Profit Pollution and Deception BP and the Oil Spill FULL DOCUMENTARY HD
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The total discharge has been estimated at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3).
The blowout preventer that was intended to shut off the flow of high-pressure oil and gas from the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico during the disaster on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 20, 2010, failed to seal the well because drill pipe buckled for reasons the offshore drilling industry remains largely unaware of.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) is an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which flowed unabated for three months in 2010, and continues to seep. It is the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The spill stemmed from a sea-floor oil gusher that resulted from the 20 April 2010, explosion of Deepwater Horizon, which drilled on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. The explosion killed 11 men working on the platform and injured 17 others. On 15 July 2010, the gushing wellhead was capped, after it had released about 4.9 million barrels (780,000 m3) of crude oil. An estimated 53,000 barrels per day (8,400 m3/d) escaped from the well just before it was capped. It is believed that the daily flow rate diminished over time, starting at about 62,000 barrels per day (9,900 m3/d) and decreasing as the reservoir of hydrocarbons feeding the gusher was gradually depleted. On 19 September 2010, the relief well process was successfully completed, and the federal government declared the well "effectively dead". In August 2011, oil and oil sheen covering several square miles of water were reported surfacing not far from BP’s Macondo well. Scientific analysis confirmed the oil is a chemical match for Macondo 252. The Coast Guard said the oil was too dispersed to recover. In March 2012, a "persistent oil seep" near the Macondo 252 well was reported.

A explosão da plataforma Deepwater Horizon ocorreu no dia 20 de abril de 2010, no Golfo do México, nos Estados Unidos. O desastre consistiu na explosão da plataforma de petróleo semi-submersível Deepwater Horizon que pertence à Transocean e que estava sendo operada pela BP, afundando na quinta-feira seguinte à explosão, depois de ficar dois dias em chamas. Uma grande mancha de óleo espalhou-se e chegou à costa da Louisiana e a outros estados.
Houve 17 trabalhadores que ficaram feridos e 11 faleceram.
Explosão
A torre estava na fase final da perfuração de um poço, na qual se reforça com concreto o poço. Este é um processo delicado, pois há possibilidade de os fluidos do poço serem liberados descontroladamente.
No dia 20 de abril de 2010 houve uma explosão na torre, e esta se incendiou. Morreram 11 pessoas em consequência deste acidente, 14 outros foram encontrados com vida.
Sete trabalhadores foram evacuados para a estação aérea naval em New Orleans e levados para o hospital. Barcos de apoio lançaram água à torre numa infrutífera tentativa de extinguir as chamas.
A Deepwater Horizon afundou a 22 de abril de 2010, em águas de aproximadamente 1500 metros de profundidade, e os seus restos foram encontrados no leito marinho a aproximadamente 400 metros a noroeste do poço.
O derrame de petróleo resultante prejudicou o habitat de centenas de espécies de aves.
Controle do vazamento
A BP anunciou em 17 de julho de 2010 ter conseguido controlar temporariamente o derrame de petróleo, depois de instaladas novas válvulas que conseguiram travar o derrame.
Ainda sim, o vídeo denuncia as manobras da BP e da Transocean para disfarçarem os impactos ambientais ao invés de mitigá-los efetivamente e reduzir os prejuízos com as indenizações a serem arcadas pelo sinistro.

Reportagem documentário BP - O Desastre Continua no Golfo, produzida e transmitida pela PBS - Public Broadcasting Service (rede norte-americana de televisão de caráter educativo-cultural), aqui dublada e transmitida pela rede de TV portuguesa TVI24, sobre o desastre da Deepwater Horizon, com um blowout no poço da locação de Macondo, seguido de explosão e naufrágio da plataforma e o subsequente vazamento de aproximadamente 5 milhões de barris (ou 780 milhões de litros) de petróleo no Golfo do México, a maior catástrofe ecológica da indústria petrolífera, e sobre os impactos causados pelo incidente na economia e na vida das pessoas e no meio ambiente da região.
A explosão da plataforma Deepwater Horizon ocorreu no dia 20 de abril de 2010, no Golfo do México, nos Estados Unidos. O desastre consistiu na explosão da plataforma de petróleo semi-submersível Deepwater Horizon que pertence à Transocean e que estava sendo operada pela BP, afundando na quinta-feira seguinte à explosão, depois de ficar dois dias em chamas. Uma grande mancha de óleo espalhou-se e chegou à costa da Louisiana e a outros estados.
Houve 17 trabalhadores que ficaram feridos e 11 faleceram.
Explosão
A torre estava na fase final da perfuração de um poço, na qual se reforça com concreto o poço. Este é um processo delicado, pois há possibilidade de os fluidos do poço serem liberados descontroladamente.
No dia 20 de abril de 2010 houve uma explosão na torre, e esta se incendiou. Morreram 11 pessoas em consequência deste acidente, 14 outros foram encontrados com vida.
Sete trabalhadores foram evacuados para a estação aérea naval em New Orleans e levados para o hospital. Barcos de apoio lançaram água à torre numa infrutífera tentativa de extinguir as chamas.
A Deepwater Horizon afundou a 22 de abril de 2010, em águas de aproximadamente 1500 metros de profundidade, e os seus restos foram encontrados no leito marinho a aproximadamente 400 metros a noroeste do poço.
O derrame de petróleo resultante prejudicou o habitat de centenas de espécies de aves.
Controle do vazamento
A BP anunciou em 17 de julho de 2010 ter conseguido controlar temporariamente o derrame de petróleo, depois de instaladas novas válvulas que conseguiram travar o derrame.
Ainda sim, o vídeo denuncia as manobras da BP e da Transocean para disfarçarem os impactos ambientais ao invés de mitigá-los efetivamente e reduzir os prejuízos com as indenizações a serem arcadas pelo sinistro.

