Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat
The Bosnian village of Majdan is preparing to hand over control to the Serbs, but not without a fight.
Majdan is one of the few villages occupied solely by Bosnian Croats who fear the Serbs will re-launch attacks on their homes despite the presence of IFOR.
Many villagers cannot decide whether to stay or go..but they're united in calling for Majdan to be removed from the boundaries of the new Serb Republic under the Dayton Accord.
Majdan lies just southwest of Mrkonjic Grad in Bosnia where the Serbs will set up their regional seat of government.
IFOR troops are due to move in in coming weeks to oversee the transfer of power to the Bosnian Serbs under the Dayton Peace Deal.
But the signs show clearly the mood..Majdan must stay Bosnian Croatian according to its 600 or so residents - all Croats.
The village has always been Croatian despite being surrounded by towns dominated by Bosnian Serbs.
Here locals rarely travel outside the boundaries of the village and know little about what the Serb takeover will mean.
At Sunday mass the prayers are for peace.
The village was hit several times during the war by gangs of Serb extremists who tried to burn down the church building and robbed homes.
Incendiaries were thrown through the church windows, leaving their mark.
Many of the men were committed to forced labour.
Father Visaticki the local Catholic priest tells the congregation he has heard from the Bishop, who is urging villagers not to leave Majdan until he can come and talk to them.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat)
"I don't know what is ruling behind the mountains but I think it shouldn't be anything that could destroy us. I think that the worst is behind us. And that there is no reason that anybody should leave his home now."
SUPER CAPTION: Catholic priest - Adolf VISATICKI
But for villagers the presence of IFOR offers little comfort.
It's an uncertain time.
What they fear the most is that Serbs will attack their homes at night when IFOR soldiers have gone.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat)
"This peace brought me the biggest uncertainty - and not only for me, but for all Catholics around here."
SUPER CAPTION: Villager
After the weekend service, residents gather at the school hall to discuss their future.
They are calling on IFOR to lobby on their behalf for the village and the District of Jajce east of Majdan to be removed from the boundaries of the new Serb Republic and included within the Muslim-Croat Federation.
IFOR says while a decision is being made, it will do what it can to allay villagers' fears.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Ultimately we hope they will stay. Clearly we don't want to have more refugees in this country when already there are many. We'll do all in our path to get them to stay and that will be through liaison with the Bosnian Serb authorities so that they can hopefully provide the necessary guarantees to get them to remain in their houses."
SUPER CAPTION: British IFOR spokesman, Major Alistair ROSS
IFOR says it will try to organise a meeting between the new Serb mayor of Mrkonjic Grad and the townsfolk of Majdan to reassure them they are safe.
Despite the peace, the banner which greets all visitors to this Croatian village does not yet extend its welcome to the Serbs.

STORYLINE:
Residents in the small town of Kalinovik, in eastern Bosnia, held a demonstration on Sunday to protest against the arrest of Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic.
Some three thousand protesters, including many dressed in T-shirts bearing Mladic's picture, expressed anger against the neighbouring Serb authorities at what they see as a betrayal of their former military leader.
Support for Mladic is particularly strong in Kalinovik because of its proximity to the village where he was born.
Sunday's crowd comprised of people from other predominantly Serb towns in eastern Bosnia, who arrived there on buses adorned with photos of Mladic in military uniform.

STORYLINE
Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu on Monday welcomed the victory of Pro Western incumbent Boris Tadic in Serbia's presidential election.
Tadic edged Tomislav Nikolic, an ultranationalist ally of former President Slobodan Milosevic, by a narrow margin in Sunday's election.
The result "indicates it's time for Serbia to leave the past behind, especially on their radical views for Kosovo and to look forward to working together," Sejdiu told AP Television.
"People spoke in Serbia, the electorate decided," he added.
Ethnic Albanians have boycotted Serbian elections since the early 1990s and in the provincial capital, Pristina, some said it did not matter who had won the Serb elections as Kosovo's future was clear.
"For Kosovo Albanians here it doesn't have an impact because we have our government and soon our state," local Sabit Fetahu said.
Kosovo Serbs in the town of Gracanica, south of the provincial capital Pristina and in the divided Kosovan city of Mitrovica had mixed reactions to Tadic's win.
"I only hope that he can lift Serbia and Kosovo up. We need a better life, we need more jobs and I only hope things can change for the better," local Milan Angelovski said in Mitrovica.

In this episode we feature a special address by Patriarch Irinej of Serbia during his visit to the All Serbian Saints Serbian Orthodox Church in Mississauga.
Irinej is the 45th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Serbs, since 22 January 2010. His full title is His Holiness the Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, Serbian Patriarch Irinej.
The attraction of the Serbian pavilion is contained in both its youth, and warm hospitality. This year the beauty of our costumes, ethno decorated room, Serbian cusine, great entertainment and amazing folklore performances, will take you to Serbia, as we celebrate our theme of “One Heart, One Soul”.
We hope you enjoy our show and we look forward to you joining us on OMNI Television.

