With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014,

For the past decade, New Zealanders Joanne and Gareth Morgan have been living the semiretired lifestyle of their dreams, traveling around the world on motorcycles alongside a few of their closest friends. They've traversed all seven continents on their bikes, with routes as varied as Venice to Beijing, Florida to northern Alaska, and South Africa to London, just to name a few. Gareth funds his own trips, many of which he uses to pursue philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the social-investment space. He is able to do so with money he's made as an economist and investment manager—one who has earned the reputation for criticizing unethical practices in New Zealand's financial-services industry.
In late August, the Morgans embarked on their most ambitious journey yet, at least physically. The real journey began years ago, when they decided they wanted to ride the Baekdudaegan, a mountain range that stretches the length of North and South Korea's shared peninsula. After countless hours of negotiation and coordination with both governments, they were granted permission. It was, the Morgans believe, the first time anyone's ever traveled through both countries like that since the partitioning of Korea in 1945. By making the trip they hoped to demonstrate how Koreans can come together over what they have in common. To symbolize this, the Morgans took some stones from Paektu, a holy mountain in the North, and brought them to Hallasan, a similarly sacred peak in the South.
Joanne and Gareth shot the entirety of their trip, the footage from which they have graciously allowed us to cut into a short film that will premiere on VICE.com this month. In some ways, the footage makes the Korean coast look alternately like California, China, and Cuba. It's a beautiful view few foreigners have seen, and even if planning the road trip straight through the Demilitarized Zone required working within parameters set by the highly choreographed and restricted confines of North-South Korean diplomacy, this was a journey worth documenting from start to finish.

This is a documentary on my 12 days’ experiences in North Korea. The country is indeed a dystopian state that resembles every bit of Oceania of George Orwell’s 1984. You can find an equivalence here for everything from the Big Brother to the two-minute-hate.
North Koreans' total loyalty and piety for their dictators was also absolutely mind-blowing.
I am not a professional and this film is only intended to give you a sense of what’s happening in the most isolated place on Earth. It is truly a shame that a regime like North Korea still exists in the year of 2015.
Sorry if the quality of some parts of the film isn't ideal since North Korean government places a heavy restriction on filming equipments for tourists. My guides also forbid us from filming with more than one device for the most part.
Equipments used: GoPro Hero4 and iPhone 5S.

North Korea has always created a carefully choreographed image of itself, but have the Western media also created a false picture of life there? With rare access, this report tries to answer that question.
"They want to be more open. But they have been let down too many times by overseas journalists", says Ray Ferguson, of the Australia-North Korea Friendship Association. He claims that the regime is making real efforts to reach out. But heavy restrictions are still placed on journalists filming there. And a quick interview with a member of the public shows the pressure to tow the official line. "The U.S. imperialist invaders, we must drive them out!" Asking the guide whether people are "pretending" provokes the anxious response: "Don't use that word!" But Ray remains hopeful of change: "At least if you're engaging it creates a groundwork for better relations..".

