Tell MAMA

Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks) is a national project which records and measures anti-Muslim incidents in the United Kingdom. It is modelled on the Jewish Community Security Trust (CST) and like the CST it also provides support for victims, working closely with organisations such as Victim Support.

Tell MAMA was launched on 21 February 2012 by Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government and is co-ordinated by the interfaith organisation Faith Matters. Both groups were founded by social entrepreneur Fiyaz Mughal OBE, a former adviser to the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, on Interfaith and Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism. The organisation's statistics have been the subject of debate, but were referenced by the Rt Hon Theresa May MP when speaking at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors on the 23rd of March 2015.

The project was set up with UK Government backing. In November 2012, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced a further £214,000 annual funding for Tell MAMA up to October 2013. Tell MAMA was funded for an initial period of 2 years and was funded on the basis of being self-sustaining after two years. Tell MAMA covers a range of issues and cases, and also works with mosques across the country. Journalist Andrew Gilligan wrote about the organisation's data collection in 2013, though the allegations have been disputed by Tell MAMA. The group's funding was not renewedafter it reported a rise in Islamophobia after the murder of Lee Rigby, but did not report that the activity was online.

Tell Mama

Tell Mama is the eighth studio album by American singer Etta James. The album was released August 21, 1968 on Cadet Records and was produced by Rick Hall. Tell Mama was James's first album since 1963 to enter the Billboard 200 albums chart and contained her first Top 10 and 20 hits since 1964. It was also her second release for the Cadet record label.

Background

Tell Mama was recorded at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, on the encouragement of Leonard Chess, who successfully convinced James to record the album there. Allmusic reviewer, Bill Dahl praised the album's production, called its sessions, "skin-tight." At Muscle Shoals, producers were able to mix her voice in order for it to sound stronger on previously-distorted high notes. The album's title track became one of the biggest hits of James's career, becoming her first Top 10 hit in four years and her highest-peaking single on the Billboard Pop chart, reaching #23. It has since been considered one of her all-time classics. The album's cover of Otis Redding's "Security" also became a major hit, reaching the Top 20 on the R&B singles chart, while also making the Pop Top 40.

Tell Mama (song)

"Tell Mama" is a song written by Clarence Carter, Marcus Daniel and Wilbur Terrell (though some recordings give the sole songwriting credit to Carter). It is best known in its 1967 recording by Etta James. An earlier version of the song was first recorded in 1966 by Carter, as "Tell Daddy".

Carter co-wrote "Tell Daddy", and recorded it at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, on 4 October 1966. His recording, released on the Fame label, became Carter's first chart hit, reaching no.35 on the Billboard R&B chart in early 1967.

"Tell Mama" - the Etta James version

After a period of isolation, Etta James returned to recording in 1967. Chess Records' executive Leonard Chess persuaded her to record at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, which had recently produced a string of hits for such singers as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge. Using producer Rick Hall, and musicians including Barry Beckett, David Hood, Roger Hawkins and Spooner Oldham, many of whom had also worked on Clarence Carter's recordings, she recorded an album, Tell Mama, there between August and December 1967. The song "Tell Mama" – with the original version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" as its B-side – was released as a single on the Cadet label, and entered the R&B chart in November 1967. It rose to no.10 on the R&B chart, and no.23 on the pop chart, becoming her biggest pop hit.
