Narendra Modi is the first Indian prime minister to have been born in an independent India, and many see his premiership as representing a new chapter in the country’s history. He took office in May last year following the election victory of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is usually described as ‘Hindu nationalist’. Indeed, some saw the BJP’s defeat of the once-dominant Congress party as a decisive break from the ‘secular idea of India’ that had prevailed since independence. Nevertheless, enthusiasm about Modi seemed to have as much to do with the prospect of more development, and less corruption, than any surge in Hindu communal feeling. Modi’s promise of acche din (good days) stuck a chord with Indians who had tired of the Congress party’s ‘povertarian’ low horizons.
Indeed, if Modi’s government is ‘right wing’, it is arguably in the sense of being pro-business, rather than chauvinistic. While some BJP state governments have banned beef, and Hindu nationalists have been agitating to ‘reconvert’ Muslims and Christians to Hinduism, Modi himself has kept his focus on development. To the consternation of some on the traditionalist Hindu right, Modi cultivated foreign investment as chief minister of Gujarat, and seeks to do the same at the national level. There have even been U-turns on policies the BJP was against in opposition, such as allowing foreign direct investment in retail. But if anything, the public mood is one of frustration with the slow pace of change. An India Today poll on the anniversary of Modi’s election victory found his reforms were not keeping up with public expectations, but that Indians at least felt things are moving in the right direction.
The goal is a return to the high rate of growth India experienced in the 2000s, and that has been elusive ever since. Some argue the problem is the persistence of a legendary bureaucracy, which goes back to the days of the ‘Licence Raj’ before India’s economy was liberalised in the 1990s, and provides a fertile environment for corruption. Modi’s promise of ‘Minimum government, maximum governance’ captures the aspiration to transcend all that and get India moving. But how successful has his government been so far, and what is the outlook for the years to come? Will a return to growth benefit the masses, or simply create profits for foreign investors? Will minorities suffer under BJP rule, or can Indians unite behind a shared vision for the future?

Why India Is an Emerging Market/Economy: Global Power, Business, Investment (2001)

The Economy of India is the seventh-largest in the world by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). The country is one of the G-20 major economies, a member of BRICS and a developing economy among the top 20 global traders according to the WTO.
According to the Indian Finance Ministry the annual growth rate of the Indian economy is projected to have increased to 7.4% in 2014-15 as compared with 6.9% in the fiscal year 2013-14. In an annual report, the IMF forecast that the Indian Economy would grow by 7.5% percent in the 2015-16 fiscal year starting on April 1, 2015, up from 7.2% (2014–15).[30][31]
India was the 19th-largest merchandise and the 6th largest services exporter in the world in 2013; it imported a total of $616.7 billion worth of merchandise and services in 2013, as the 12th-largest merchandise and 7th largest services importer.[32] The agricultural sector is the largest employer in India's economy but contributes a declining share of its GDP (13.7% in 2012-13).[6] Its manufacturing industry has held a constant share of its economic contribution, while the fastest-growing part of the economy has been its services sector — which includes, among others, the construction, telecommunications, software and information technologies, infrastructure, tourism, education, health care, travel, trade, and banking industries.[7]
The post independence-era Indian economy (from 1947 to 1991) was a mixed economy with an inward-looking, centrally planned, interventionist policies and import-substituting economic model that failed to take advantage of the post-war expansion of trade and that nationalized many sectors of its economy.[33] India's share of global trade fell from 1.3% in 1953 to 0.5% in 1983.[34] This model contributed to widespread inefficiencies and corruption, and it was poorly implemented.[35]
After a fiscal crisis in 1991, India has increasingly adopted free-market principles and liberalised its economy to international trade. These reforms were started by former Finance minister Manmohan Singh under the guidance of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. They eliminated much of Licence Raj, a pre- and post-British era mechanism of strict government controls on setting up new industry. Following these economic reforms, and a strong focus on developing national infrastructure such as the Golden Quadrilateral project by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the country's economic growth progressed at a rapid pace, with relatively large increases in per-capita incomes.[36] The south western state of Maharashtra contributes the highest towards India's GDP among all states, while Bihar is among its poorest states in terms of GNI per capita. Mumbai, Maharashtra is known as the trade and financial capital of India.
The combination of protectionist, import-substitution, Fabian socialism, social democratic-inspired policies governed India for sometime after the end of British occupation. The economy was then characterised by extensive regulation, protectionism, public ownership of large monopolies, pervasive corruption and slow growth.[38][39] Since 1991, continuing economic liberalisation has moved the country towards a market-based economy.[38][39] By 2008, India had established itself as one of the world's faster-growing economies. Growth significantly slowed to 6.8% in 2008–09, but subsequently recovered to 7.4% in 2009–10, while the fiscal deficit rose from 5.9% to a high 6.5% during the same period.[40] India's current account deficit surged to 4.1% of GDP during Q2 FY11 against 3.2% the previous quarter. The unemployment rate for 2012–13, according to Government of India's Labour Bureau, was 4.7% nationwide, by UPS method;[12] and 3% by NSSO method.[13] India's consumer price inflation has ranged between 8.9 to 12% over the 2009-2013 period.

Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao (28 June 1921 – 23 December 2004) was an Indian lawyer and politician who served as the tenth Prime Minister of India (1991–1996). His ascendancy to the prime ministership was politically significant in that he was the first holder of this office from non-Hindi-speaking south India. He led an important administration, overseeing a major economic transformation and several home incidents affecting national security of India. Rao who held the Industries portfolio was personally responsible for the dismantling of the Licence Raj as this came under the purview of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He is often referred to as the "Father of Indian Economic Reforms". Future prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh continued the economic reform policies pioneered by Rao's government. Rao accelerated the dismantling of the License Raj, reversing the socialist policies of Rajiv Gandhi's government. He employed Dr. Manmohan Singh as his Finance Minister to embark on historic economic transition. With Rao's mandate, Dr. Manmohan Singh launched India's globalisation angle of the reforms that implemented the International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies to rescue the almost bankrupt nation from economic collapse. Rao was also referred to as Chanakya for his ability to steer tough economic and political legislation through the parliament at a time when he headed a minority government.
According to Natwar Singh, "Unlike Nehru his knowledge of Sanskrit was profound. Nehru had a temper, PV a temperament. His roots were deep in the spiritual and religious soil of India. He did not need to Discover India". 11th President of India APJ Abdul Kalam described Rao as "patriotic statesman who believed that the nation is bigger than the political system". Kalam acknowledged that Rao in fact asked him to get ready for nuclear tests in 1996 but it was not carried out as government at center got changed due to 1996 general election and it was later carried out by Vajpayee led NDA government. In fact Rao briefed Vajpayee on nuclear plans.

Full Video of Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs Interaction with the Media.
Q. Ajay Kaul: After assembly election, much churning is going on
within Congress. Will there be a change of guard?
PM: Congress president has already answered that question. We will
announce a Prime Ministerial candidate at the appropriate time.
Q. Pankaj Pandey: Congrats on 2 terms. There have been repeated
allegations of corruption in UPA 1 and 2
PM: as far as charges of corruption are concerned, most of them are
concerned with the period of UPA 1 . Coal block allocation as well as
2G spectrum allocation were during UPA 1. We went to the electorate
with our performance and people of India gave us a mandate for another
term. These allegations were raised by the media, sometime by the CAG.
We must remember that these did not pertain to UPA 1
Q. Rajeev Deshpande: Allegations of corruption.
PM: Well I feel somewhat sad because I was the one who insisted that
spectrum allocations should be transparent, fair and equitable. I was
the one who insisted that coal blocks be allocated through auctions.
This has been forgotten. Opposition has vested interests. Media plays
these things up. When the the history of this period is written, we
will come out unscathed. I do not say there were no irregularities.
But these were exaggerated by the media, by the CAG.
Q. Pallavi Ghosh: You rule yourself for third term, Will Rahul Gandhi
be the PM candidate?
PM: Well, I have indicated in my opening remarks that I am not going
to be a candidate for Prime Ministership if UPA comes to power. Rahul
Gandhi has outstanding credentials to be nominated as the presidential
(prime ministerial) candidate.
Q. Zee News: contest between Modi and Rahul Gandhi?
PM: I have full confidence that the next prime minister will be from
the UPA coalition. Without discussing the merits of Narendra Modi, i
feel it will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as
the prime minister.
Q. Maneesh Chibber: BJP and Modi's charge is that you have been a weak PM, d
PM: Well I do not believe I have been a weak PM. the bjp and its
associates might say whatever they like but if by strong leadership
they mean you preside over the mass massacre on the streets of
Ahmedabad, I do not belive that this is strong leadership.
Q. You gave yourselve 7/10 in 2005, how would you rate yourself on a
scale of 10?
PM: it is for you people to check me. I feel we have done reasonably
well. The growth has been taken forward despite international crisis,
eurozone crisis, what has happened in Brazil, South Africa. I dont
think our experience can be called not successful.
Q. Saba Naqvi: Arvind Kejriwal
PM: Well people of India have reposed confidence in AAP party in
Delhi. Time will tell if this experience is capable of delivering. It
is only one week. Let us give them time
Q: Venkat: Sri Lankan Tamil issue, TN Fishermen
PM: Well it is not true that we are not concerned about the well-being
of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. We have urged the SL government
to address genuine aspirations of the people of Sri Lanka...There is
now an opportunity of government of Tamil Sri Lanka and government of
TN can work out an arrangment for fishermen.
Q. Liz Mathew: best and lowest moment
PM: I will need time to reflect on this. Best moment was when we werew
able to strike nuclear deal with US, which ended our nuclear apartheid
and use nuclear power for the country's progress.
Q. Aam Aadmi, Kejriwal?
PM: Corruption is an issue and certainly AAP has been able to make a
success of their emphasis on corruption. Time will tell how well they
do.
Dealing with corruption is not an easy issue. We must grapple with the
task of dealing with corruption. This is not a task that one party can
accomplish. Various parties have to come together to tackle this
monster.
Q. Kerala: Kasthurirangan report, LPG prices
PM: Well as far as the Kasturirangan report is concerned, it is still
in the phase fo being discussed with state governments. As far as
increasing the cylinders, no decision has been taken.
Q. Sanjay Mishra Amar Ujala: Sikh riots
PM: Well if you are talking about the Sikhs who suffered in the 1984
riots, our government has done a lot. I used the opportunity of a
discussion in Parliament, to apologise for what had happened. We
provided compensation, even though no compensation is enough for such
loss and suffering.
Q: Industry criticism
PM: There were domestic factors. but more important was the role of
international factors. First global slowdown of 2008-09, then the
Eurozone crisis.
Q. Growth momentum. price rise.
PM: We will certainly make every effort. Our vice-president Rahul
Gandhi convened a meeting of CMs of Congress states to discuss means
to check price rise
Q. Will Modi's dream of a Congress-Mukt Bharat be fulfilled?
PM: I sincerely believe that what Mr Narendra Modi is saying is not
going to materialise.

