Study: Miami, New Orleans Can’t Be Saved From Rising Sea Levels
According to a recently published study, Miami, New Orleans, and a number of other US cities are already beyond the point of being saved from rising sea levels.
As the world's temperature continues to increase, the West Antarctic ice sheet is under threat, and carbon emissions are still being produced at high levels.
According to a study recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, over 20 million people in the US are at risk of having their cities and homes completely lost to the rising sea based on current trends.
Though a drastic reduction in current carbon emission rates and a resulting stabilization o

Focus: Fighting TB and diabetes in the Pacific Islands
Many of the 22 countries that comprise the Pacific Islands region have very high rates of type-2 diabetes (upto 37% prevalence in adults) and high rates of TB as well (upto 343 cases per 100000). In fact 7 of the world’s top 10 countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes are in the Pacific Islands region: Tokelau, Marshall Islands, Vanuatu, Cook island, Nauru, Micronesia and Kiribati. Similarly, some countries also have very high TB rates. It is no wonder then that the problem of TB-diabetes co-morbidity afflicts this region as well.

Pacific Current Change Slowed Global Warming
Pacific Current Change Slowed Global Warming
Pacific Current Change Slowed Global Warming
In 1999, a circulation pattern in the Pacific Ocean changed suddenly, which some scientists say made global temperatures plateau and led to the global warming "hiatus."
A new study, published this month in Geophysical Research Letters, lends weight to this theory. Using records stretching back to 1791, the study finds that a switch in the pattern has always been accompanied by changes in temperature in the north and south Pacific Ocean. It also affects the ocean heat content.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust_Territory_of_the_Pacific_Islands
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory in Micronesia (western Pacific) administered by the United States from 1947 to 1986.
History
The territory comprised the former South Pacific Mandate, a League of Nations Mandate administered by Japan and taken by the U.S. in 1944.
The TTPI entered UN trusteeship on July 18, 1947 and was designated a "strategic area" in its 1947 trusteeship agreement. As such, its formal status as a UN trust territory could be terminated only by the Security Council, and not by the General Assembly as with other trust territories.[citation needed] The United States Navy controlled the TTPI from a headquarters in Guam until 1951, when the United States Department of the Interior took over control, administering the territory from a base in Saipan.
A Congress of Micronesia first levied an income tax in 1971. It affected mainly foreigners working at military bases in the region.
On October 21, 1986, the U.S. ended its administration of the Marshall Islands District. The termination of U.S. administration of the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and the Mariana Islands districts of the TTPI soon followed on November 3, 1986. The Security Council formally ended the trusteeship for the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Mariana Islands, and Marshall Islands districts on December 22, 1990. On May 25, 1994, the Council ended the trusteeship for the Palau District, after which the U.S. and Palau agreed to establish the latter's independence on October 1.
Current status
The area is now divided into four territories:
Sovereign states in free association with the United States
The following sovereign states have become freely associated with the United States under the Compact of Free Association (COFA).
- Republic of the Marshall Islands - Established 1979, COFA effective October 21, 1986
- Federated States of Micronesia - Established 1979, COFA effective November 3, 1986
- Republic of Palau - Established 1981, COFA effect October 1, 1994
Unincorporated organized territory of the United States
- Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands - New constitution partially effective January 1, 1978, and fully effective November 4, 1986...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Islands
The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Marshallese: Aolepān Aorōkin M̧ajeļ), is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia, with the population of 68,480 people spread out over 24 low-lying coral atolls, comprising 1,156 individual islands and islets. The islands share maritime boundaries with the Federated States of Micronesia to the west, Wake Island to the north, Kiribati to the south-east, and Nauru to the south. The most populous atoll is Majuro, which also acts as the capital...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Islands
The Caroline Islands (Islas Carolinas in Spanish, Karolinen in German) are a widely scattered archipelago of tiny islands in the western Pacific Ocean, to the north of New Guinea. Politically they are divided between the Federated States of Micronesia in the eastern part of the group, and Palau at the extreme western end. Historically, this area was also called Nuevas Filipinas or New Philippines as they were part of the Spanish East Indies and governed from Manila in the Philippines...

