The documentary begins with a laborer digging in the earth. He is digging what will become his sacrificial grave. Dramatically, his head is chopped off and the theme music begins for the series. A bit sensationalistic at first, we get into the archaeology of why this scene was reconstructed this way. The Shang Dynasty, once considered legend, is now archaeological fact. Dating back to nearly 3000 BC, the Shang were a powerful group of early rulers. The evidence of oracle bones, on which the earliest form of Chinese writing were written. The city of Anyang, some 300 miles from Beijing, is the site where oracle bones were first discovered in 1928. So, the Shang were not legendary or mythical after all, but a dynasty in fact. Headless skeletons were discovered, suggesting human sacrifice. Some of these sites date to 1300-1500 BC and form an essential, and repeated patter in this Bronze Age culture. Bronze vessels that were extremely intricate for these mandate of heaven rulers. Bronze casting was perfected as an art during the Shang, and many have been found. We learn about Wu Di, and his queen, who led his armies in war. She was his general, who gave great victories. Her name was Fu Hao. At Xanshingdui, there was a rival culture that vied with the Shang. Indeed, over the next eight centuries, there were numerous cultures that jockeyed for power and position in early China. The Zhou were the next dynasty, and centered at Xi'an. The following were the Warring States Period. Next, we move to the disunited period in China's history. There were many rival kingdoms that make up what is now China. It was not until Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di came along and united China, in 221 BC. It was Qin for whom China is named. He also started construction on the Great Wall of China at this time, to protect China from barbarian invasions. He has become famous for the Terra Cotta Warriors that were discovered in the 1970s. Some 10,000 life sized warriors made of clay, each individualized and carrying weapons were buried intentionally near his pyramid mound tomb at Xi'an, in Shanxi Province, to protect the king after death in a ritualized way. Following Qin we have many succeeding dynasties, such as the Han, who were contemporaries with Rome, the T'ang, an imperial dynasty unmatched in imperial and geographical greatness, the Song, who were noted for their magnificent literary and poetic achievements, the Yuan Dynasty from the Mongols who conquered China, founded by Genghis Khan and completed by Kublai Khan. The Ming followed this and then the Q'ing, or Manchu Dynasty. China has had a magnificent history, and it is culturally rich and sophisticated. This documentary gives some great information that is accurate, and includes some of the latest archaeological discoveries that have come out of China, from the Shang to Emperor Qin. I have been to Xi'an, and was extremely priveledged to see the Terra Cotta Warriors, and to climb to the top of Emperor Qin's earthen pyramid tomb.

The Xia Empire (Chinese: 夏朝; pinyin: Xià Cháo; Wade–Giles: Hsia-Ch'ao; IPA: [ɕiâ tʂʰɑ̌ʊ̯]; c. 2200 – c. 1600 BC) is the first dynasty in China to be described in ancient historical records such as Bamboo Chronicles. Classic of History and Records of the Grand Historian. The dynasty was established by the legendary Yu the Great[1] after Shun, the last of the Five Emperors, gave his throne to him. The Xia was later succeeded by the Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BC).
According to the traditional chronology based upon calculations by Liu Xin, the Xia ruled between 2205 and 1766 BC; according to the chronology based upon the Bamboo Annals, it ruled between 1989 and 1558 BC. The Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology Project concluded that the Xia existed between 2070 and 1600 BC. The tradition of tracing Chinese political history from heroic early emperors to the Xia to succeeding dynasties comes from the idea of the Mandate of Heaven, in which only one legitimate dynasty can exist at any given time, and was promoted by the Confucian school in the Eastern Zhou period, later becoming the basic position of imperial historiography and ideology. Although the Xia is an important element in early Chinese history, reliable information on the history of China before 13th century BC can only come from archaeological evidence since China's first established written system on a durable medium, the oracle bone script, did not exist until then.
Thus, the concrete existence of the Xia is yet to be proven, despite efforts by Chinese archaeologists to link the Xia with Bronze Age Erlitou archaeological sites.

Quite a bit of Chinese culture, writing and rationality further created amid the Zhou administration (1046–256 BC). The Zhou tradition started to bow to outer and inward weights in the eighth century BC, and the kingdom in the end broke separated into littler states, starting in the Spring and Autumn period and coming to full expression in the Warring States period. This is one of various times of fizzled statehood in Chinese history, the latest being the Chinese Civil War that began in 192

So besides of having an arsenal of swords, spears, sabres, crossbows and bow and arrows, the Chinese military could also choose from cannons, rockets, mines and even handheld firearms. Still, close combat would remain the favoured means of battle for a long time. All about the history of Chinas weaponry now on IT'S HISTORY!

