Lively festivities are taking place across the world today in celebration of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos festival — or the Day of the Dead.

Celebrated at the beginning of November, the festival is dedicated to honouring family members and friends who have passed away.

It is a culmination of rituals originating from both Mexico's indigenous Aztec and Catholic background.

On the day, families traditionally visit the graves of their relatives, decorating the gravesites with colourful offerings including marigolds and candles.

Feasts are also held at the gravesites, with breads and sweets shared among visitors as they share stories and fond memories of the deceased.

While widely observed across Latin America, the festival has in recent years experienced a growing interest in Australia.

Here are some of the best photos from this year's celebration shared on social media.
