This video contains a description of the monumental buildings in the Acropolis. Especially it has very interesting analysis of the proportions and optical refinements of The Parthenon. This monumental work is a peripteral octostyle Doric temple on the Athenian Acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Its construction began in 447 and was completed in 438 BC although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, considered the zenith of the Doric order. The construction of The Parthenon, made almost entirely of white marble from Mount Penteli, was initiated by Pericles in thanks to the gods for his victory against the Persians. The architects in charge of the work were Ictino and Calicrates and were, in most cases, under the direction of the architect and great Athenian sculptor Phidias, author of the sculptural decoration and the great statue of Athena Parthenos which was located as the centerpiece of the temple (measuring forty feet high and for its elaboration 1,200 kg of gold were needed).

The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and western civilization,[3] and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. Mount Lycabettus is a Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens, Greece. At 300 meters (908 feet) above sea level. Pine trees cover its base, and at its two peaks are the 19th century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant. The hill is a popular tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki (The railway station can be found at Aristippou street). Lycabettus appears in various legends. Popular stories suggest it was once the refuge of wolves, (lycos in Greek), which is possibly the origin of its name (means "the one [the hill] that is walked by wolves"). Mythologically, Lycabettus is credited to Athena, who created it when she dropped a mountain she had been carrying from Pallene for the construction of the Acropolis after the box holding Erichthonius was opened. Im Laufe der Geschichte wurde er von Erdbeben erschüttert, angezündet und mehrfach umgebaut. Heute stellt sich die Frage, wie es den Griechen der Antike möglich war, dieses architektonische Meisterwerk ohne moderne technische Hilfsmittel zu errichten. Der Parthenon gilt seit fast 2.500 Jahren als Inbegriff der Schönheit und Perfektion. Er wurde auf der Athener Akropolis zu Ehren der Stadtgöttin Pallas Athene als Dank für die Rettung Athens vor den Persern errichtet. Im Laufe seiner Geschichte wurde das Gebäude beschossen, in Flammen gesetzt, von Erdbeben erschüttert, seiner Skulpturen beraubt und durch katastrophale Renovierungen entstellt. Ein Team von Architekten und Restauratoren wird dieses einmalige Bauwerk retten. Doch dazu muss es zunächst einige Rätsel lösen. Wie gelang es den alten Griechen, innerhalb von weniger als neun Jahren ein Bauwerk derartigen Ausmaßes mit millimetergenauer Präzision zu errichten? Welche Techniken und Werkzeuge setzten sie ein? Die Suche nach Antworten auf diese Fragen führt an die Wiege der europäischen Kultur und in die Entstehungszeit von Mathematik, Philosophie, Tragödie und Demokratie.

When Paul arrived in 51 CE, Athens was a small city, about 20,000, far smaller than Corinth at 100,000, and well past its prime But during the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BCE during the rule of Pericles (b.495, d.429) Athens was the center of literature and art, philosophy and rhetoric, science and architecture in the ancient world. Pericles was the most famous of Greek orators, statesmen and generals of Greece. If anyone could be seen as the embodiment of the Golden Age, it would be him. Thucydides, the father of history, claimed that he was “the first citizen of Athens”. Pericles was keen enough to predict that “Future ages will wonder at us as the present age wonders at us now”. He was a striking man, taller than most, handsome with intelligent, deep thinking eyes. Exceptionally educated, a lover of the arts. literature and philosophy. He was a man of courageous acts both on the battlefield and as a statesman. He loved as fiercely as he fought, keeping his beloved courtesan or “hetaira” Aspasia close to him at all times. Pericles transformed Athens into an imperial city after the Persian War victories as a commemoration to the spirit and bravery of the Greeks. The Parthenon, dedicated to the Goddess Athena, would be an eternal monument of the Greek spirit and the Greek ideal crowning his beloved city. The Parthenon and the adjoining buildings, most important of which are the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike, were built on the tip of the Acropolis, partly on bedrock and partly on a bedding of stone so that the foundations of the buildings would be flexible during an earthquake. Construction of the Parthenon was under the general supervision of the artist Pheidias and began in 447 B.C and finished a phenomenal nine years later in 438 B.C. The architects, Ictinos and Callicratis, were masters of visual illusion for they engineered gentle curves throughout much of its design. There is hardly a straight line to be found in the temple! Equally ingenious as well as a miraculous feat in itself was the transport of all the marble from Mount Penteli, a distance of over 20 kilometers from the sacred rock of the Acropolis. They used a mastery of ropes, pulleys and wooden cranes to transport and hoist the massive stones in place. The best stonemasons in the land were used to chisel and shape the marble to absolute perfection. According to architect Manolis Korres, direction of the Acropolis Restoration Project, the stonemasons who cut and honed the marble of the Parthenon were as responsible for the immortal temple as the politicians, architects and sculptors. The mystery here is how. How did the Athenians bring this colossal project to fruition apparently without an overall building plan and with the tools and resources of the time? How did they achieve such faultless proportions and balance? How did they conceive of and implicate such subtle visual elements? How did the workers work with such precision, sometimes accurate to within a fraction of a millimeter without the help of modern technology? Those questions still, after 2500 years, remain unanswered. That is the Glory of the Golden Age of Greece, the brightest and most fertile age human history has ever known.

