"We thought we were going to attend a UN meeting and we witnessed a racist hate fest instead". Anti-Semitic slogans, flyers praising Hitler to come back from the dead, fundamentalist propaganda... These are images that have haunted many NGOs since the 2001 Durban Conference in South Africa. It all happened a week before 9/11... As the United States waged war against terrorism and deserted UN regulations, Asian and African states took hold of the majority in the new Human Rights Council created in 2006. For the first time, a documentary says what is going on in Geneva’s UN premises. It is explaining what became of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights. What we discover there seems very far from the miraculous consensus orchestrated by Eleanor Roosevelt 60 years ago. Nowadays, the Council hosts a direct confrontation between two visions of the world. Dictatorships and authoritarian states give lessons to the few democracies present in the Assembly. As Robert Badinter - the father of death penalty’s abolition in France - puts it: "the question of human rights once more became an ideological battlefield". Words become crushing weapons in this new Assembly. Should we forbid the defamation of religions in order to combat racism at an international level? Or does it constitute a regression when it hides discriminations made in the name of religion in certain countries? Democracynow.org - Tension is continuing to mount in Israel over a string of recent Palestinian stabbing attacks and an intense crackdown by the Israeli government. Since October 1, at least 58 Palestinians have been shot and killed by Israelis at the scene of attacks or during protests in the West Bank and Gaza. Israeli police say 10 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian stabbings or shootings. Meanwhile, video has gone viral of a masked Israeli settler armed with a knife attacking Rabbi Arik Ascherman, the co-founder of the group Rabbis for Human Rights. The incident took place after Ascherman tried to film Israeli settlers setting Palestinian olive trees on fire in the West Bank village of Awarta outside of Nablus. The video shows the masked man grabbing a knife out of his back pocket, then repeatedly lunging at the 55-year-old rabbi, who was attempting to retreat. The masked man also kicked and punched Ascherman while making threatening gestures with the knife. The settler eventually ran away. We speak with Rabbi Arik Ascherman, who co-founded Rabbis for Human Rights in 1988. For over a decade the group has dispatched volunteers to protect the Palestinian olive harvest.

The Human Rights Act enshrines rights British people fought for centuries, and now the Tories have pledged to scrap it. The politicians are trying to take your rights away, and much of the media have been cheering them on and spreading myths and lies. So here I take on some of the most common myths surrounding the Human Rights Act and explain why it's so important - and why we all need us to stand up and protect it.

"There will be a court case about his prison conditions. We are arguing that his prison conditions are a breach of human rights. He has been held in isolation for four years," his lawyer, Oeystein Storrvik, told Reuters.
Breivik previously threatened to “go on hunger strike until death” if his conditions were not improved, but Storrvik said his client was now “focusing on the legal case.”
Breivik was sentenced to 21 years behind bars – the maximum term under Norwegian law, which can be selectively extended – for killing 8 people with a car bomb and gunning down 69 more at a left-wing party-run summer camp. Since then, the 36-year-old has waged a near-constant battle against the authorities to improve his conditions.
Branding himself a “human rights activist,” last year Breivik produced a list of 12 demands, and distributed them among the media. Among them was the replacement of his Playstation 2 with a newer model, access to more adult computer games, a more comfortable sofa, a PC rather than a typewriter for word processing, and a doubling of his allowance for “exemplary behavior”.
The current conflict began when Breivik reported “an escalation” of his maltreatment at the beginning of September. The mass murderer complained that he was moved to a smaller compartment, only allowed to leave his cell for one hour a day and received less contact with prison officials.
Breivik said the deprivations forced him to suspend his correspondence studies for a politics degree at the prestigious University of Oslo, where he enrolled earlier this year.
While Breivik is currently thought to be held at Skien prison south of Oslo, officials at his previous place of detention, Ila, claimed he was kept in solitary to prevent him from taking other inmates hostage.

But there is one bright spot for the Middle Eastern kingdom -- the same week that the international community was in an uproar over the plight of the young dissident, a watchdog group drew attention to the fact that Saudi Arabia had been selected to oversee an influential U.N. panel on human rights. That panel "selects top officials who shape international human rights standards and report on violations worldwide," said UN Watch, the watchdog group based in Geneva.
Saudi Arabia had earlier this year sought the leadership slot of the entire Human Rights Council of the U.N., a move that drew criticism given the country's human rights record. The kingdom routinely comes in at the bottom of Freedom House's rankings of world freedom.
"Saudi Arabia has arguably the worst record in the world when it comes to religious freedom and women’s rights," UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer said in a statement. "This UN appointment is like making a pyromaniac into the town fire chief, and underscores the credibility deficit of a human rights council that already counts Russia, Cuba, China, Qatar and Venezuela among its elected members."
Some observers have questioned why Saudi Arabia has a seat at the 47-member Human Rights Council at all. But many countries on the council have enacted laws that are at odds with the U.N.'s official stances. To take one obvious example, the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights advocates against capital punishment, saying that "the death penalty has no place in the 21st century."
But a number of countries on the council, including the U.S., actively sentence people to death and execute them each year. In 2014, council member countries executed at least 139 prisoners, contrary to the commissioner's stated position. That doesn't include executions by China, which also sits on the council and where experts agree that annual execution numbers run into the thousands. Exact numbers on capital punishment in China are hard to come by, as official sources are generally seen to be unreliable.
Asked about the appropriateness of Saudi Arabia heading a key human rights panel last week, a U.S. State Department official said "we would welcome it."
Correction: This piece has been corrected to clarify that the Saudi blogger was sentenced to 1,000 lashes, but only 50 have been delivered so far.

Organ: Economic and Social Council Committees and Specialized Agencies

Under-Secretary-General: Sarah Baer
Topic A: Caravan of Death (Pinochet's Chile)
Topic A Summary:
In 1973 the Chilean Armed Forces, under the leadership of General Augustus Pinochet led a coup to overthrow the current democratic government led by Salvador Allende. Pinochet set up a military government to replace him. He then started a raid, leading high ranking military officers to torture and kill supporters of president Allende. Pinochet set up the "Caravan of Death" which sent helicopters to military bases around the country to "eliminate" opponents of the military regime. The "Caravan of Death" killed and tortured at least 97 people. Pinochet's merciless regime didn't stop there and by the end of his time leading the country, thousands of people had been killed or had disappeared.
Topic B: Khmer Rouge
Topic B Summary:
The Khmer Rouge is a radical communist group that waged civil war on the Cambodian government for five years until seizing power in 1975. Their goal is to return Cambodia to its preindustrial agrarian roots by evacuating cities and forcing citizens into brutal farm labor. Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge, has ordered the purge of countless wealthy Cambodians, intellectuals, and political dissidents. Countless other Cambodians have died due to malnutrition as a result of Pol Pot's failed agricultural plan. President Carter of the United States has accurately named the Khmer Rouge the "worst violator of human rights in the world."

Syrian government troops, with Russian air support, have made fresh gains against terrorists near the northern city of Aleppo.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the army has recaptured three villages from militant groups, including al-Qaeda offshoot Nusra Front. According to the London-based monitoring group, 17 militants and seven Syrian troops were killed in the fighting. Meanwhile, Russian warplanes have carried out nearly 50 airstrikes against terrorist positions in Syria. The Syrian army has launched an offensive against a range of terrorist groups which are fighting to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad. They've managed to regain some territory from the terrorist groups.

Human rights groups in the coast region want the government to reduce the number of recruiting agencies luring youths to go and work in Middle East countries saying they are engaging in human trafficking.
Muslim for Human Rights group (MUHURI) and Commission for Human Rights and Justice have urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to personally deal with the plight of Kenyans working in Middle East countries.
The two groups said every region should have a maximum of 10 recruiting agencies for easier management.
The lobby groups said more than 30 recruiting agencies in coast region are still recruiting Kenyan youths to go and work as domestic workers yet the ban is still on.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Human rights actually save lives, reduce suffering, and empower individuals and communities. Often we tend to justify the importance of human rights through moral, political and legal arguments, but perhaps we need to highlight hard evidence more.
Do Human Rights work? If Human Rights work, how do we know that they work?
Professor Paul Hunt specialises in international and domestic human rights law. He has lived, and undertaken human rights work, in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific. In 1998, he was nominated by the Government of New Zealand and elected by the United Nations to serve as an independent expert on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1999-2002). Between 2002-2008, he served as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health and, in 2008, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Nordic School of Public Health. He is a member of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex and Adjunct Professor at Waikato University, New Zealand.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

October 26, 2009 | Can there be agreement about universal human rights? Given the diversity of religious and philosophical value traditions in today's world, is consensus possible? In his third Berkley Center lecture, Hans Joas argued that much depends on the way we talk about values with one another. We have to resist the notion that human rights controversies inevitably link to a "clash of civilizations," or that individuals and groups simply embrace and articulate the values that are right for them without reasoning or communication with others. The example of the drafting of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights illustrates the importance and possibility of productive communication about universal human rights across value traditions.