In 1991 when India was on the brink of an economic collapse, the then Prime Minister of India, the shrewd polyglot P V Narasimha Rao, pulled off a masterstroke when he appointed Manmohan Singh, an Oxford educated economist who had served in various roles in the government as a bureaucrat as the Finance Minister. Taking a radical turn from Nehru's socialistic economic model, Manmohan Singh opened up the Indian markets with reforms that heralded the rebirth of the nation. In 2004, when Sonia Gandhi, much to everyone's surprise, decided not to occupy the PM's chair, she decided to appoint Manmohan to the top post. And thus began the UPA era. While the plan to have Sonia Gandhi handle the tribulations of coalition politics, it was decided that Manmohan would handle the administration. The dual centre model of power was fraught with peril and while UPA-I did see India touching unprecedented growth rates, UPA-II woul see Indian economy hitting the doldrums apart from being hit by a series of scams, unprecedented in both their scale and complicity of the government. Manmohan leaves behind a mixed legacy. While his crtics will continue to maintain that he was a rubber stamp Prime Minister, his supporters, though few in number, will credit him for his hard stance on the Indo-US nuclear deal. After heading the country for ten years, Manmohan Singh gets set to retire from politics and it is time to wish the Prime Minister goodbye.

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Nalin Kohli, Natl Spokesperson, BJP & Advocate; M R Venkatesh, CA & Policy Analyst; Prof R Vaidyanathan, Professor, IIM Bangalore; Jaiveer Shergill, Advocate, SC & Media Panelist, Congress; Rahul Narvekar, Spokesperson & MLC, NCP; and Gaurav Bhatia, Spokesperson & National Head, Legal Cell, SP -- discuss the issue of former PM Manmohan Singh calling corruption during UPA Govt a non-issue. And, being in denial over UPA scams, is the former PM down with #Scamnesia?
Under attack over allegations in 2G scam, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asserted that he had "never used" public office to "enrich" himself, his family or friends. "As far as I am concerned, I can say in all humility that I have not used my public office to enrich myself, to enrich my family or to enrich my friends. "And still the BJP government keeps on harping on this theme of corruption just because it wants to distract the attention of the people to non-issues," he said in an uncharacteristic hard-hitting speech at a convention organised by Congress' student wing NSUI in New Delhi. Singh's statement came in the backdrop of former TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal's allegations that Singh had warned him of harm if he did not cooperate on 2G telecom licenses. Baijal, who was probed for several years in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, also claimed that the CBI wanted him to "implicate" Arun Shourie and Ratan Tata in the case. Latching onto the issue, BJP Ministers had called the Singh-led UPA government a "coalition in corruption".

As preparations for the war begin, Maharaja Daljeet realizes the need to get the map of the enemy's fortress which houses an infamous trap where troops have always floundered. He even loses an important man of his army, who is caught while spying. Maharaja Daljeet then invites brave men of the kingdom to get the trap's map. This task is undertaken by Raja and her friend Juhi (Kammo) who took the disguise of men. The two girls get the map of the enemy fortress through a lot of hard work. However she finds herself unable to do so and realizes that she has fallen in love with Kumar. Kumar too falls in love with her despite not knowing her name and reality.