Putting aside criminal cases, the stakes for all sides are perhaps never higher than in a class action case – mere certification of a class can increase the pressure to settle exponentially. But, of course, the class must be properly composed in order to be certified. In the recently-decided Wal-Mart v. Dukes case, the U.S. Supreme Court revisited some of the basic requirements for certification of a class of plaintiffs, including commonality. Other requirements of Rule 23 certification may surface in ongoing litigation stemming from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, where defense attorneys are arguing, among other things, that the settlement agreement is being administered and interpreted overly broadly to include numerous class members who have not suffered any injury caused by BP. Our experts will discuss recent developments in class action litigation, including a pending petition for cert in the BP case. The Federalist Society presented this panel on September 4, 2014.

Five years ago oil leaked from an underwater well and into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. The well was operated by the energy company BP. The oil spill polluted major fishing areas, estuaries and beaches along the Gulf coast of the southeastern United States. BP was judged responsible, and recently agreed to pay $18.7 billion to coastal states. That money can help pay for environmental and economic restoration efforts. Traditionally, about 70 percent of the shrimp Americans eat comes from the area. Large parts of the gulf were closed to fishing after the oil spill. Coastal fishing areas are now open. But the owner of Blanchard Seafood says many of his former buyers never came back. Dean Blanchard says his business is probably losing $20 million a year in sales. He is still angry at BP. He says the oil companies in the gulf only think about profits and not the environment. Port Fourchon has one of the largest oil and gas operation centers in the United States. It is near Dean Blanchard’s business on Grande Isle. Kyle Graham heads Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. He says the state’s share of the BP settlement money will permit Louisiana to fix some problems. Visitors are returning, but there still are many effects from the BP oil spill. Studies have found oil and other chemicals on the sea floor of the Gulf and in the shells and bodies of different kinds of water animals. Kyle Graham says a full recovery will require more work.

The state and federal governments have decided not to pursue $92 million in additional damages from Exxon Mobil Corp., citing the recovery of ducks and sea otters in Alaska's Prince William Sound following a devastating oil spill more than two decades ago.
In a court filing made on Wednesday, government attorneys said patches of lingering oil that remain can no longer be considered an impediment to the recovery of sea otters or harlequin ducks or a significant ongoing threat to their now-restored populations in the area affected by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.
The filing came ahead of a scheduled status hearing in federal court in Anchorage on Thursday.
Lawsuits brought against Exxon by the governments after the spill led to a $900 million settlement and a consent decree that resolved claims related to natural-resource damages. The decree included a so-called "reopener" clause that allowed for the governments to seek additional funds for restoration projects.
In 2006, near the end of the period in which the clause could be invoked, the governments demanded $92 million from Exxon based on the preliminary cost of implementing a plan to address lingering oil. But they never asked a judge to enforce the claim.
Ultimately, money from the original settlement was used for studies on lingering oil and measures to make it non-toxic, the state Department of Law said.

EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin features a special episode dedicated to the continuing impacts of the 2010 BP oil spill, starting with the news that the oil company was found grossly negligent this week and may have to pay quadruple the amount of money in penalties to the government. BTS producer, Cody Snell, then goes down to the Gulf to investigate the case of Jorey Danos, a BP oil spill cleanup worker who has been sick for the last five years due to his exposure to a toxic chemical oil dispersant known as Corexit. Abby then speaks with Wilma Subra, an award winning toxicologist, about the science behind the dispersant and why the EPA approved spraying nearly 2 million gallons of the substance on the water. Abby then goes over the impact on the Gulf ecosystem and wildlife, highlighting the millions of fish, birds, and mammals that have died as a result of the spill. BTS wraps up the show with an interview with Clint Guidry, President of the Louisiana Shrimpers Association about the impact of the spill on the seafood industry and the continuing battle to receive claims from the company.
