Land reform in Zimbabwe
Land reform in Zimbabwe officially began in 1979 with the signing of the Lancaster House Agreement, an effort to more equitably distribute land between black subsistence farmers and white Zimbabweans of European ancestry, who had traditionally enjoyed superior political and economic status. The government's land distribution is perhaps the most crucial and most bitterly contested political issue surrounding Zimbabwe. It can be divided into two periods: from 1979 to 2000, where a principle of willing buyer, willing seller was applied with economic help from Great Britain and secondly, beginning in 2000, the fast-track land reform program. Zimbabwe Land Reform - Professor Ian Scoones Dispels The Myths
Professor Ian Scoones of the University of Sussex has done the only actual research on the impact of land reform in Zimbabwe, in Masvingo Province, specifically. He has found that the elite capture of the land reform process is massively exaggerated - to discredit the very exercise, I would add. There are very powerful forces, especially through the multi-billion dollar diamond monopoly of the Oppenheimer Family, aligned against land redistribution in Africa. The 10 year villification campaign against Zimbabwe is evidence of it.

President Mugabe wanted to take back 1/3 of all Zimbabwe’s productive farmland from white farmers and give it to the country’s peasants. In 1998, a mere 4,500 wealthy whites owned a staggering 50% of Zimbabwe, and Mugabe says they had until August that year to give that land back.
As Europe sats down with African leaders in Cairo in March 1998, Zimbabwe's colonial hangover will be taking centre stage. Land was an issue throughout Zimbabwe’s rocky transition to Independence. But when it came, Mugabe was generous to the whites - allowing them to stay on. Indeed it was his anti-racism policies that won him favour. Now many feel he is trying to divert criticism about corruption in government by pushing through land reform that will see black farmers re-settled onto land seized by the British colonialists. The whites say it’s State-sanctioned robbery - but the government says that’s exactly what the white man did.