Though a drastic reduction in current carbon emission rates and a resulting stabilization of the ice sheet offer some hope for most of them, Miami and New Orleans are predicted to fall under rising sea levels.
Sacramento, Boston, Norfolk, Savannah, and Tampa are also on the researchers’ list of places that are beyond the point of saving.
Others have a fighting chance if carbon emissions revert back to levels found in 1950 by the year 2050.
Models show that New York City likely has until 2085 and Long Beach, California, until 2075 before they become submerged.
Jacksonville, Florida, on the other hand, only has roughly 20 years to see a significant reversal of current trends.

CNS spoke with Dr Richard Brostrom, State TB Branch Chief and Pacific Regional Medical Officer, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); in Sydney where the 5th Asia Pacific Region Conference on Lung Health was held.

English/Nat
A row has broken out in New Zealand over marking the first sunrise of the new millennium.
Residents on the Chatham Islands are furious that the New Zealand government is planning to stage the nation's 21st Century celebrations on the mainland - despite the fact that the Chathams see the sun 45 minutes before the rest of the world.
First light will be at 4:45 a.m. local time on January 1st. At the same moment, the clock will chime midnight in Tokyo and midday the previous day in middle America.
(UPSOUND - Maori music over scenic pictures for 20 seconds before beginning voice-over.)
The haunting sound of New Zealand's Maori people, echoing across the windswept summit of Mount Hakepa.
Here, 500 miles east of New Zealand's capital of Wellington, astronomers will see the first sunrise of the new millennium. Rival islands like Tonga and Kiribati have moved clocks, even datelines to be first, but to no avail.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"If we are looking at places where people are actually inhabiting then it's going to be Pitt Island."
SUPER CAPTION: Richard Hall, Astronomer
Pitt is the smaller of the Chatham Islands. Life is tough for its 67 permanent inhabitants. There's little respect for the politicians in far-off Wellington who islanders feel are ignoring their status as first to see the sun.
On Pitt, there's no shops and no restaurants. You eat what you can catch. It's survival of the fittest.
But Prime Minister Jenny Shipley says the fact that the sun comes up on the Chatham Islands 45 minutes before mainland New Zealand is irrelevant.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We've considered this carefully and while the Chatham Islands will see the sun - and it's not unusual might I say for them to feel left out - we think it's appropriate that it's on the mainland and that's the decision that's been taken."
SUPER CAPTION: Jenny Shipley, New Zealand Prime Minister
It's a decision the inhabitants of this picture postcard wilderness will now fight to change.
At Glory Bay, the last house on the eastern shore sits on the edge of tomorrow - the first home on earth to see the sun of the 21st century.
Few in government ever venture to this far-flung outpost to see how islanders have spent the past decade pursuing a policy of global conservation.
For the previous 200 years, Pitt's natural resources had been stripped bare by its own people.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We had to wake up and say what have we got for our children? What's happening tomorrow if we go on raping this island? We had to say, 'Look, cut it out.'"
SUPER CAPTION: "Bunty" Preece, Island Elder
Privately, local councillors are angry at their political rulers. But publicly, the Mayor wants to project a very different message.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think the message will be peace and harmony, brotherhood of man and environmental friendliness."
SUPER CAPTION: Pat Smith, Mayor
The new millennium represents a business opportunity for entrepreneurs like Lee Thomson. He opened this small brewery a year ago and hopes to toast the new century in anniversary ale.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, we hope to be selling a fair bit overseas regarding a concept, like 'Taste the millennium' or 'A taste of the millennium.'"
SUPER CAPTION: Lee Thomson, Brewery Owner
Those with a taste for horse racing will also have their thirst quenched.
The local racecourse plans a flood lit midnight millennium derby.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There will be a bit of betting going on and this is where you can take your first bet for the 21st century."
SUPER CAPTION: Eddie Fraser, Racing Club President
Sheep farming continues to be a key source of income but an influx of millennium visitors would give the economy a major boost.

