Danish philosopher and author Søren Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813 in Copenhagen. He was the youngest child of seven, born to parents of Jutlandish descent. He sometimes called himself a child of old age because his mother was 45 and his father 56 when he was born. Kierkegaard was influenced early in life by the devoutly religious teachings of his father which concentrated on Christ's suffering. In 1830 Kierkegaard went to study theology, philosophy and literature at the University of Copenhagen.
Kierkegaard's final years were taken up with a sustained, outright attack on the Church of Denmark. He hoped to anger his contemporary Christians enough to inspire in them a stronger relationship to their faith. In 1850 he published Practice in Christianity, under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus. He felt this to be his most important book, and saw it as a reintroduction of Christianity. He felt that the removal of the offense of Christianity by the state church of Denmark made light of the message of Christianity. He also wrote articles for a journal called The Fatherland criticizing the state Lutheran church for claiming that all people born in Denmark are automatically Christian. These articles are compiled under the title Attack Upon "Christendom," While he was writing these articles , Kierkegaard was stricken with a spinal disease. He died within a month of his diagnosis on November 11, 1855.

Danish philosophy has a long tradition as part of Western philosophy.
Perhaps the most influential Danish philosopher was Søren Kierkegaard, the creator of Christian existentialism, which inspired the philosophical movement of Existentialism. Kierkegaard had a few Danish followers, including Harald Høffding, who later in his life moved on to join the movement of positivism. Among Kierkegaard's other followers include Jean-Paul Sartre who was impressed with Kierkegaard's views on the individual, and Rollo May, who helped create humanistic psychology.

During 1943 the Germans occupied Denmark and made plans to deport Danish Jews to the death camps. During the night of September 30-October 1, however, thousands of Danes took part in transporting their Jewish countrymen to safety in Sweden. While most other nations in Nazi-occupied Europe cooperated with the deportation of Jews, the Danish rescue was so successful that not a single Danish Jew is known to have died at the hands of the Nazis. During the war, Knud Dyby served on the Danish police force. Danish philosopher Anders Fogh Jensen guides us through some of the primary issues in the philosophy of Michel Foucault (1926-84). Anders demonstrates that, to Foucault, the history of the systems of thought and the systems of governance - the history of how we think and how we think about governance - are one and the same. He also shows how Foucault is an extension of both Kant and Nietzsche in a history of how the categories of the sciences and thought change throughout time, and how knowledge, built on the categories of a certain time, is also always entangled in power. This explanation is about how punitive discipline functions, and finally also a suggestion of how the post-disciplinary society can be understood as a Project Society.

During 1943 the Germans occupied Denmark and made plans to deport Danish Jews to the death camps. During the night of September 30-October 1, however, thousands of Danes took part in transporting their Jewish countrymen to safety in Sweden. While most other nations in Nazi-occupied Europe cooperated with the deportation of Jews, the Danish rescue was so successful that not a single Danish Jew is known to have died at the hands of the Nazis.
During the war, Knud Dyby served on the Danish police force. He played a significant role in the rescue of the Danish Jews and for his work has been recognized as a "Righteous Gentile" by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. Mr. Dyby's talk, which will focus on the Danes' struggle to save the Jews, will be preceded by a short film, Rescue in October.
At OSU, we have observed Holocaust Memorial Week every year since 1987 and the breadth and the duration of our effort are unmatched in the Pacific Northwest. This program grows from the belief that educational institutions can do much to combat prejudice of all kinds, and to foster respect for the diversity that is America, by promoting an awareness of the Holocaust, perhaps the most horrific historical indicator of the high cost of prejudice. It is particularly important to teach young people about the Holocaust, so that coming generations will not forget the lessons that a preceding one learned at such cost. This emphasis recalls the motto of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: "For the dead and the living, we must bear witness."