According to these chronicles, they had been emissaries sent by the powers in Rome in order to establish relations with the Han Empire. Were they ambassadors or just ordinary merchants ? Maybe they were both...
At the times of Augustus, Rome's first emperor, the empire had been enjoying two prosperous centuries. It was the era of the Pax Romana and Rome's power was to expand rapidly due to contacts and trade. Endless caravans supplied a steady stream of goods from the Orient to the ports of the Mediterranean. Each trip represented a perilous voyage of 11 000 km with dangers lurking along the trade routes, not least of them being the Huns who turned travelling into a dangerous and uncertain enterprise.
Setting out from Antioch (Antakya), the merchants sent their goods to Asia via the terrestrial trade routes to Lo Yang, the capital of China. Along the road, intermediaries forced themselves upon the Roman and Chinese traders: the Parths, an Iranian tribe which occupied Persia. Their hold on the caravan routes was to become so powerful that the Romans looked for alternatives: it would be the maritime route.
During the reign of Augustus, some 120 ships crossed the Indian Ocean. On behalf of the Romans, Tamil sailors expanded their maritime routes towards the golden land, in other words Indochina, then crossed the Malacca straits to reach China. The Romans had established trading posts all along the coast of Indochina and put Tamil or Indian agents in charge of them. AMAZING DOCUMENTARY!

The United States on Thursday returned a dinosaur fossil believed to be about 120 million years old to China, along with a number of ancient cultural artifacts.
At a handover ceremony held at the Chinese embassy in Washington D.C., U.S. officials returned the fossil and 22 artifacts -- including jade disks, bronze trays and other items dating as far as 1600 BC - to Chinese government representatives.
"All the 22 returned cultural artifacts have been authenticated as relics dating back to the Tang dynasty or older eras, and are highly valued for their historical and archaeological significance," Gu Yucai, deputy director-general of China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage, said at the ceremony.
The items were recovered in Cleveland, Miami and New York by investigators of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to a press release.
Since the signing of a bilateral agreement in 2009, China and the U.S. have worked closely to prevent the illicit trafficking of archeological objects. And during President Xi Jinping's state visit to the U.S. in September, Washington agreed on returning forfeited Chinese artifacts.
"There is a great deal of interest in President Xi's visit here in the United States, and a great deal of interest as a result in China. So all the more reason that we want to ensure that our ties between our two countries are strengthened in a great way to do that is to make sure that we are respecting China's culture and heritage in history," Evan Ryan, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, told China Central Television (CCTV) in an exclusive interview.
"And we are doing that today by returning these items that are our law enforcement had tracked down here in the U.S.," she added.
Chinese ambassador Cui Tiankai said it has highlighted the two world big powers' commitment to enhancing cooperation on preserving cultural heritage.
"Their return to China is a great example of our law enforcement cooperation in countering illicit trafficking of archeological objects, and of our strengthened cultural exchange. And I believe coordinated actions like this could effectively put a brake on trafficking of archeological objects between China and the U.S., as well as encourage public interest in and support for bilateral cultural exchanges," said Cui.
The trove of artifacts is expected to arrive in Beijing on Saturday and then go on display at national museums. And the dinosaur fossil will be briefly exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh before returning to Beijing.
Two U.S. citizens have been convicted and fined after pleading guilty to schemes of illegally importing the Chinese fossil and treasures, according to ICE.

Chinese Warfare - Ancient Discoveries
Before the warring states of China were united, each state had its own territory and own military for defence. Following the unification of the states, a much more organised army was established. Although the states were united, emperors still wanted to claim more territory and an army was needed to conquer neighbouring peoples and claim their land. For many centuries, China was under threat of attack from Mongol tribes to the north and much of its military was involved with defending Chinese lands.
During the Han dynasty, China was frequently at war. It was also under frequent threat from enemies to the north. China's army was made up mainly of citizens who served in the army for a period of two years at some time in their lives. During times of peace, the army was deployed to conquer peoples and bring more land under Chinese rule.
If the army was on a specific military mission, an experienced officer was appointed. For minor operations, however, a junior officer was appointed to lead it. During the Han period, the army was mostly infantry. An advance party of archers and horsemen was often sent ahead of the infantry and the infantry were armed with spears and crossbows.
There is no evidence to suggest that ancient Chinese soldiers fought in a particular formation.

Building on his extensive research into the sacred symbols and creation myths of the Dogon of Africa and those of ancient Egypt, India, and Tibet, Laird Scranton investigates the myths, symbols, and traditions of prehistoric China, providing further evidence that the cosmology of all ancient cultures arose from a single now-lost source.
Scranton explores the fundamental similarities between the language that defined ancient Chinese cosmology and that of other creation traditions, revealing the connections between the phonetic structure of the words, their glyphs, and their use. He demonstrates striking parallels between the earliest systems of writing in China and the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt.
Reveals Gobekli Tepe as a center of civilizing knowledge for the ancient world
• Details how symbolic elements at Gobekli Tepe link a pre-Vedic cult in India to cosmological myths and traditions in Africa, Egypt, Tibet, and China
• Discusses how carved animal images at Gobekli Tepe relate to stages of creation and provide an archaic foundation for symbolic written language