Watch Serbian Police Demand a Bribe

The Yugoslav Wars were ethnic conflicts fought from 1991 to 1999 on the territory of former Yugoslavia. The wars accompanied the breakup of the country, where its constituent republics declared independence, but the issues of ethnic minorities in the new countries (chiefly Serbs in central parts and Albanians in the southeast) were left unresolved after those republics were recognized internationally. The wars are generally considered to be a series of largely separate but related military conflicts occurring and affecting most of the former Yugoslav republics:
War in Slovenia (1991)
Croatian War of Independence (1991--1995)
Bosnian War (1992--1995)
Kosovo War (1998--1999), including the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia
The wars mostly resulted in peace accords, involving full international recognition of new states, but with massive economic damage in the region.
Initially the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) sought to preserve the unity of the whole of Yugoslavia by crushing the secessionist governments; however the JNA increasingly came under the influence of the Serbian government of Slobodan Milošević that evoked Serbian nationalist rhetoric and was willing to support the Yugoslav state insofar as using it to preserve the unity of Serbs in one state; as a result the JNA began to lose Slovenes, Croats, Kosovar Albanians, Bosniaks, and ethnic Macedonians, and effectively became a Serb army. According to the 1994 United Nations report, the Serb side did not aim to restore Yugoslavia, but to create a "Greater Serbia" from parts of Croatia and Bosnia.
Often described as Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, the conflicts have become infamous for the war crimes involved, including ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and rape. These were the first conflicts since World War II to be formally judged genocidal in character and many key individual participants were subsequently charged with war crimes. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the UN to prosecute these crimes.
According to the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Yugoslav Wars resulted in the deaths of 140,000 people. The Humanitarian Law Center writes that in the conflicts in former Yugoslav republics at least 130,000 people lost their lives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslav_Wars
Yugoslavia (Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian, Slovene: Jugoslavija, Југославија) was a country in Southeast Europe during most of the 20th century. It came into existence after World War I in 1918[ii] under the name of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes by the merger of the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (itself formed from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire) with the formerly independent Kingdom of Serbia and Kingdom of Montenegro. The Serbian royal House of Karađorđević became the Yugoslav royal dynasty. Yugoslavia gained international recognition on 13 July 1922 at the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris.[3] The country was named after the South Slavic peoples and constituted their first union, following centuries in which the territories had been part of the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary.
Renamed Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929, it was invaded by the Axis powers on 6 April 1941. In 1943, a Democratic Federal Yugoslavia was proclaimed by the Partisan resistance. In 1944, the king recognised it as the legitimate government, but in November 1945 the monarchy was abolished. Yugoslavia was renamed the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia in 1946, when a communist government was established. It acquired the territories of Istria, Rijeka, and Zadar from Italy. Leader of the Partisans Josip Broz Tito ruled the country as the president until his death in 1980. In 1963, the country was renamed again to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).
The constituent six Socialist Republics and two Socialist Autonomous Provinces that made up the country were SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, SR Croatia, SR Macedonia, SR Montenegro, SR Slovenia, and SR Serbia (including the autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo, which after 1974 were largely equal to the other members of the federation).[4][5] After an economic and political crisis in the 1980s and the rise of nationalism, Yugoslavia broke up along its republics' borders, at first into five countries, leading to the Yugoslav Wars.
After the breakup, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro formed a reduced federation, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), which aspired to the status of sole legal successor to the SFRY, but those claims were opposed by the other former republics. Eventually, Serbia and Montenegro accepted the opinion of the Badinter Arbitration Committee about shared succession.[6] Serbia and Montenegro themselves broke up in 2006 and became independent states, while Kosovo proclaimed independence in 2008.

After visiting Liberland (the new micro state between Serbia and Croatia), Serbian police pull over our car and accuse us of speeding.
Without any evidence of speeding, they demand 2500 Dinars in cash or 50 euros outright (a huge increased amount, obviously a bribe). Upon offering 2500 Dinars, the officer then asks for 3500 instead, a clear attempt at extracting a bribe in order to release my passport and car documents.
They demand us to drive to the post office ATM and withdraw more cash to give them.
By refusing to pay and refusing to sign documents written completely in Serbian, the officers who only speak Serbian try every method of extraction, eventually calling their chief over (who actually speaks English very well and was watching the entire situation). She threatened they would keep my passport for 5 days and not allow me to leave the country.
Eventually we drove to the nearest exchange, got the full amount and paid the officers in order to get back on the road.
We were pulled over for the total time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Near Subotica, Serbia (8 kilometers from the Hungarian border)
In the course of being stopped, we witnessed at least 5 other vehicles getting stopped by the police -- all with foreign plates.
Let this be a warning to any foreigner attempting to drive through Serbia. Know your rights and refuse to sign documents you can't read. And don't give them your passport.

Serbian Toronto Television is produced by Milan Cobanov and Miljana Ristic on a weekly basis and broadcast across Canada by OMNI Television.
In this episode we are at the Toronto premiere of Weight of Chains 2 by Boris Malagurski, a Serbian-Canadian film director, producer, writer, television host and activist
Boris Malagurski attended the University of British Columbia and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production. Malagurski made a documentary film about his move from Serbia called The Canada Project. In 2009, Malagurski released Kosovo: Can You Imagine?, a documentary film about the plight of Serb communities living in Kosovo at that time. In 2010, he released The Weight of Chains, his documentary film analyzing the role that the United States, NATO and the European Union allegedly played in the breakup of Yugoslavia. Boris Malagurski also made a documentary film about Belgrade, the capital of Serbia which had its world premiere in 2013 at St. Sava Centre in Belgrade. This is a documentary film about the spirit of Belgrade, its people and the historical circumstances that shaped Serbia’s capital throughout its existence. As a land from which positive news rarely appears in Western media, Serbia has a valuable gem which is yearning to be discovered, waiting for world recognition for its charm and beauty. In 2014, Malagurski released The Weight of Chains 2 as a part of the Serbian Film Festival at Montecasino in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since January 2013, Malagurski has been the host of "Revolution", a weekly TV show on Happy TV.
