The Cowsills is an American singing group from Newport, Rhode Island. They specialized in harmonies and the ability to sing and play music at an early age. The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill; they shortly thereafter added their brother John. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and Barry was on drums. When John learned how to play drums and joined the band, Barry went to bass. After their initial success, the brothers were joined by their siblings Susan and Paul and their mother Barbara. Bob's twin brother Richard was the road manager. When the group expanded to its full family membership by 1967, the six siblings ranged in age from 8 to 19. Joined by their mother, Barbara Cowsill (née Russell), the group was the inspiration for the 1970s television show The Partridge Family.
The Cowsills' musical interest started while their father Bud Cowsill was stationed in Canton, Ohio, in the late 1950s as a US Navy recruiter. Billy and Bob taught themselves how to play the guitar. The boys developed their musical talent and harmonized vocals, and they performed at school church dances in Stark County, Ohio. The boys' first television appearance was on the Gene Carroll Show on WEWS in Cleveland.
The Park may refer to:
The Rain were the Manchester band that eventually evolved into Oasis. The band formed in Manchester, England in 1991, taking their name from The Beatles' B-side, "Rain". Founding members were Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass), Chris Hutton (vocals). Drummer Tony McCarroll joined shortly after the band formed to replace their drum machine and Hutton was replaced as vocalist by Liam Gallagher, who became the band's songwriter, in partnership with Arthurs. In this partnership, they wrote several songs including "Take Me" and "Life in Vain". The band rehearsed only one day a week and did not perform at shows often.
Shortly after Liam joined, the band was renamed Oasis, at his suggestion. Various explanations of the origins of the name have been offered, however, it came about when Liam’s older brother Noel roadied for the Inspiral Carpets at a venue in Swindon called the Oasis Leisure Centre. Liam reportedly liked the name's "resonance of imagery."
One day in August 1991, Noel, having recently returned from the Inspiral Carpets' tour of the U.S., went to watch his brother's band perform at the Manchester Boardwalk, supporting a band called Sweet Jesus. Noel offered to join, reportedly on condition that he would be the lead guitarist and they would perform only his songs. Noel made an instant impact on the band, he began to introduce new sounds and ways of creating music. After a few small warm up gigs in towns such as Middlesbrough, the band decided to produce Definitely Maybe, under the name of Oasis.
"The Rain, the Park & Other Things" is a psychedelic pop song with music and lyrics co-written by Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff. The song was recorded by the pop band The Cowsills, and included on their 1967 album The Cowsills (MGM E/SE-4498). Released as a single, the song reached #2 on the Billboard charts. The single cemented the group's international popularity and sold some three million copies over the years. It ties with 1969's "Hair" as the group's biggest hit, as both reached No. 2 in the U.S. It reached No. 1 in Canada's RPM Magazine charts.
The song is unusual being one of the few vocal works whose lyrics do not contain the song's title. It is known by many as "The Flower Girl".
The sound of a rain storm is heard in the introduction as well as in the portions between the Chorus and the verses. In the song, a young man sees a flower girl sitting in the rain, in the park and, where they take a walk together, hand in hand, feeling happy, until when the sun breaks through, the flower girl disappears, however, the young man is still happy because of his love for the flower girl. The young man asks the question: "Was she reality, or just a dream to me?"
the interesting thing on this vid is that in the original live audio was marred with technical diffiulties,so bad that vocals were not heard for the 1st 45 seconds, only music. Also looks like someone else cropped the original color video. The other weird thing, inthe b & w vid, there is no mom or girls in the video, yet we heard their vocals.

Co-written by Artie Kornfield and Steve Duboff and recorded for their eponymous first album, "The Cowsills", "The Rain, The Park & Other Things" was the breakthrough hit for the family group, The Cowsills. At the time the album was recorded, the group consisted of brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry; John and their mother, Barbara. Siblings, Paul & Susan joined soon afterwards. One of the finer examples of "sunshine pop" from the sixties, "The Rain, The Park & Other Things" reached the #2 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 in the fall of 1967, was on the charts for sixteen weeks, and became a gold record for The Cowsills. The version heard here in the Brooks Arthur mixed 45 RPM mono release.

On October 7, 2016, The Cowsills presented a free concert at the Riverside Casino in Riverside, Iowa. The combination of talent and energy wowed the standing-room-only audience. The Cowsills continue to demonstrate the harmony and articulate voice-blending that their fans have become accustomed to. After the concert, the Cowsills held a “Meet and Greet” where audience members had the opportunity to speak with the friendly, fun group person to person. It was an honor to be able to watch the live performance here in Iowa.
I think we all know that The Cowsills were the inspiration for The Partridge Family.... I present, in my opinion, the best Cowsills' album ever produced... "We Can Fly". Enjoy! Like a lot of bands from the 1960s, The Cowsills soon disappeared from view -- 1910 Fruitgum Company, anyone? -- and I didn't give them much thought until last week when I was invited to watch a new documentary film by Louise Palanker, Family Band: The Cowsills Story, about the real family behind the singing family. It's airing this month on Showtime and whether you are old enough to remember The Cowsills -- or even the TV sitcom they inspired, "The Partridge Family" -- this heart-wrenching tale is a must-see, from family squabbles and singing with mom to a mentally and physically abusive dad and massive lost revenues to latter-day triumphs and tribulations. Joining me today to talk about his family, the band and the documentary is Paul Cowsill. Paul still leads The Cowsills, but his day...

Family Band: The Cowsills Story (Documentary Film 2011) The Cowsills are the real life inspiration behind The Partridge Family but The Cowsills' story is not a sitcom. Their story is raw and honest, tragic and beautiful. The Cowsills personify The Baby Boomer Generation in all of its extremes and eccentricities. All of its tragedies and triumphs. Their public image was talent and charm. Their private reality was secrets and fear. One of the most musically gifted American Families to hit the top of the pop charts, The Cowsills rose to fame, success and stardom in the late sixties. Five years later, their star came crashing back down to earth. This year, you will learn what happened to The Cowsills.

The year was 1990, the Gulf War in Iraq had transpired and a large segment of Americans were engaged in the sort of saber rattling that always seems to accompany these overseas meddlings. The PR firm Hill & Knowlton had been hired to sell the war to the American public (for the whole sleazy story see http://www.prwatch.org/books/tsigfy10.html/ ) and Howard Stern was one of those who fell for the hype; to the extent that he and his staff wrote a crass set of lyrics containing every depravity they could conjure describing how they'd like to see the people of Iraq treated. They were the sort of lyrics that would have looked very much at home framed on a wall of Abu Ghraib prison over a decade later. Enter the Cowsills. When the King of Crass presented the lyrics to the band and requested the...

We Can Fly
The Cowsills 1968
See how the fluffy clouds move by us (See how the clouds move by).
See how the morning mist can hide us away, (hide us away)
And how the day (and how it’s) is so much fun!
Isn’t it groovy in a daydream? (Dreaming today)
Doesn’t it seem the day could never end? (Could never end)
And so, my friend, we’re one.
Baby, it’s funny how I can feel so sunny?
When you’re beside me, we can fly!
Oh, we can fly!
Hey, Mr. Wind, just keep us sailing. (Keep us sailing along)
High in the sky, there’s no curtaining our fun,
So everyone, come on!
Hey, you on the ground!
Take a look up, and see what we’ve found!
Nothing to tie us, bluebirds come up to guide us.
When you’re beside me, we can fly!
Oh, we can fly!
We can fly! Hey! Everyone on the ground, let’s fly!
