Mary Anne (alternatively Mary Ann or Marian) Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist and translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and well known for their realism and psychological insight.
She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years.
Her 1872 work, Middlemarch, has been described as the greatest novel in the English language by Martin Amis and by Julian Barnes.

Virginia Woolf famously said that Middlemarch is “one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.” It is also frequently said to be the best nineteenth-century novel written in English and the most perfect example of classic British realism. Its capacious scope, depth of compassion, and careful attention to the details of human experience transcend its Victorian origins; it continues to attract ardent devotees almost 150 years after its publication. In this course we will examine the language of Middlemarch and nuances of form, plot, and character. We will explore George Eliot’s life and take a sustained interest in the historica

"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music."
"Life began with waking up and loving my mother's face."
"It is easy to say how we love new friends, and what we think of them, but words can never trace out all the fibers that knit us to the old."
"Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms"
"What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life - to strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be one with each other in silent, unspeakable memories."
"I'm not denying the women are foolish: God almighty made 'em to match the men"
"It is never to late to be what you might have been"
"There is no despair so absolute as that which comes with the first moments of our first great sorrow, when we have not yet known what it is to have suffered and be healed, to have despaired and have recovered hope."
"Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away."
"What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined ... to strengthen each other ... to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories."
"The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us, and we see nothing but sand; the angels come to visit us, and we only know them when they are gone."
"The intense happiness of our union is derived in a high degree from the perfect freedom with which we each follow and declare our own impressions."
"I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved."
"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."
"The finest language is mostly made up of simple unimposing words."
"That's what a man wants in a wife, mostly; he wants to make sure one fool tells him he's wise."
"For what is love itself, for the one we love best? An enfolding of immeasurable cares which yet are better than any joys outside our love."
"I'm not denyin' the women are foolish. God Almighty made 'em to match the men."
"There are some cases in which the sense of injury breeds not the will to inflict injuries and climb over them as a ladder, but a hatred of all injury."
"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together."

We will explore George Eliot’s life and take a sustained interest in the historical context of the novel, including its relation to science, religion, political economy, and social history. The focus of the course will be on the pleasures of reading one of the great novels of all time and investigating materials that can enrich that experience.

In this lecture for Arts One at the University of British Columbia, Miranda Burgess gives historical context to the novel, discusses the various voices the narrator takes on, and argues that we can interpret the novel through the lens of Darwinian vs Spencerian views of evolution. Towards the end of the lecture, Professor Burgess talks about the ambiguity of agency in the text: whether the characters have much agency or are, as the title of one of the chapters says, "Borne Along by the Tide."
This video does not have the slides that the lecturer refers to. For a link to a video that does, please see here: http://artsone-open.arts.ubc.ca/george-eliot-the-mill-on-the-floss/
