On October 2, 1968, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson strikes out 17 Detroit Tigers in the first game of the World Series, breaking Sandy Koufax’s record for the most strikeouts in a Series game. Though the Cards ended up losing the Series in seven games, Gibson pitched three and struck out an unprecedented 35 batters.
Gibson was recovering from an injury--the year before, a Roberto Clemente line drive had smashed his ankle--but he still managed to win 22 games in 1968, with one 15-game winning streak that included 10 of his 13 shutouts. He started 34 games and finished 28 (an incredible 304 2/3 innings of play) and in one remarkable 96-inning stretch he allowed just two runs. His earned-run average was 1.12, the fourth-lowest ever.
Gibson was the National League’s MVP in 1968, but his weren’t the year’s only extraordinary accomplishments on the mound. Tigers pitcher Denny McLain (who lost twice to Gibson in the ’68 Series) won 31 games. Dodger Don Drysdale threw six shutouts in a row--a record 58 2/3 scoreless innings. The Cards and the Giants threw back-to-back no-hitters, one against the other, and the Astros beat the Mets by scoring just one run after an exhausting 24 innings.
People called it the Year of the Pitcher, and it didn’t happen by accident. The home-run-heavy early 1960s had inspired baseball commissioner Ford Frick to try to prevent batters from batting quite so well, for fear that the game would become too lopsided for fans to enjoy. Frick raised the pitchers’ mound from 10 inches to 15, and he implemented a bigger strike zone. As a result, batting averages tumbled. Only six players hit over .300 in 1968, and Carl Yastrzemski’s .301 was the lowest average ever to win a league batting title.
Pitchers were happy, but almost no one else was. Commissioner William Eckert was fired at the end of the season for not doing more to help hitters. The next year, new commissioner Bowie Kuhn reintroduced the 10-inch pitchers’ mound and the smaller strike zone, and Rod Carew won the AL title with a .332 average. Since then, the designated hitter; the shrinking strike zone; smaller ballparks; weight training and steroids; and livelier baseballs have all boosted batting averages and made it harder to pitch as successfully as Gibson and his peers.
But Gibson took the changes in stride. He struck out 10 Pirates and walked three in his only no-hitter in August 1971. Three years later, he pitched his 3,000th strikeout--only the second in MLB history to do so--to Cesar Geronimo of the Cincinnati Reds. (He’d throw 3,117 in all.) He was a first-ballot selection to the Hall of Fame in 1981, and fans voted him to the All-Century Team in 1999. His statue stands outside Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

1968 World Series, Game 1 Tigers @ Cardinals
Fans overflowed Busch Stadium for Game 1 to watch the highly anticipated matchup of the Major League's top two pitchers, the Cardinals Bob Gibson (22--9, 1.12 ERA) and the Tigers Denny McLain (31--6, 1.96 ERA). Gibson was looking to become the first National League pitcher to win six World Series games while McLain would be pitching in his first World Series game. Indeed the Cardinals had far more

While great strides have been made in scholarship on Palestinian citizens of Israel, less attention has been paid to their positionality within broader Arab cultural and political formations. This paper seeks to address this gap through a close reading of the Seventh World Youth Festival, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from July 26 to August 6, 1968. This cultural festival, which brought together over 20,000 leftist activists from around the world, provided a rare opportunity for Palestinian members of the Israeli communist Rakah delegation, including famed Palestinian poets Mahmud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim, to meet face-to-face with some of the roughly 500 Arabs in attendance.
During the festival many Arab delegates eagerly sought out Darwish and Qasim, who were preceded by their reputation as “resistance poets,” but others saw them as violating the Arab boycott of Israel by “accepting” that country’s citizenship. Within this complex political environment, I argue that Palestinian festival participants from the shatat (exile) played a key role in helping to demystify the Palestinian citizens of Israel to a wider Arab audience. Through a discursive analysis of contemporary press reports, memoirs, literary works and interviews with participants, I show how these Palestinians served as a bridge between Palestinian citizens of Israel and the wider Arab world.
By examining these dynamics, this paper sheds light on the discursive genealogy of a political vocabulary that came to include more fully the Palestinian citizens of Israel.

Both pitchers were highly competitive, fast workers, sporting overpowering fastballs coupled with excellent control.

No copyright infringement is intended with this, or any other video I upload. The purpose of uploading this video is for the viewing pleasure for those that watch it.
This episode is called "Disneyland: From the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow".
Hosted by Marcia Minor, one of Disneyland's embassadors, this is a very busy episode, as the Pirates of the Carribean gets top billing, as the evolution of that attraction, from Walt Disney's orignal planning to the creation of the pirates, to the opening ceremony in New Orleans Square (which is also profiled), and even an edited version of the ride itself is shown.
Also, we see the creation of a whole new Tomorrowland, again from blueprints and designs to it's actual opening. And we see several Tomorrowland attractions open. Foremost among them is the Peoplemover, which takes the guests through Tomorrowland. If you look closely, you'll see Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney, traveling on the Peoplemover in this part of the program.
Other Tomorrowland attractions shown include "Flight to the Moon", where we see a simulated flight to the Moon, a Journey Through Inner Space, and of course, the Carousel Theather of Progress, which had a short stay at Disneyland. As part of that attraction, you see a glimpse into the future of what would become Walt Disney World, where the Carousel Theather of Progress moved to for good in 1973.
And of course, no Disneyland presentation would be complete without watching some of the nighttime festivities, and we see what goes on in some of Disneyland's other "lands", all culminating with a spectacular fireworks display in the tradition of Disneyland.
All rights and credits go to the Walt Disney Company and those that created the video and audio, including the music used in the program. That includes the Disney Channel, as I recorded this program on their Vault Disney block more than a decade ago.
If there are any others who I'm forgetting, please let me know so I can add them to the list of those to credit.
There's a chance that this video will either be taken down, not allowed up, or I'll be asked to take it down. If I'm asked to, I will take it down.