Top 10 Mysteries of NORTH KOREA such as Kim Jon Un's respone to "The Interview", how Kim Jon Il is dead, yet still rules over all, and how they're citizens are being forced into cannabalizm due to lack of food.
Ten) Do they have nukes? Well they definitely have more Nik es than nukes, as President Kim Jong Un is obsessed by the shoes with the swoosh. However don’t underestimate this mysterious kingdom’s nuclear capability. With close ties to both China and Russia they are the equivalent of the skinny loudmouth at the bar who says he has some real tough friends, except this guy isn’t kidding. The UN has accused North Korea of selling weapons and nuclear technology to the highest bidder on several occasions, and like the asshole who jumps in at the last minute on eBay, these people are generally evil soulless bastards. Nine) Where did Kim Jong Un go for three weeks? In late 2014 Kim Jong Un vanished for nearly a month. The Korean Central News Agency blamed his absence on an “uncomfortable physical condition”, but rumours began to spread that a threat to the Kim dynasty’s power was on the rise. Kim had executed his uncle earlier that year, and there was concern amongst his generals that this had upset a few powerful factions. Eight) Why was Kim Jong Un limping? Before his disappearance Kim Jong Un was seen walking with a noticeable limp on several public occasions. Is this the uncomfortable physical condition we heard of? Or had Chuck Norris been tactically inserted into Korea to give Kim a well-overdue Roshambo? Most commentators believed it was caused by gout, as the chunky dictator seems to have inherited Kim Jong Il’s love of fine foods, strong alcohol and type 2 diabetes. Mmm sweet sweet diabetes. But could world-record 11 holes in one on an 18 hole golf course. Seven) Are they ruled by a dead man? Apparently so. Kim il Sung ruled North Korea from 1948 to 1994, but their constitution decrees that his corpse remai ns the Eternal President. Nobody knows to what extent old bonesy still rules over the kingdom, but as great respecters of tradition the North Koreans probably still follow most of his teachings. When his son Kim Jong Un died in 2011 he was declared the country’s Eternal General Secretary, which is pretty lame if you ask me. 6) Did they use secret technology in the World Cup? We’re talking about a country which claimed to have evidence that Unicorns existed, so you’ll forgive me for doubting they have the ability to create world-changing technology. Most of their tech turns out to be rebranded Chinese products, but then a few years ago a crazy rumour appeared. In 2010 North Korea made it to the soccer World Cup despite being a pretty poor team by all accounts. The coach claimed President Kim Jong il used invisible cell phones to provide him and the players with tactics during matches, as he was unhappy at the team’s performance. In the opening game a highly respectable 2-1 draw against Brazil then turned into a 7-0 spanking by Portugal. 5) Was Kim Jong Un the original choice to lead? Maybe not. The original successor to Kim Jong Il was his son Kim Jong Nam. Nam reportedly fell out of favour with his father because he was even more obsessed with the west than his half-brother Kim Jong U n. Considering Kim Jong Un eats mountains of cheese and is best friends with Dennis Rodman I find that hard to believe. Seriously, the kid worships American ballers so much he thinks Space Jam is a documentary. So what was Kim Jong Nam’s crime? Four) Do they kidnap foreign citizens? Yes, and the scary thing is nobody knows exactly how many. In 1986 a South Korean movie director and his leading actress emerged from the North after eight years in captivity. Why were they kidnapped? To remake famous movies for the North Korean public of course. Can you imagine the North Korean version of Oliver Twist? With all the starving orphans they’d rename it “Glorious Feast of Greedy Dirty Children”. Three) Did they really hack Sony Enterainment because of The Interview? Maybe. The FBI sure thinks so. Some experts on coding say it was just made to look like they did it, like when you accidentally tread dog poop into your house and quickly swap shoes with your kid brother. Most North Koreans only have access to an intranet, not the actual internet, so if the attack did come from the North it was almost certainly state-sponsored.
Two) Did North Koreans really resort to cannibalism?
It’s certainly possible. When Kim Il Sung died the country faced a major crisis. Flooding caused massive crop failure, and a huge debt to the Soviets prevented the importation of food, leading to a nation-wide famine and an estimated 3.5 million deaths. While Kim Jong Un imported vast quantities of expensive Cognac and Sushi, his people scraped together anything they could find that was barely digestible.

North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.
With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.
VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.

There are 27,000 North Korean defectors who escaped through life threatening dangers. They came to the South with big hope but were discouraged due to the language barrier. They were discriminated and ignored mostly because of the way they talk, with unfamiliar accents and vocabulary. Young North Korean defectors were no exceptions. They had a hard time adjusting to new schools. We believed Koreas’ reunification would be possible only when these young defectors can get good education. So we created the South Korean-North Korean translator, which you cannot even find in Google.

Title: President Park, Carter reaffirm strong S. Korea-U.S. military alliance
Our top story this morning...
President Park Geun-hye, on her third day in Washington, paid a visit to the Pentagon for the first time.
There, she reaffirmed the strong military ties between South Korea and the United States.. and pledged to further expand their cooperation.
Hwang Sung-hee reports from Washington.
"Korea thanks you. We go together "
That was President Park′s key message during her visit to the Pentagon on Thursday.
During her talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, President Park called for expanded cooperation in cyber-security and space in their joint efforts to counter North Korean threats.
Saying the U.S. commitment to South Korea is as firm as steel, Carter said he expected Seoul and Washington to closely cooperate in dealing with North Korea′s provocations in the future.
The meeting comes amid concerns of a possible long-range rocket launch by North Korea.
President Park also met with South Korean and American soldiers, calling them the core of their strong alliance.
"As I see South Korean and American soldiers working shoulder-to-shoulder, I think you, standing together on the front line of freedom, are the heart of the South Korea-U.S. alliance."
Following her visit to the Pentagon, President Park held a luncheon meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the Naval Observatory.
The two reaffirmed the South Korea-U.S. alliance and agreed to further strengthen their bilateral cooperation on both regional and global issues.
"President Park also met with U.S. officials and academics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies... to explain South Korea′s diplomatic policies. She will wrap up her four-day visit on Friday by holding a summit with U.S. President Barack Obama.

North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment.
'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world.
Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right?
'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not.

