Since August 2002, he has been classified as a "person supporting terrorism" by the United States. The European Union's second highest court ruled to delist him as a "person supporting terrorism" and reversed a decision by member governments to freeze assets.
Jose Maria Sison was born at Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on February 8, 1939. Also a member of a prominent family with the connections to other prominent personalities like the Crisologos, Sison affirmed his background as a member of a landowning family. But during his childhood days, his inclination to the left began by listening to his barber discussing him about the Hukblahap in Ilocos (kwentong barbero), as well as studying in a public school in Ilocos (unlike his relatives) before entering Ateneo de Manila, then in Colegio de San Juan de Letran. A 1959 graduate of the University of the Philippines, Sison studied in Indonesia, before returning to the Philippines to settle as a university professor of literature. Sison also joined the Lavaite Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas as well as one of the founding members of the Socialist Party and Movement for the Advancement of Nationalism. And in 1964, he co-founded the Kabataang Makabayan or Patriotic Youth with Nilo S. Tayag. This organization rallied Filipino youth against the Vietnam war, against the Marcos presidency and corrupt politicians alongside Imperialism, Bureaucrat Capitalism and Feudalism. The organization also spearheaded the studying of Maoism as part of the struggle.

INTERVIEW WITH PROF. JOSE MARIA SISON
ON CUBA AND THE PHILIPPINES AND THEIR PEOPLES
By Julia Camagong
Special Representative to Latin America
International League of Peoples' Struggle
As special representative of the International League of Peoples' Struggle, I wish to interview you both as the Chairperson of the ILPS International Coordinating Committee and as the outstanding leader of the Philippine national liberation movement, no less than the founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed.
1. The Philippines and Cuba belong to two different continents and are thousands of miles from each other. But there is a certain closeness between the Cuban and Filipino peoples. How do you describe it?
JMS: There is a strong sense of solidarity and empathy between the Filipino and Cuban peoples because they have suffered under Spanish colonialism and US imperialism and struggled against these two foreign powers. They admire each other's revolutionary struggles and victories. The Filipino people are inspired by the great victory of the Cuban people in liberating themselves from US imperialism and local reactionary classes of big compradors and landlords represented by the Batista regime.
I presume that there are a considerable number of Cubans with Filipino ancestry because many Filipinos were brought in to work in the tobacco industry, the “tabacaleros”. There were so many Filipinos that the Pinar del Rio Province in Cuba was formerly called "Nueva
Filipinas" in the 18th and 19th century. The Cubans called them "Chinos de Manila".
Currently, the closeness of the Filipino and Cuban peoples is manifested by the Philippine-Cuban Friendship in the Philippines. From year to year, there are solidarity activities in the Philippines and cultural exchanges between Cuba and the Philippines. Since the struggle of the Filipino people against Marcos fascist dictatorship intensified in the first half of the 1980s, the Cuban embassy has shown sympathy and support for BAYAN and other organizations in the national democratic movement of the people.
2. It can be said that the historical experiences and destinies of the Cubans and Filipinos are intertwined. Can you explain further?
Spanish colonialism imposed on the Philippines and Cuba similar patterns of theocratic rule, feudal economy and medieval culture. It used the encomienda system, slavery and forced labor and feudal tributes to lay the foundation of feudalism in both countries. Both
the Cuban and the Filipino people were able to liberate themselves from Spanish colonial rule.
But the US intervened. As a rising modern imperialist power, the US defeated Spanish colonialism in the American-Spanish war of 1898 and grabbed Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines to impose US colonial rule under the Paris Treaty of December 1898. Since then the Filipino and Cuban peoples have been bound by a common desire to fight and defeat US imperialism and its puppets. The Filipino people can learn a lot from the Cuban people in liberating themselves from US domination and maintaining their national independence and social system.

Armed Forces spokesman Col. Restituto Padilla stressed that soldiers would remain non-partisan and would not participate in any political activity except to vote.
“The news or the statement that Joma Sison may have given his support to Mayor Duterte is a non-issue to the Armed Forces because we have come to know the mayor as having the ability to work with all sectors of society, whether they be in the center, the left or the right,” Padilla said.
“The Armed Forces of the Philippines remains apolitical when it comes to the election,” he added.
Padilla said Duterte’s ability to work with different sectors is “a political skill” that the mayor has developed over the years to serve his constituents.
Duterte’s name is being floated as one of the possible presidential candidates in 2016 but he has not confirmed whether he is seeking a higher post.
The mayor ranked third behind Sen. Grace Poe and Vice President Jejomar Binay in the latest Pulse Asia survey on possible presidential candidates. He was in fourth place behind Poe, Binay and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II in a similar Social Weather Stations survey released last June.
Earlier, state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) quoted Duterte as saying that Sison has endorsed him for the 2016 polls.

Earlier, state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) quoted Duterte as saying that Sison has endorsed him for the 2016 polls.
The mayor reportedly disclosed the information during a “Run Duterte Run” caravan at the San Pedro Square in Davao City.
According to the PNA report, Duterte shared a video message by Sison wherein the communist leader described the mayor as a man with “integrity, strength of character and political will for good.”
Duterte, however, did not declare his candidacy during the event, saying he would consult his family first before making the decision.
The report about Sison’s endorsement came as the military is struggling to end the decades-old communist insurgency, which has about 4,000 armed supporters nationwide.
When asked if the military is comfortable with the possibility that rebels would endorse candidates, Padilla noted the insurgents had backed politicians during previous elections. – With Perseus Echeminada

I am a teacher by profession who loves the exchange of ideas towards common understanding and practical cooperation."
9. Close-up Sison's hand written statement
STORYLINE:
Philippine communist leader Jose Maria Sison was freed from jail on Thursday after a Dutch court found insufficient evidence to hold him on murder charges.
Sison had been arrested on 28 August in Utrecht, where he has lived in self-imposed exile for two decades, for allegedly ordering two rivals killed in Manila.
He was met by his wife and a small group of supporters after his release from Scheveningen prison outside The Hague, where he had been held much of the time in isolation.
"You cannot imagine how happy I am," he said of his release at the start of a prepared statement.
"I am innocent of the false and politically motivated charge levelled against me," he said. "I have nothing to do with any murder."
Judges said it was clear the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) was responsible for the slayings, and that the decision to kill the two men was taken "within the party structure."
But there was too little evidence to link Sison directly, the ruling said.
In a summary of their ruling, judges at the Hague District Court said there were many indications in the files which supported claims that Sison is still playing a "leading role" in the Central Committee of the CPP as well as in the military branch of the CPP.
But they said the evidence was insufficient to show that Sison committed the offences he is charged with while living in the Netherlands, in deliberate and close co-operation with the perpetrators in the Philippines.

It's a peaceful protest, an action to express our grievances against the Dutch and Philippine governments against the sabotage of the peace process here in the Philippines."
8. Wide shot of demonstrators marching, shouting "release Joma Sison"
STORYLINE:
Philippine police used truncheons and shields to beat back some 100 left-wing activists who tried to march to the Dutch Embassy in Manila on Thursday to protest the arrest of a communist leader in the Netherlands.
Rally organisers said their affiliates in the United States, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Europe launched similar protests against the arrest of Jose Maria Sison.
They also called for a boycott of Dutch products until Sison is released from jail.
"We were supposed to be holding a peaceful protest in front of the Dutch Embassy to call on the Dutch government to release Jose Maria Sison," Renato Reyes, the protest leader in Manila said.
It's a peaceful protest, an action to express our grievances against the Dutch and Philippine governments against the sabotage of the peace process here in the Philippines," he added.
Sison, the founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People's Army, was detained by Dutch police on Tuesday for allegedly ordering the murders of two former allies in Manila.
The Philippines has braced for fallout from the arrest with the military going on red alert as Sison's supporters vowed to intensify their insurgency.
Leftist groups worried about a possible crackdown and all-out war.

-------------------------------------------------
Mensagem do Professor Jose Maria Sison,

For the third straight year, activists led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan held a year-end forum with International League of Peoples' Struggles (ILPS) chairperson Prof. Jose Maria Sison as resource person via webstreaming. This year's forum was held at Tanghalang PUP (Polytechinic University of the Philippines) in Sta. Mesa, Manila last December 13.
The forum followed a special screening of the biofilm "A Guerilla is Like a Poet" based on Sison's life up to the time he was released from prison after nine years of imprisonment by the Marcos dictatorship.
In this short video clip, Prof. Sison shares his thoughts on Vice President Jejomar Binay's ratings slide on one hand and Senator Grace Poe's surging popularity on the other.

Jose Maria Sison and Julie De Lima. He is the son of a rich family. She is the daughter of schoolteachers. They fell in love with each other in University of Philippines. They then fought together for revolution, were arrested and imprisoned by Marcos, and led the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People's Army, which is still active in the Philippines today.
Re: Julie's Books: I asked Julie to relate the books which most impressed her as a child. Her reply:

The military yesterday described as a ''non-issue'' the reported endorsement of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte by Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison.

AUGUST 7, 2015
Panayam ng Kodao Productions sa pamamagitan ni Prof. Sarah Raymundo ng CONTEND-UP kay Prof. Jose Maria Sison, Tagapagnulo ng International League of People's Struggle (ILPS) hinggil sa peace talks, presidential elections at Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
On 2016 Presidential Elections

(Question: How do you feel?)
"Well, I am relieved. I was in solitary confinement for more than two weeks."
(Question: Because of what?)
"Because of the silly, false and politically motivated charge that started in Manila and which the Dutch police picked up. But that is no basis."
(Question: What do you think about the accusations?)
"The accusation is false, as I told the examining judges, the charges is entirely out of my character it is against my moral and political principles to have anything to do with any kind of murder. And besides, it is silly because in the Philippines the killing of the two persons in (inaudible) and Tabara, they were specifications, the incidents concerning them were specifications, in this foolish charge of rebellion against myself and fifty other people including progressive members of Congress, anti-Arroyo (Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) military officers..."
(Question: What are you going to do now?)
"I would like to sit down somewhere I have a prepared statement."

8. SOUNDBITE (English): Jose Maria Sison, Philippine communist leader:
"I am deeply pleased and thankful the (inaudible) has decided to release me from detention, you cannot imagine how happy I am. It is extremely painful and humiliating to be subjected to solitary confinement and tough interrogations under over-heated lamps. The ordeal is acute because I am innocent of the false and politically motivated charge levelled against me. I have nothing to do with any murder, especially if it something concocted by the Arroyo regime, this is against my moral and political principles.