It's World War II in the Philippines in 1945. The Japanese are beaten in the Luzon and Colonel John Henry Hannegan, who had led a group of Philippino Guerrillas against the Japanese for the last 3 years, is now taking his revenge by hunting down enemy stragglers as a personal sport, using starved rats, dogs, homemade gasoline bombs, and traps, anything to flush them out of the caves, and taking no prisoners. Hannegan says "They hunted us down like dogs for three years. Now it's my turn. It's my right." Hannegan calls it "the hunt." An American reporter who has been covering Hannegan's courageous attacks against the Japanese for the last three years makes contract with Hannegan and his men and finds war is not what he thought it was and is disillusioned by the real Colonel Hannegan, a far different man than the one he wrote about from back in the States. But the Japanese are not quite through. Led by a fanatical Japanese Major, the Japanese stragglers form into a large battalion and begin slaughtering everything in their path, civilian (including women and children) and soldier alike, finally threatening an old Spanish mission that now houses 100 or more wounded Japanese soldiers. The Japanese Major intends to kill those wounded, who have in his opinion violated Bushido, which prohibits surrender. Hannegan, with maybe 30 men (25 of his Philippinos and a squad of American soldiers), under pressure from the doctors at the mission and the reporter, is compelled to defend the mission against the 300 marauding Japanese, resulting in an climactic Alamo type battle.

An American reporter who has been covering Hannegan's courageous attacks against the Japanese for the last three years makes contract with Hannegan and his men and finds war is not what he thought it was and is disillusioned by the real Colonel Hannegan, a far different man than the one he wrote about from back in the States.

Freiburger and Finnegan think this is the best episode so far! It's the longest, too. This show has it all: a Mad-Max-vibe 1968 Dodge Charger built with motorhome parts, sideways Dukes-style action, lots of low-buck wrenching, hilarious snafus, and cameo appearances by the Macho Grande from episode 8, the '66 Buick Special convertible from a pre-Roadkill episode, the ramp truck from episode 20, and the Fury from episode 22. Enjoy the last Roadkill of 2013!

Whicker's World is an award-winning British television documentary series that ran from 1958 to 1994, presented by journalist and broadcaster Alan Whicker.
Originally a segment on the BBC's Tonight programme in 1958, Whicker's World became a fully-fledged television series in its own right in the 1960s. The series was first shown by the BBC until 1968, and then by ITV from 1969 to 1983, when it was produced by Yorkshire Television, in which Whicker himself was a shareholder. The series returned to the BBC in 1984, and to ITV again in 1992
François Duvalier (14 April 1907 -- 21 April 1971), also known as 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, was the President of Haiti from 1957 until his death in 1971. He opposed a military coup d'état in 1950, and was elected president in 1957 on a populist and black nationalist platform. His rule, based on a purged military, a rural militia known as the Tonton Macoute and the use of a personality cult and voodoo, resulted in the murder of an estimated 30,000 Haitians and the exile of many more. Ruling as President for Life from 1964 until his death in 1971, Duvalier was initially known for successfully fighting diseases, gaining him the nickname 'Papa Doc' ("Daddy Doc[tor]" in French). He was succeeded by his son, Jean-Claude, nicknamed "Baby Doc".[

Michael Matusow (born April 30, 1968 in Los Angeles, California) is an American professional poker player, residing in Henderson, Nevada. Matusow's nickname of "The Mouth" reflects his reputation for trash-talking at the poker table. He is also known for sometimes ruining hours or days of good play with a single misjudgment, (known as a "Mike Matusow Blow-up" or "Mike Matusow Meltdown").
Matusow began playing poker seriously in the early 1990s, first while working as a poker dealer, then as a professional player. His successes include being a five-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, and the winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.

Vince Edwards is an American agent in this cult classic based on the best seller by James Mayo (Stephen Coulter). Great musical score by David Whitaker. Also with Judy Geeson, Peter Vaughn and Diana Dors. Directed by David Miller. One of the screenwriters was William Bast who was James Dean's roommate and biographer. Gabor Szabo - 1968 Bacchanal
A beautiful CD which manages to burn with intensity and smolder with a quiet glow. Szabo mixes his familiar style with a subtle use of feedback on a well-programmed group of originals and pop covers, traversing a range of styles – from jazz to rock and Latin to raga. This is perhaps the best record of Szabo’s superior 1960’s quintet, featuring classically-trained guitarist Jimmy Stewart.
"Three King Fishers" and "Love is Blue" were used to score the film SURVIVAL IN THE SEA, a 29-minute documentary directed by Richard Wormser for Life Nature Library. The 16-mm film, part of the World We Live In Series, studies the struggle for survival among sea creatures and explains some of the reasons why fish have adapted through natural selection.
Doug Payne
After recording four albums for Impulse in 1967, the distinctive guitarist Gabor Szabo cut three records for the Skye label in 1968, of which this LP, Bacchanal, is the strongest. Szabo's regular group of the era is heard on record for the last time: guitarist Jimmy Stewart, bassist Louis Kabok, drummer Jim Keltner and percussionist Hal Gordon. With the exception of two Szabo originals, the material is comprised of current pop tunes including two songs by Donovan, "Love Is Blue," "The Look of Love" and "Theme from the Valley of the Dolls." Despite what should have been a complete lack of potential, the Hungarian guitarist uplifts the material and mostly turns the pieces into worthwhile jazz.