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as "The Acropolis" without qualification. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495 – 429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the site's most important buildings including the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians in the Morean War when the Parthenon was being used for gunpowder storage and was hit by a cannonball.[ (wikipedia)

Legend has it that during a contest between the gods Poseidon left the imprint of his trident on a rock upon which Athene created an olive tree. Throughout its history the temple served many purposes and the Turks, somewhat disrespectfully, transformed the Erechtheion into a harem. The evening sun descends slowly across the ruins of Ancient Greece. The marble of the temple shines golden as though to thank the gods for creating this remarkable city. A city in which both antiquity and the present unite: a symbol of the Occident.

Garmisch was a small alpine dwelling inhabited by shepherds but the neighboring, Partenkirchen already existed in Roman times and was called Parthenon. The residents of the two villages probably didn't like each other much. They even built their churches with their backs to each other lest they should meet by chance. All this changed in 1935 when the two villages were united in order to have better chances at the tender to organize the winter Olympics. This is when they built their ice skating stadium that was once the biggest in Europe. The three run ski jump stadium at the foot of the -- and the bobsled track surrounded by mountain lakes. The city is still developing and it's become one of the most well known vacation and ski resorts of Germany. However, it's not only a paradise for winter sports. One of Europe's biggest swimming complexes and the first wellness center Auschwitz was built in the 1970s. It has a water surface of 2000 square meters, a wave pool and an open beach. In summer, people can also swim in Riessersee, -- and Eibsee. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a real holiday resort with a well kept holiday park, theater, confectioneries and restaurants. Richard Strauss bought a villa here from the royalties who received for his opera Salome and lived here until his death. We can find villas similar to Strauss' in both parts of the city mixing with farm houses built in alpine style. There are some Franconia and Swabian, wooden beam structured houses called Fachberg houses but there are more Bavarian ones. The latter are shorter, stubbier. Earlier these frescoes also called luftmalerei used to portray religious scenes but today, they'd rather tell the story of the house itself or the family who owns the house. On the walls of hotels and shops, they're a form of advertisement. The wall of Garmisch's oldest in inn, the Huszar is decorated with the picture of a dragon looking out the window. The well kept gardens are full of flowers of an incredibly wide variety and naturally geraniums adorn all windowsills and railings. The new joint city hall was built in 1935 before the winter Olympics. The most remarkable event in the city surroundings is the passion play in Oberammergau. The inhabitants of the small mountain village have been performing the story of the passion of Christ every 10 years for 380 years now. Their ancestors took a vow to do this at the time of the great plague. The passion is performed for six month from morning until evening and is now a widely known event that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators. A real technical relic, one of the old locomotives of the Zugspitzbahn is exhibited in front of the --house. New motor engines have taken its place in transportation which may not be prettier but are certainly more modern. Every winter, skiers, snow boarders and extreme sports lovers invade the mountains around Garmisch. The lower station of the Zugspitzbahn is near the stadium. There're several ways to go up the mountain including the cograils, cable cars, funiculars and ski lifts. But we can only get near the 2966m high summit with the Zugspitzbahn. Experienced hikers and mountain climbers can also reach the summit on foot in nine hours. The first person to reach the Zugspitz in this way was a Bavarian soldier in 1920. The tracks wind between the houses on the western part of Garmisch then make their way up the steep hillside. Through the pine forests, we can see spectacular mountain lakes sparkling. The last stretch of the journey takes us through a long tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel, we are greeted by a beautiful small lake and after a couple of minutes, we reach the top station. On the summing, we'll find a ski lift and a resthouse with two coats of arms on its railings to show where Bavaria ends and where the Austrian province Tyrol begins. From the huge terrace, we can see the surrounding mountains of Vank, --. There's a small chapel on the snow speckled summit where victims of the mountains are commemorated. The restaurant of the rest house offers tourists, mountaineers and skiers real Bavarian specialties and hot drinks. For our way down, we can also choose the cable car, the Seilbahn that takes us to the small lake of Eibsee instead of Garmisch. Eibsee is a crystal clear emerald colored mountain lake.
