Greek presence in Italy begins with the migrations of the old Greek Diaspora in the 8th century BC, continuing down to the present time. There is a linguistic minority known as the Griko people, who live in the Southern Italian regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia, especially the peninsula of Salento, within the old Magna Graecia region, who speak a distinctive dialect of Greek called Griko. They are believed to be remnants of the ancient and medieval Greek communities, who have lived in the south of Italy for centuries. Alongside this group, a smaller number of more recent migrants from Greece lives in Italy, forming an expatriate community in the country. Today many Greeks in Southern Italy follow Italian customs and culture.
In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crisis (famine, overcrowding, climate change, etc.), the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began a large colonization drive, including southern Italy.
In this same time, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea and Massalia (Marseille). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of the boot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, "Greater Greece"), since it was so densely inhabited by Greeks. The ancient geographers differed on whether the term included Sicily or merely Apulia and Calabria — Strabo being the most prominent advocate of the wider definitions.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko touched down in Milan Thursday as one of the 47 heads of state to take part in the 10th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
On arrival, the Ukrainian leader shook hands with Italian officials meeting with supporters from the Ukrainian diaspora in front of the Arco della Pace.
Ukraine is one of the hot topics expected to be discussed on the sidelines of the event. For the first time in several months, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, and Poroshenko are due to talk face-to-face about the conflict.

St Benedict of Palermo (1526-1589) Benedict the Moor was an Italian Franciscan friar in Sicily who is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Lutheran churches. Born of African slaves, he was freed at birth and became known for his charity. Benedict was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV in 1743 and canonised in 1807 by Pope Pius VII. Benedict is remembered for his patience and understanding when confronted with racial prejudice and taunts. Original sculpture attributed to José Montes de Oca. Angelo Soliman (1721-1796) Angelo Soliman was born in the Sokoto State in modern Nigeria. He was taken captive as a child and arrived in Marseilles as a slave. He was given as a gift in 1734 to the imperial governor of Sicily. After the death of Prince Lobkowitz, Soliman was taken into the Vienna household of the Prince of Liechtenstein, eventually rising to chief servant and royal tutor of the heir to the prince, Aloys I. Original Portrait by Gottfried Haid based on an artwork by Johann Nepomuk Steiner. Ayuba Suleiman Diallo (1701-1773) Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, also known as Job ben Solomon, was a famous Muslim who was a victim of the Atlantic slave trade. He was born in Bundu, in modern-day Senegal, and his memoirs were published as one of the earliest slave narratives – that is, a first-person account of the slave trade. He was enslaved for about two years in Maryland; he was then brought to England, set free, and sent to his native land in 1734. Original painting by William Hoare. Albert Badin (1747 or 1750-1822) Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert Badin, né Couchi, known as Badin, was a Swedish court-servant and diarist, originally a slave, butler of first Queen Louisa Ulrika of Prussia and then Princess Sophia Albertine of Sweden. His original name was Couchi, but he was commonly known as Badin, which means mischief-maker or trickster. Original Painting by Gustaf Lundberg. Dom Nicolau (c1830-1860) Dom Nicolau, prince of Kongo, is perhaps the earliest African leader who wrote publicly to protest colonial influences. Nicolau protested against Portuguese commercial and political activity and military expansion by publishing a letter in a Portuguese newspaper in Lisbon. His exact birth date remains uncertain. Contemporary engravings of Nicolas during his visit in Lisbon in 1845 suggest that he was then perhaps 15 to 20 years old. Original engraving: Unknown Artist Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) Frederick Douglass was a social reform activist, writer, and statesman. He escaped from slavery, and later became a leader of the abolitionist movement, renowned for his impressive oratory and writing. His experiences as a slave have been narrated in several autobiographies which became bestsellers. He is also remembered for being the first African-American nominated for vice president of the United States. Original portrait by Samuel J. Miller. Don Miguel de Castro, Emissary of Congo Don Miguel de Castro and two servants arrived as part of a delegation sent by the ruler of Sonho, a province of Congo, via Brazil to the Netherlands. One objective of the journey was to find a resolution to an internal conflict in Congo. Original painting attributed to Jaspar Beck or Albert Eckout. A Moroccan man (1913) José Tapiró y Baró was a Catalan painter. One of his closest friends was painter Marià Fortuny, with whom he shared an interest for Orientalism. He was a master of watercolor painting. Original Painting by José Tapiro y Baro. August Sabac El Cher (c1836-1885) August Sabac el Cher was an early Afro-German who was given to Prince Albert of Prussia as a boy in 1843 when the prince was in Egypt. August grew to be embraced as a Prussian and married a white woman. The family history of the Sabac el Cher is also the story of a family of soldiers in three different German armies: under the Kaiser, Hitler and Chancellor Adenauer.Original portrait by: Unknown Artist. Pedro Camejo (1790-1821) Pedro Camejo was a Venezuelan soldier who fought with the rebel army during the Venezuelan war of independence, reaching the rank of lieutenant. He was nicknamed “El Negro Primero” because he was always at the forefront of every battle. He was also the only black officer in the army of Simon Bolívar. Ikhlas Khan Ikhlas Khan was an African-Indian who was a chief minister to the Sultanate of Bijapur during the 17th century. He remained in power until 1683. He then moved to Adoni in the Kurnool district, where he governed and built a notable mosque. Jean-Baptiste Belley (1746-1805) Jean-Baptiste Belley was a native of modern-day Senegal, born on the Island of Gorée. He was a former slave from Saint-Domingue in the French West Indies who bought his freedom with his savings. During the period of the French Revolution, he became a member of the National Convention and the Council of Five Hundred of France. He was also known as Mars. Original painting by Girodet. In honor of Black History Month, “Italics” looks at the role of the press – both radical and mainstream - in the assimilation of Italian immigrants to the dominant white culture from 1886 through 1920 and its relevance in thinking about racism in our society today, and amidst recent outpourings of the masses into the streets for #BlackLivesMatter. Scholar Peter Vellon (Queens College/CUNY) explores this in his new book, “A Great Conspiracy Against Our Race: Italian Immigrant Newspapers and the Construction of Whiteness in the Early 20th Century.“ “Italics” catches up with Mr. Vellon and Dr. Joseph Sciorra at the Calandra Institute. Professor Margherita talks of love, in it’s various forms, with February’s Italian words of the month. (Taped: 02/25/15)
Italics, Television for the Italian American Experience is a monthly presentation in the CUNY Presents timeslot, that features prominent Italian-Americans in the arts, business, government, sports, academia, and more. Each episode explores various aspects of the diaspora, Italian American history and traditions, contemporary Italian American life, and takes a projected look at the future of the Italian American community. Italics is now in its third decade serving the Italian-American community and those interested in Italian American history and culture.
Italics is hosted by Anthony Julian Tamburri, Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College/CUNY and Professor of Italian & Italian/American Studies, and correspondent Lucia Grillo.

http://www.euronews.com/ Comedian Beppe Grillo has shaken up Italian politics, with his 5 Star Movement party (Movimento 5 Stelle) winning local and administrative polls in the Italian city of Parma and several smaller towns. Euronews met him in Tuscany.
Beppe Grillo: "The media show pictures of me taken during my shows, when I of course I'm overacting. Because that's my job. I have to get the audience's attention. I can't whisper. Look at this frontpage. He looks serious and I look crazy. They put these examples of my facial expressions on a front page and then they write: "Would you let your country be controlled by someone like Grillo?" So everyone says: "Of course not!"
So how have the mainstream media and other political parties reacted to his political success? Is he serious?
Beppe Grillo: "They still don't know how to react to what is happening. It is not a political revolution, more like a cultural one. The real leader is the movement and the movement's programme rather than any physical person. People should start voting for a programme not a person."
But having having attacked professional politicians is Grillo's movement ready to shoulder social responsibilities and manage real cities?
Beppe Grillo: "Taking responsibility is a marvellous thing. We want to. But we are talking about citizens voting for other citizens who will enter local parliaments and the national government. Our country is almost economically ruined. We will take on responsibilities but we will also say: "We are not magicians, but let's see what we can do." I have toured all of Europe and met young people that have left Italy. There are millions of them. They are educated, with MBAs, and they say, "We cannot come home under these economic circumstances," but they are almost in tears as they speak. We should give these people a chance. If we start to bring people rather than parties into the national parliament, if we get elected specialists in energy, in transport, in waste, if we bring to the national parliament citizens that have a real and daily relationship with the community... then I bet our well educated young people will come back to Italy. After Romania we have the biggest diaspora in Europe. We export well educated people and import less educated workers."
The 5 Star Movement's manifesto is on line. Beppe Grillo is not alone with his ideas. Many other European political parties criticise European politics.
Beppe Grillo: "Our movement has filled a very dangerous vacuum. We are talking about Greek extremists, about Marine Le Pen's movement in France, about Hungarian far right movements. These kind of Fascist movements flourish in a sociopolitical vacuum. Think about the fact that Italy "invented" Fascism and we have exported it throughout the world. And today, in Italy, instead of having Fascism the vacuum is filled with citizens with no criminal records."
Is Europe dead? Is there any common political future for the continent or is the political end of the European Union nigh?
Beppe Grillo: "Europe was a marvelous dream invented by Jacques Delors and Willy Brandt but it has failed by trying to putting together economies which were very far away the one from another. This, and also a currency which shouldn't have been the same for all. Two currencies would have been better. Otherwise Angela Merkel and Germany could go back to the Deutsche mark and we will have a weaker euro used in South European countries like Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, even Ireland. We could form a "different" eurozone. Let's sit down and discuss this. We have nothing to lose. We have already lost 30% of our economy since joining the euro. Our economy is imploding because of the lack of confidence in the future. Firms are failing and the national debt grows instead of shrinking."
And what does Beppe Grillo think of ex Italian leader, Silvio Berlusconi?
Beppe Grillo: "Berlusconi seemed to be eternal. He left only a short time ago but he still seems like ancient history. He looks like an even older guy. He doesn't use make up any more. Berlusconi is just something which doesn't mean anything anymore. He achieved success thanks to his tv channels. Once his channels no longer had the monopoly, he fell beause he had built nothing during his public life."
But even the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano says that he's not impressed by Grillo.
Beppe Grillo: "When he talks about Grillo-ism, or about demagogues, he should be careful because a president should be neutral. We have now 250 local administrators elected by citizens. He was chosen by parties, he wasn't elected by individual citizens."

Over 60,000 migrants have landed in Italy over the past 12 months. Whilst they are being shunned by many, one small town in the backwaters of Southern Italy is welcoming them with open arms.
In the sleepy town of Riace, immigrants make up a quarter of the population. Mayor Domenico Lucano's believes that helping them will help save his town's future. Fatima Abaldi, an immigrant who works in one of the mayor's workshops explains: "I don't feel like a stranger or a foreigner, because these people are very kind and polite". The re-population of Riace is solving the problem of derelict housing, and many feel it gives the town a new lease of life. But in a village with little tourism, keeping business going is a struggle. "After one year, if you have no work, you're out. Where do you go?" asks refugee Mohamad Wazir. Despite the limitations of the scheme, the mayor remains full of hope: "They bring hope for a better life. That's the strongest incentive for me, the beauty of knowing new worlds."

On the 27th of June, 2014, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) established a Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Eritrea to investigate and officially document the alleged systematic violations of human rights in Eritrea. The COI will collect testimonies from victims, victim’s families, and witnesses in the Diaspora to document their suffering and to allow their stories to be heard in the hopes of obtaining justice for these victims, both alive and deceased. The COI has until June 2015 to collect this information and present its findings to the HRC at its 29th Session.
This video is an interview conducted by Human Rights Concern-Eritrea (HRCE) with Lemma Adhanom who in 1994 was conscripted into 1st round of the so called Eritrea National Service. He was later remobilized and fought in the bloody 1998-2000 border war between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
He reflects on the things he witnessed during the war and after; including extrajudicial execution, torture, arbitrary detention, inhumane treatments and wide spread rape of female conscripts by high ranking officers which continues til this day.
Lemma was imprisoned when he tried to air his opinion and eventually decided to flee Eritrea when his life was threatened.
This is his Story...

During her time in prison she describes inhumane treatments, filthy living conditions that beggars belief, witnessing torture, mothers locked with their children and absence of any rule of law or due process.
