Greece has been engaged in a long dispute over some of the worlds most famous sculptures. The sculptures were taken from the Parthenon almost 200 years ago and brought to Britain, and the Greeks argue they should be returned to Athens.

It is based on events in Belgium during the Second World War though shot entirely in and around Berlin.

What's all this nonsense about sending the Parthenon Marbles back to Greece? If Lord Elgin hadn't rescued them from the Parthenon in Athens and presented them to the British Museum almost 200 years ago, these exquisite sculptures -- the finest embodiment of the classical ideal of beauty and harmony -- would have been lost to the ravages of pollution and time. So we have every right to keep them: indeed, returning them would set a dangerous precedent, setting off a clamour for every Egyptian mummy and Grecian urn to be wrenched from the world's museums and sent back to its country of origin. It is great institutions like the British Museum that have established such artefacts as items of world significance: more people see the Marbles in the BM than visit Athens every year. Why send them back to relative obscurity?
But aren't such arguments a little too imperialistic? All this talk of visitor numbers and dangerous precedents -- doesn't it just sound like an excuse for Britain to hold on to dubiously acquired treasures that were removed without the consent of the Greek people to whom they culturally and historically belong? That's what Lord Byron thought, and now Stephen Fry is taking up the cause. We should return the Marbles as a gesture of solidarity with Greece in its financial distress, says Fry, and as a mark of respect for the cradle of democracy and the birthplace of rational thought.

The Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, are a collection of classical Greek marble sculptures inscriptions and architectural members that originally were part of the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis of Athens. The British had obtained a controversial permit from the Ottoman authorities to remove pieces from the Acropolis.
In the early 1800's Elgin's agents removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as architectural members and sculpture from the Propylaea. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain where the acquisition of the collection was supported by some, while other critics compared Elgin's actions to vandalism or looting.
Following a public debate in Parliament and subsequent exoneration of Elgin's actions, the marbles were purchased by the British government in 1816 and placed on display in the British Museum, where they stand today on view in the specially built Duveen Gallery. The debate continues as to whether the Marbles should remain in the British Museum or be returned to Athens.

Human rights attorney and wife of actor George Clooney, Amal Clooney, was in Athens on Wednesday, taking part in a Greek campaign to reclaim the fifth-century B.C. Elgin Marbles from Britain.
The Lebanese-born British lawyer, formally known as Amal Alamuddin, was mobbed by press on her arrival in the Greek capital, while on her way to a press conference on the reclamation of the Greek statues.
The sculptures in question where used as decorations for 2000 years at the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis. Human rights attorney and wife of actor George Clooney, Amal Clooney, was in Athens on Wednesday, taking part in a Greek campaign to reclaim the fifth-century B.C. Elgin Marbles from Britain.
The Lebanese-born British lawyer, formally known as Amal Alamuddin, was mobbed by press on her arrival in the Greek capital, while on her way to a press conference on the reclamation of the Greek statues.
The sculptures in question where used as decorations for 2000 years at the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis. Weighs heavily on me like unwilling sleep,
And each imagined pinnacle and steep
Of godlike hardship tells me I must die
Like a sick eagle looking at the sky.
Yet 'tis a gentle luxury to weep
That I have not the cloudy winds to keep
Fresh for the opening of the morning's eye.
Such dim-conceived glories of the brain
Bring round the heart an undescribable feud;
So do these wonders a most dizzy pain,
That mingles Grecian grandeur with the rude
Wasting of old time—with a billowy main—
A sun—a shadow of a magnitude.
Commentary:
John Keats, an English Romantic poet of the 18th century, visited the display of the Elgin Marbles depicting Greek figures that were once mounted on the Parthenon and the Acropolis of Athens. Being a very profound experience, Keats wrote a sonnet to express the humbling nature of his visit, exploring the doomed sense of mortality he felt.
Divided into an octet and a sestet and written in iambic pentameter, Keats begins the opening eight lines by exploring his place as a mortal man and how he wishes he did not have to acknowledge that insignificance though it is heavily entwined in his life. His entire existence, from the highest points to the lowest points, is just a fragment of larger context though permanently impacting on his life. And all his imagined success and pride is hardly anything in the breadth of overall existence. He continuously draws on celestial bodies with a reverent tone, indicating that he is simply a man understanding his place in the world. The great beauty of Grecian society and art lays crumbling before him, and he acknowledges that he will one day crumble as well as he suffered from the devastating disease, tuberculosis.
Beyond just the literal visual representation of the words in the poem, (the kite with the line about the wind and the eyes snapping open when talking about morning) I chose the angel Castiel from the series "Supernatural" to portray the purpose of Keats' message because his story is one of a fascination with humanity and a tragedy due to hubris. His very name foreshadows his fall from grace, "Cas" being the Latin root meaning "to fall" and "iel" being the Latin root meaning "from/of God". Mortality was a beautiful yet terrible thing and Cas spent much of his character arc attempting to discover his own humanity, only to realize that it was a terrifying and enormous. He lost his wings and had to walk with the common people.
My favorite line from this poem that made me realize Castiel was the perfect depiction of the imagery was, "Like a sick eagle looking at the sky." And eagle is a symbol of strength and magnificence, of pride and elegant ferocity. But the eagle is grounded and must look up, forced to realize that it is no more grand than its impending death and the heavens that will watch. And this is what Cas realized, falling and losing his wings.

British lawyer Amal Alamuddin Clooney, wife of actor George Clooney, arrived in Athens on Monday for a three-day visit to advise the government on its legal chances for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, from the British Museum in London.
Alamuddin Clooney on her arrival briefly met with the scores of journalists who'd gathered at the hotel in Athens.
