated with silk lace in some cases. Earlier only noble men were allowed to wear the silk lace, however today it is be worn by most people.
Both the bride and groom wear white clay tilaks, locally known as chandan. Vaishnavites - or followers of Lord Vishnu - use a patterned tilak, which is drawn from the forehead to the tip of the nose.
Before the groom leaves for the bride’s house, he seeks the blessings from the local deities of the Meiteis - Sidaba mapu, Goddess Leimar enbi, Lord Sanamahi, Lord Pakh angba followed by seeking blessings from his own his parents. He then sits on a mat, in the verandah of his house, and performs certain rituals. He touches paddy, rice, gold, silver, honey, milk and other items placed in front of him. These items represent the basic material needs of life.
After the completion of this ritual, the groom starts his yatra or journey to the bride’s home. A band of musicians leads the procession followed by a row of married women carrying earthen pots or gifts. Then come the bridegroom and his friends followed by the rest of the groom’s party.
At the wedding venue, three married women - all closely related to the bride - receive the groom. The reception is held with people holding burning sticks, throwing paddy into the fire, while the priest chants mantras.
The entire ceremony takes place in the courtyard of the bride’s maiden home, around the sacred tulsi or the holy basil plant.
The wedding ceremony is held while singers and drummers perform the nata sangkirtana, a dance that has now been given a UNESCO heritage status.
With the breathtaking landscape of Manipur as the backdrop, it is a little wonder that a Manipuri wedding is truly colourful and memorable.

Manipur is a fascinating state with an incredible diversity in cultures, landscapes and ideas. Nestled in the north-eastern periphery of India, Manipur lies on the passage that makes it the gateway to South East Asia. Manipur has absorbed and amalgamated within its indigenous culture, the cultural diversities that traveled to it from other parts of India, Myanmar & South East Asia. What we find in Manipur is a beautiful mix of cultures and traditions spanning a history of over 2000 years.
This short video was made during my time volunteering on the lake. It is a humble attempt to share a place and initiative that needs our attention and support.
Loktak, literally translated, means the place 'where the rivers meet'. It is one of the most interesting places in our country and the world at large. Home to the only floating National Park in the world, the lake also has homes that are floating around. Located right in the heart of Manipur, the lake is about an hour away from Imphal, the capital city. It is a must visit for anyone traveling to Manipur.
The magic of Loktak has been a well guarded secret where life moves slowly but resolutely. The people here represent the spirit of resilience and continue to live harmoniously sustaining this unique ecosystem. Loktak is the largest fresh water lake in the North East of India spanning an area of 286 Sq Kms. It is also home to the Sangai Deer, the Manipuri Brow Antlered Antelope, only found here on the Keibal Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world. The Lake is also home to a wide array of bird life, both resident and migratory.
Loktak is also home to a variety of fish with over 30 different fishing techniques which further support multiple crafts. Fishing is the lifeline of the community. The life on the lake is fascinating to observe with the floating huts, the fisher folks and their interactions with the lake and each other.
You can visit Manipur and Loktak from October to March with Nov, Dec and Jan being the best months.
Loktak Ecological Development Organisation (LEDO) a local community based organisation is working closely with ACT (Association for Conservation and Tourism) to promote responsible tourism in the region. The organisation is also working actively to protect this unique ecosystem to sustain their livelihoods. Responsible travel is one of the tools they are using to create awareness about the issues threatening the lake as also to generate sustainable livelihoods for the local communities.
LEDO has developed various interactive tourism activities to engage the discerning traveler. Learning about fishing techniques, learning to cook local delicacies, day with local musicians, wildlife boat safaris, volunteer opportunities, etc are some of their unique offerings. Travelers can stay at homestays with local families and enjoy their incredible hospitality.

Myanmar, CTN travel with me 30 april 2015. Burma (Listeni/ˈbɜrmə/ bur-mə), officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and commonly shortened to Myanmar (Listeni/ˈmjɑːnˌmɑr/ myahn-mar,[5]/ˈmjænmɑr/ or /ˈmaɪænmɑr/, Burmese pronunciation: [mjəmà]),[nb 1][6][7][8][9] is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. One-third of Burma's total perimeter of 1,930 km (1,200 miles) forms an uninterrupted coastline along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Burma has a population of 51 million people. Burma is 676,578 square kilometres (261,227 sq mi) in size. Burma's capital city is Naypyidaw and its largest city is Yangon.
Early civilizations in Burma included the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu in Upper Burma and the Mon in Lower Burma. In the 9th century, the Burmans of the Kingdom of Nanzhao entered the upper Irrawaddy valley and, following the establishment of the Pagan Empire in the 1050s, the Burmese language, culture and Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. The Pagan Empire fell due to the Mongol invasions and several warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunified by the Taungoo Dynasty, the country was for a brief period the largest empire in the history of Southeast Asia.[12] The early 19th century Konbaung Dynasty ruled over an area that included modern Burma and briefly controlled Manipur and Assam as well. While Burma is regarded as a Buddhist nation, many religions have peacefully co-existed throughout the centuries. The British conquered Burma after three Anglo-Burmese Wars in the 19th century and the country became a British colony. Burma became an independent nation in 1948, initially as a democratic nation and then, following a coup in 1962, a military dictatorship. While the military dictatorship formally ended in 2011, most of the party leaders are former military officers.
For most of its independent years, the country has been engrossed in rampant ethnic strife and a myriad of Burma's ethnic groups have been involved in one of the world's longest-running ongoing civil wars. During this time, the United Nations and several other organisations have reported consistent and systematic human rights violations in the country.[13][14][15] In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed. While former military leaders still yield enormous power in the country, Burmese Military have taken steps toward relinquishing control of the government. This, along with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners, has improved the country's human rights record and foreign relations, and has led to the easing of trade and other economic sanctions. There is, however, continuing criticism of the government's treatment of the Muslim Rohingya minority and its poor response to the religious clashes.
Burma is a country rich in jade and gems, oil, natural gas and other mineral resources. In 2013, its GDP (nominal) stood at US$56.7 billion and its GDP (PPP) at US$221.5 billion. The income gap in Myanmar is among the widest in the world, as a large proportion of the economy is controlled by supporters of the former military government. As of 2013, according to the Human Development Index (HDI), Burma had a low level of human development, ranking 150 out of 187 countries. Read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma
