Imelda R. Marcos (born Imelda Remedios Visitasion Romualdez on July 2, 1929) is a Filipino politician and widow of 10thPhilippinePresidentFerdinand Marcos. Upon the ascension of her husband to political power, she held various positions to the government until 1986. She is the first politician elected as member of the Philippine legislature in three geographical locations (Manila, Leyte, Ilocos Norte). In 2010, she was elected to become a member of the House of Representatives to represent Ilocos Norte's second district. She is sometimes referred to as the Steel Butterfly or the Iron Butterfly. She is often remembered for symbols of the extravagance of her husband's political reign, including her collection of 2,700 pairs of shoes.
Her paternal ancestors, the Lopezes of Leyte, were wealthy, landed and prominent, and claimed to have founded the town of Tolosa, Leyte. Spanish mestizos, the Lopezes were descended from the Spanish friar and silversmith Don Francisco Lopez, originally from Granada in the Andalusian region of Spain. Together with Fray Salustiano Buz, he arrived by way of Acapulco to build Roman Catholic missions in the island provinces of Samar and Leyte (Buz would establish his home base in Palapag, Samar, the exit-entry point of the Manila Galleons in the Visayas islands). It was common then for Spanish friars to take mistresses, and Lopez's life-long relationship with a Chinese mestiza, Maria Crisostomo y Talentin of Basey, Samar, produced seven children. The eldest of them was Trinidad Lopez, or Doña Tidad in later years.

"Never dress down for the poor. They won't respect you for it. They want their First Lady to look like a million dollars."
"Life is not a matter of place, things or comfort; rather, it concerns the basic human rights of family, country, justice and human dignity."
"I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes, I had one thousand and sixty."
"People say I'm extravagant because I want to be surrounded by beauty. But tell me, who wants to be surrounded by garbage?"
"If you know how rich you are, you are not rich. But me, I am not aware of the extent of my wealth. That's how rich we are."
"I have never been a material girl. My father always told me never to love anything that cannot love you back."
"Win or lose, we go shopping after the election."
"Doesn't the fight for survival also justify swindle and theft? In self defence, anything goes."
"I think that's a very kinky issue with the panties and bras. That's the thing that they will display: shoes, panties and bras."
"I am beyond logic and rationality."
"I always say you can never be extravagant with beauty. Beauty is God made real. Beauty is life."
"The problems with First Ladies is that you have to set the standard. My role is to be both star and slave."
"Ferdinand was a gold trader. He was a lawyer for mining companies. When he entered politics in l949, he had tons and tons of gold. When Bill Gates was a college dropout, Ferdinand already possessed billions of dollars and tons of gold. It wasn't stolen."
"I have a different way of thinking. I think synergistically. I'm not linear in thinking, I'm not very logical."
"You know, not even your British Queen is called just Elizabeth - she's Elizabeth the Second. There's only one Imelda."
"The Philippines is a terrible name, coming from Spain. Phillip II was the father of the inquisition, who I believe died of syphilis. It is my great regret that we didn't change the name of our country."
"My dreams have become puny with the reality my life has become."
"I will come up with a project that will wipe out poverty in the Philippines in two years. I want to remove the people from economic crisis by using the Marcos wealth. Long after I'm gone, people will remember me for building them homes and roads and hospitals and giving them food."
"The Marcos era was the golden time for the Philippines. We had the lowest crime rate in the world in Manila and real development then. At last, people are starting to understand this."
"The Reagans were dear friends for many years, even when he was governor of California. Nancy appreciated a lot of Philippine-made things."

Imelda Marcos - Coronation of Mohammad Rezā Shāh Pahlavi of Iran
Tagalog/Eng/Nat
Philippine senators have grilled the widow of dictator Ferdinand Marcos on her claims that her husband owned much of the Philippines,
In a hearing broadcast on nationwide television, she dodged most of the questions, invoking privilege.
The government has put claims on about 570 (m) million U-S dollars in Swiss deposits, now held in an account in a Philippine bank.
The Swiss accounts are also being claimed by nine thousand five hundred Filipinos who won a class action suit for human rights violations against the Marcos estate and were awarded 2 (b) billion U-S dollars in damages.
Draped in pearls and gold jewellery, the sixty-nine year-old who became famous for her massive shoe collection said her husband was not a thief instead that he had amassed his fortune through gold trading.
The senate hearing was broadcast live by a cable television company, allowing many Filipinos to see for the first time Mrs. Marcos being questioned about her family's wealth.
Marcos and her lawyers are reportedly planning to sue to recover at least 500 billion pesos (12.65 (b) billion U-S dollars) in equity in more than 100 top Philippine corporations allegedly entrusted by Marcos to his associates, who now refuse to return them to Marcos' heirs.
In the hearing, Marcos said she agreed to appear in the senate to seek the lawmakers' help in recovering her husband's assets.
She suggested the late president had wanted these turned over to the government for the benefit of all Filipinos.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"But the most urgent reason I was looking forward to coming to this hearing of the Philippines Senate is to seek your help, honourable Senators, to help me implement the last will and testament of the late President Marcos, to enlist assets in the hands of trustees, to implement the Marcos Humanitarian Foundation, so that we can help the country in our economic crisis and help the Filipino people in their agony and suffering"
SUPER CAPTION: Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines
One of the country's leading newspapers early this month ran a series of articles in which Marcos was quoted as having said her family owns much of the Philippines.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel, a former southern Philippine city mayor jailed by Marcos, asked whether it was true that she had given the interview.
She denied giving interviews and refused to identify the corporations and assets or the trustees used by her husband as fronts.
Senator Pimentel said that among the names she mentioned in the interview was the name of Lucie Otan.
But Imelda Marcos remained tight lipped.
SOUNDBITE:
"Again I would like to revoke my right to remain silent"
Question: We are only interested what is the first name of this David that you mentioned?
"I think I better obey the orders of my council to invoke my right to remain silent, because of the many cases that I have in Sandigen Buyen (unclear) and elsewhere.
Question: What about Eduardo Cuanco?
The same right, your honour"
SUPER CAPTION: Imelda Marcos, former First lady of the Philippines
Marcos was ousted in a popular revolt in 1986 and died in exile in Hawaii three years later.
He had denied any wrongdoing.
The government has accused the Marcoses of illegally enriching themselves during his 20-year rule.
Marcos said she was aware of her husband's huge wealth.
SOUNDBITE: (English)

She may now be best known for her outrageous shoe collection but in 1983, Imelda Marcos was also a member of her husband Ferdinand Marcos’ cabinet and was poised to replaced him as President. She avoids talking any political aspirations and instead tells Bob McKeown that her role as First Lady is more to be a soldier for duty and love, modelling an ideal husband wife relationship to her public. Marcos and her husband were exiled in 1986 but after her husband’s death, Marcos was permitted to return. She is now a member of the house of representatives.

"I knew that he was pretty rich. That was why I was telling him why are you in politics with all this wealth that you have. Early on - almost on day one - I knew he had more money than people thought...than I expected he had"