This doucmentary about the truth life in Norrth Korea today. It's heart breaking to see all those children being lied to and being taught to hate something they are unlikely to ever experience enough to make up their own minds. The Western system is far from perfect but at least we have freedom of thought and the freedom to improve our lives where we are willing to do the work. I would not exchange what I have for what those poor people are forced to live under.
If you think about it, North Korea is contradictory. The leadership works off of the "juche" ideal that they can make it on their own and they emphasize their country and people and they despise America and the West but....North Koreans all wear Western style clothing, hair-styles, some lucky ones watch a TV that was invented BY the West...using electricity that was invented BY the West and talking on phones that were invented BY the West...and the few that drive cars...hey-they were invented BY the West. Lol North Korea is crazy. Although we established that a long time ago.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

*** Some individuals directly connected with the North Korean government have been working to have this film removed from YT and other web sites - first via ambiguous, threatening emails, later through baseless demands and now by flagging the film online for arbitrary, unfounded reasons. I want to assure everyone that I have completed this film with great ethical concern, full transparency and as much as possible in communication with parties who may have been affected by the film. I was not undercover, I was truthful about everything I did every step of the way. YT: I have all proper documentation. I'm doing all my best to keep the film up. If they succeed in shutting it down, i will do my best to re-upload along with a list of alternative web sites where you can see it. ***

wn.com/Dprk The Land Of Whispers (North Korea Travel Documentary) (2013)

The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters is a 2010 book by Brian Reynolds Myers. Based on a study of the propaganda produced in North Korea for internal consumption, Myers argues that the guiding ideology of North Korea is a race-based nationalism derived from Japanese fascism, rather than any form of Communism.
Brian Reynolds Myers was born in the United States and was educated on the graduate level in Germany.[1] He is an editor of The Atlantic magazine and the author of A Reader's Manifesto,[2] as well as of Han Sorya and North Korea Literature (1994), which was the only book in English about North Korean literature until Tatiana Gabroussenko's literary history Soldiers on the Cultural Front (2010). Myers has studied North Korea for twenty years and is fluent in Korean.[3] He holds an assistant professorship in international studies at Dongseo University in South Korea.[2]
For the book, Myers studied North Korean mass culture with reference to domestically published novels, films, and serials available at the Ministry of Unification in Seoul.[3][4] Myers claims his analysis differs from that of conventional North Korea watchers, because he focuses on internal Korean-language propaganda, rather than on Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) external broadcasts and English-language reports from South Korea.
The Cleanest Race is divided into two sections: the first covers North Korean history through its propaganda, from Korea under Japanese rule to the 2009 imprisonment of American journalists by North Korea.[6] The second section analyzes themes in the propaganda, including chapters such as "Mother Korea", Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, perceptions of foreigners, and South Korea.[5]
Techniques of propaganda analysis by Myers include translation of poems, discussion of metaphors and monumental architecture, and description of racist tropes.[6] The book also contains sixteen separate pages of color illustrations,[5] including reprints of posters that ethnically caricature Japanese and Americans[7] and which portray the late leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il as maternal figures.[8]
The Cleanest Race argues that the ideology of the North Korean government's is founded on far-right politics rather far-left politics. It notes that the North Korean government is xenophobic and militaristic. It cites a report of a mob attack on Black Cuban diplomats and the forcing of female North Koreans to abort mixed children.[4][7] It says that the 2009 North Korean constitution omits all mention of Communism.[7] The author argues that Juche is not the leading ideology of North Korea. Rather, he surmises, it was designed in order to trick foreigners.[4]
The author says North Korea's government does not base its ideology on Marxism–Leninism or Neo-Confucianism. He instead links it to Japanese fascism.[9] He states that the government's racist criteria for national identity paints its genetically Korean citizens as innocent and morally virtuous (as opposed to foreigners) but militarily weak,[6] requiring Kim Il Sung's charismatic guidance and protection.[3] The author supposes that this may be a strategy by the government to decrease the amount of repression and surveillance needed to control that public.[3]
According to Myers, North Korean government propaganda portrays South Korea as a land polluted by foreign domination, particularly by the permanent presence of American troops. Anti-Americanism is the cornerstone of North Korean foreign policy.[4]
Similarly, internal propaganda within North Korea portrays American humanitarian efforts such as food aid as signs of American cowardice and make no distinction "between 'good' American workers and 'bad' American capitalists".[3] He laments that North Koreans openly flout the "dictates of an impure world" as inapplicable to the pure Korean race.

Welcome to North Korea where you have to follow your guide’s instructions and only take pictures of what we say. To some the people are repressed, though they prefer to describe themselves as "protected," at least on camera. Life here is the result of a unique 70-year social experiment in which the people are "shielded" from the "corrupting influence" of the outside world. Dynastic leader Marshal Kim Jong-un, who inherited the job from his father and grandfather, continues their political heritage. An RTD film crew was granted rare access to this unique country, which may seem to have leapt from the pages of a dystopian novel, to see what life is really like and what the people really think of their homeland and its leader.