A little of the sights, sounds, music, colours, peoples, arts, crafts and cultures of the Pasifika Festival 2009.
Kia ora, talofa lava, malo e lelei, ni sa bula vinaka, kia orana, fakaalofa lahi atu, kam na mauri, taloha ni, greetings.
One of the largest free events in the South Pacific, the Pasifika Festival comprises ten "villages", each from a differing South Pacific island community.
Now in its 17th year, this one day event is held annually in Western Springs park, Auckland, New Zealand.
The villages (in order of appearance): Tangata Whenua; Tokelau; Fiji; Samoa; Tuvalu; Niue; Cook Islands; Tonga; Tahiti and Kiribati.
TANGATA WHENUA
Meaning "people of the land" in Māori, this village presents the hosts - Ngati Whatua o Orakei.
TOKELAU
One of the smallest and most isolated island groups in the Pacific.
FIJI
Fierce warriors and friendly Fijian policemen usher entertainment and mat weaving, tapa printing and wood carving crafts.
SAMOA
Known throughout Polynesia as the "happy people", the Samoan village highlights food, dance and fashion, with traditional Samoan dishes such as cold pineapple salad, tropical ice cream and food prepared in an umu (earth oven); dance groups, bands and choirs and a fashion show, Fa'afetai Lava.
TUVALU
Tuvalu means "eight beautiful islands".
"Tuvalu culture is rare and unique
And hold a message we should seek
Hold our culture way up high
And our Tuvalu culture will never die.
I normally hear friendly waves on our island shore
when I was little
It is not anymore
The sound is getting louder and threatening
My Tuvalu island is going to disappear from the
rising sea level
Tuvalu,my beautiful Tuvalu I cry for you."
- Apiseka Eka
NIUE
Originating from the word "niu", meaning coconut, Niue literally translates as "here is a coconut". Also known as the "Rock of the Pacific", comprised of a single island, Niue is the largest raised coral atoll in the world.
With song, music, challenge dances (meke), traditional weaving, coconut grating, umu cooking and a range of handicrafts made from pandanus and coconut leaves.
Niue is also proud home to Miss Vanessa Marsh - Miss Niue and Miss South Pacific 2009.
COOK ISLANDS
The Cook Islands are known as the "Pearl of the Pacific".
To the sound of the conch shell, drumming, ukuleles and warm smiles, Cook Island dances make your feet and hips move in magical ways. Abundant delicacies, intricate handicrafts and rich resources are key features of this vibrant community.
TONGA
Tonga means "south" and is another highlight of the South Pacific.
Traditional Tongan music by Kava groups, tapa cloth making and mat weaving.
TAHITI
Tahiti is made up of 118 islands in five archipalle - Tuamotu, Marquases, Australle, Society and Gambier.
Home to the finest black pearls and a blend of Tahitian and French cultures.
KIRIBATI
Featuring traditional dances or mwaies, such as "Te Eitei" - where head and arm movements imitate the frigate bird, an I-Kiribati symbol of peace and freedom.
A chance to taste their foods and see Kiribati weaving and tilbuta (a traditional blouse, unique to the I-Kiribati women).

The ‘SODIS in Kiribati’ video describes a technique for disinfecting water in Kiribati. SODIS is an inexpensive, reliable and safe method that has spread throughout the developing world. Although more than five million people in 50 countries globally disinfect their drinking water with SODIS, this technique is hardly known in the Pacific region.
The video describes the benefits and the steps to disinfect drinking water using only the power of the sun. The video was produced nationally by the Kiribati Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) – Environmental Health Unit and was funded by the European Union through the Secretariat of th

With climate change posing a serious threat to the future of this island nation, the relocation of its people may be inevitable.
A proactive approach is being taken to address environmental and health problems associated with over-crowding in urban centres across all sectors of society.
Kiribati’s population is likely to double in size by 2025.

