Korean Confucianism is the form of Confucianism developed in Korea. One of the most substantial influences in Korean intellectual history was the introduction of Confucian thought as part of the cultural influence from China. Today the legacy of Confucianism remains a fundamental part of Korean society, shaping the moral system, the way of life, social relations between old and young, high culture, and is the basis for much of the legal system. Confucianism in Korea is sometimes considered a pragmatic way of holding a nation together without the civil wars and internal dissent that was inherited from the Goryeo dynasty, and before.
King Gwangjong created the national civil service examinations, and King Seongjong was a key figure in establishing Confucianism. King Seongjong established Gukjagam. Gukjagam was the highest educational institution of the Goryeo dynasty. This was facilitated by the establishment, in 1398, of the Sunggyungwan – an academy with a Confucian curriculum – and the building of an altar at the palace, where the king would worship his ancestors.

His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism (法家) or Taoism (道家) during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE -- 220 CE). Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism (儒家). It was introduced to Europe by the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who was the first to Latinise the name as "Confucius."

It used to be said that South Korea's biggest export was babies - Korean children, unwanted in their own land, were adopted by loving new parents outside the country, particularly in the United States ... On top of that, rules were tightened so the unwanted children of unwed Korean mothers had to be registered before adoption ... Ten years ago, 1,200 Koreans were adopted abroad ... Korean Confucianism places great emphasis on ancestors....

With tweaks and turns as HMI vrooms along the growth highway (it is the only auto major that grew by 8.8% in a 10.3% declining market in India in FY 2013-14), the management framework seems to be far removed from founder Chung Ju Yung's style who ran it with ideals borrowed liberally from Korean Confucianism through the 1960s, 70s and 80s ... And the Koreans do it with their inimitable inwha, or harmonization....

Korean students are some of the most studious that I've met ... Korean 'helicopter' mums take the main responsibility for their children and their education ... Koreans have a Confucian saying, "the route to prosperity is through education" so they are happy to pay money (and lots of it) to educate their children ... academies (hogwan - in Korean) after 10pm....
