STORYLINE:
Pope John Paul II, the Polish pontiff who led the Roman Catholic Church for more than a quarter century and became history's most-traveled pope, has died at 84, the Vatican announced on Saturday.
President George W. Bush led the United States in mourning the pope Saturday, saying "a good and faithful servant of God has been called home."
"The world has lost a champion of peace and freedom," the president said in a brief televised statement from the White House.
The pope personally met several incumbents of the White House, starting with Jimmy Carter in 1980, through Ronald Reagan, George Bush Senior, Bill Clinton and the current president.
Despite George W. Bush being in charge of the world's only super power, Pope John Paul II was not afraid of admonishing the planet's most powerful man, most recently over the war in Iraq.

KENYA: NAIROBI: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISIT
English/Nat
The Pope continued his whistle-stop tour of Africa when he arrived in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Monday.
Kenya is the last stop on the Pope's six-day, three-nation visit to Africa.
He has emphasised a sense of hope for the continent, especially if the West stops selling it weapons and frees it from oppressive foreign debt.
President Daniel Arap Moi and a number of high-ranking government officials were among the several thousand people on hand to greet the Pope at Nairobi's international airport.
The country's Catholic community waited patiently for a view of their leader.
Shortly after his arrival, the pontiff called on Africans to promote development which is not only economic and material but which would also create a civilisation of respect for all members of the society.
President Moi welcomed the Pope to Kenya in a brief speech.
Pope John Paul II brought a message of hope to Kenya, along with a caution against the evils of "ethnic, political and social divisions" affecting the nation.
He told a welcoming airport crowd that Africans should strive for development that provides not only prosperity, but respect for human rights.
He said that Africa is at a crossroads, with all Its peoples needing to work together in its development.
The head of the Roman Catholic Church rode in a bullet-proof Mercedes Benz from the airport to the city centre and later held talks with President Moi at State House.
In this, his third visit to Kenya in 15 years, the Pope arrived in a country where his church and the government have been increasingly at odds over human rights, corruption and political reform.
However, not all Kenyans welcomed the Pope's visit.
The Muslim community boycotted the welcome ceremony, claiming that his presence in predominately Muslim Africa was not welcome.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The Pope has a hidden agenda. But he would like to Christianise the continent which has been resided by Muslims - the majority of Muslims. And this hidden agenda has made Muslims to feel Pope has something to do with his visit in Africa."
SUPERCAPTION: Imam Sheik Ali Shee, Imam of Jamia Mosque, Nairobi.
The Pope's talks with President Moi were expected to touch on the delicate matter of the involvement of the church in politics.
In a pastoral letter last year, Kenya's bishops said the country was sliding into totalitarianism, with a clique of politicians manipulating the system for personal gain.
In April, the bishops issued another pastoral letter urging President Moi to change the present constitution because it fostered injustice, lawlessness and corruption.
The government dismissed the claims and one cabinet minister threatened the bishops with arrest if they continued with their criticisms.
The pontiff has been building on the theme that Africa, despite its unique history, customs and traditions, is an integral part of the worldwide church.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Fidel Castro, Cuban President
"Today, Holy Father, genocide is attempted again when by hunger, illness and total economic suffocation some try to subdue this people that refuses to accept the dictates and the rule of the mightiest economic, political and military power in history; much more powerful than the old Rome that for centuries had the beasts devour those who refused to abdicate their faith. Like those Christians horribly slandered to justify their crimes, we who are as slandered as they were, we choose a thousand times death rather than abdicate our convictions."
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Pope John Paul II
"May Cuba, with all its magnificent potential, open itself up to the world, and may the world open itself up to Cuba."
USA: Interview With Fidel Castro's Sister Juanita
71050
APTV
Miami, Florida, USA - 21 January 1998
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Juanita Castro, Fidel Castro's sister
"It was my brother who I saw. But the reality is that my brother is Cuba's dictator - I suppose because of his position, because of his behaviour, because of the way he has managed the country during the last 38, 39 years. However, I have never stopped thinking of him as my brother, not as a political leader."
SOUNDBITE: ((Spanish) Juanita Castro, Fidel Castro's sister
"It is very difficult to tell you what Fidel is capable of doing now, at this time, when the situation in the country reflects the peoples unhappiness. Who knows? Hopefully the Pope is able to get from him many things. Among them the liberation of many political prisoners. That would be great. At least it would be one of the important steps that could come out of this. I hope the Pope is able to achieve it."