Responding to climate sensitive health risks in Kiribati’ is one of nine country-specific videos in the series ‘Climate Change Adaptation – the Pacific Way’, produced by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community through the €11.4 million European Union funded Global Climate Change Alliance: Pacific Small Island States (GCCA: PSIS) project.
The video highlights the lessons learnt in the ‘Improving Implementation of Environmental Health Surveillance and Response to Climate Sensitive Health Risks in Kiribati’ project. The project is implementing activities to improve the capacity of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, in particular the Environmental Health Unit. It will provide equipment and training to enable staff to monitor and respond to climate sensitive health risks in a more effective manner.

This is a training video made for Pacific Island artisanal fishers on methods for postharvest processing of sea cucumbers - DUBBED IN KIRIBATI language.
The video was produced as part of a research aid project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR project FIS-2010-096), within the Department of Foreign Affairs, Australia. Hard copies (DVD discs) with voice-overs in local languages will be distributed to coastal villages in Fiji, Tonga and Kiribati.
Sea cucumbers have been fished in the Pacific Islands for more than 150 years. They are processed, using artisanal methods, into a dried form called bêche-de-mer and exported to China.
Harvesting and selling sea cucumbers gives rural households vital sources of income for basic needs, health and education. In many Pacific Island villages, alternative livelihood activities are limited and fishing sea cucumbers offers one of the few income sources.
Research shows that a majority of Pacific Island fishers have had no information support to understand how to process the animals correctly. As a result, the quality of dried products is often poor and fishers get inferior prices. This problem contributes to a need to fish large quantities of sea cucumbers to meet economic needs and wastes the potential value of these resources for national economies.
The goal of the video is to help i-Kiribati fishers to make better income from the sea cucumbers that they collect and reduce the wastage of potential income and food from these aquatic resources. The video and project discourages excessive fishing, since these resources are vulnerable to over-exploitation, and we do not encourage fishers to harvest sea cucumbers. Rather, the project hopes to improve postharvest processing of catches that would be made by existing fishers. By spending more time on value-adding of the fishery harvests and gaining a better income from selling the dried sea cucumbers for export, fishers might need to fish less frequently. Whether, or not, this occurs is being determined by 'before-and-after' socio-economic surveys as part of the research component of the project.
The video was made by Southern Cross University, Australia, through its National Marine Science Centre. Neither the funding organisation, commissioned organisation nor partner organisations that produced this DVD have any financial gain or commercial interests in the sea cucumber industry.
The video closely follows methods presented in a KIRIBATI-translated training manual, which can be downloaded free at: http://aciar.gov.au/publication/cop026

The video was produced nationally by the Kiribati Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) – Environmental Health Unit and was funded by the European Union through the Secretariat of the Pacific Community implemented Global Climate Change Alliance: Pacific Small Island States (GCCA:PSIS) project.

While a relatively new concept, the world has been living with the climate change process for quite some time.
Over the span of years and decades, Pacific Islanders have grown more resilient, adapting to the slow, yet significant changes around them.
With climate change posing a serious threat to the future of this island nation, the relocation of its people may be inevitable.
A proactive approach is being taken to address environmental and health problems associated with over-crowding in urban centres across all sectors of society.
Kiribati’s population is likely to double in size by 2025.
This, combined with climatic issues like sea-level rise, loss of land and compromised food security, will cause many people to move and perhaps exacerbate the problem of urbanization and overcrowding in South Tarawa.
This would put families living in South Tarawa at even greater health risk.

The President of Kiribati landed on Millennium Island on Thursday, as his people made final preparations to be among the first to usher in the third millennium.
Teberuro Tito, who consolidated all of the islands of Kiribati into one time zone in 1994, is responsible for his nation's position as the doorkeepers of the century.
Tonga, which adopted daylight saving time this year to try and share the New Year honors, is also holding a celebration.
Kiribati's ceremony, however, is expected to be available to an audience of half the world's population through a broadcast coordinated by A-P-T-N.

Climate Change, Man vs. Nature on HOUSTON 8
Our climate is changing -- no doubt about it. Heat waves are sweeping the continent, drought is devastating the south, yet floods have destroyed much of the Mississippi River Valley... and across the globe tsunamis, hurricanes and tornadoes are racking up billions of dollars in damage and costing thousands of lives. So we ask, what is causing the planet to experience such drastic weather patterns -- is it just the normal cycle of nature or is man at the root of these changes? broadcast date, July 22, 2011

English/Nat
The President of Kiribati landed on Millennium Island on Thursday, as his people made final preparations to be among the first to usher in the third millennium.
Teberuro Tito, who consolidated all of the islands of Kiribati into one time zone in 1994, is responsible for his nation's position as the doorkeepers of the century.
Tonga, which adopted daylight saving time this year to try and share the New Year honors, is also holding a celebration.
Kiribati's ceremony, however, is expected to be available to an audience of half the world's population through a broadcast coordinated by A-P-T-N.
It's another beautiful day along the international dateline, as time edges ever closer to the historic changing of millenniums.
Here on Millennium Island that moment will come sooner than for most and the people of Kiribati are revelling in their role of welcoming it.
They hoisted their flag Thursday morning - its sunrise symbol a reflection of the nation's place in the world.
Technically, midnight strikes Kiribati and Tonga at the same time, despite Kiribati's more easterly position.
But while the debate rages over which island nation will really see the next century first, Kiribati's geographical position has ensured that it will be the first to see the sun dawning on a new millennium.
Kiribati's president arrived here on Wednesday from the country's main island, almost 3-thousand kilometers to the west.
He waded through the shark-infested waters to reach the shore.
President Tito is an avid fisherman, well acquainted with both the dangers and riches of the Pacific Ocean.
He will deliver a message of peace and happiness to the world at dawn on January the first.
It's a hugely responsible role for the tiny country, and all precautions are being taken to make sure it goes off without a hitch.
After the traditional application of coconut oil and fanning by his people, the president went in to the forest where camp has been set up in the place where he'll deliver his address.
When greeted by his gently swaying countrymen, tears sprung to the president's eyes, touched by seeing this island again repopulated after 100 years without a permanent resident.
He spoke to the islanders about the importance of the new millennium to people around the world - but especially its significance for Kiribati.
He urged that they carry a message to the international community about striking the proper balance between man and the environment.
As midnight struck, before the president's arrival, the islanders practised their ceremony 48 hours in advance of the real event.
The rehearsal went as planned, 70 performers coming together to chant and dance, and light a beacon of hope for the world.
The ceremony will be broadcast internationally to a potential audience of 3 (b) billion people - approximately half of the world's population.
The A-P-T-N crew which is producing the broadcast were impressed with the precision of their new media stars.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And you know the team is just beginning to build, out there, beavering away, getting their cameras set up. And I'm still amazed at the beauty of the dancers, they've managed to maintain their enthusiasm through all these months of rehearsal and now it's our job to bring it to the world."
SUPER CAPTION: Max Quinn, APTN Event Director
Hope and prosperity are the gifts that the people of Kiribati would like to bestow on the human race in the next millennium.
These gentle people are worried for their own future as global warming threatens to cause rising water tables to inundate their islands.
They will stay up through the night until the dawn, and weather permitting, will be the first to see the sun.

Six hundred people shed their clothes on a glacier in the Swiss Alps to bodily cry out for help against a planetary emergency: global warming.
The nude volunteers posed for us and renowned naked "installation" artist Spencer Tunick on the Aletsch Glacier.
Without clothes, the human body is vulnerable, exposed, its life or death at the whim of the elements. Global warming is stripping away our glaciers and leaving our entire planet vulnerable to extreme weather, floods, sea-level rise, global decreases in carrying capacity and agricultural production, fresh water shortages, disease and mass human dislocations.
If global warming continues at its current rate, most glaciers in Switzerland will completely disappear by 2080, leaving nothing but valleys and slopes strewn with rock debris.

Let's go for a bus (van, actually) ride from my hotel towards the capital island of Bairiki in Kiribati (or, Gilbert Islands, as it is known, or, the Tarawa Atoll) and let's experience how it feels to ride in one of these buses on a very dusty road (which, however, is under construction).
