Harpal Brar, Chairman of the CPGB-ML speaks on the significance of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Victory over Fascism. Much is written and spoken about WW1 and WW2 - yet it is truly staggering how few people, an particularly how few British Workers, really understand the causes and significance of this struggle, in which 60 million workers gave their lives. The imperialists (Britain, France, USA, Germany, Japan...) fought, and many millions died to preserve and enforce the wage and colonial slavery of the capitalist class. They fought for slaves and booty and nothing more. And yet by their masterful leadership, bold strategy and heroic courage and self-sacrifice, the Soviet Union and international communist movement, won world-historic victories which not only preserved their hard won socialist nation, but brought into being a swath of socialist democracies across Europe and Asia, invigorated the anti-colonial struggle, and decisively shifted the balance of power in favour of working people on a global scale. The victories won by the Soviet Union changed and shaped our world, and all workers should not only know these episode in our history, but we should be truly proud of these earth shattering achievements made by our class, which herald the bright new world we are capable of bringing into being. This presentation should be compulsory viewing for every British Citizen, and every worker world-wide: help spread the word! ” The bourgeoisie turns everything into a commodity, hence also the writing of history. It is a part of its being, of its condition for existence, to falsify all goods; it falsified the writing of history. And the best-paid historiography is that which is falsified for the purposes of the bourgeoisie.” (Engels, ‘Material for the History of Ireland’, 1870). This shrewd observation of Engels should be kept in mind when judging: (i) the causes of the Second World War (ii) the events leading up to it (iii) the role in it of the Soviet Union, on the one hand, and the imperialist camp, on the other hand, and (iv) the results of the war. The Second, as indeed the First, World War is inseparable from imperialism, whose product it was. Tens of millions of people were slaughtered to decide which set of bandits – the Anglo-American-French or the German-Italian-Japanese – was to get what share of the loot. The only way out of the morass of imperialist wars is socialism; therefore the struggle against war must be inseparably connected with the struggle for the overthrow of imperialism and the establishment of socialism. The ruling classes of the ‘democratic’ imperialist countries were complicit in the rise and strengthening of fascism. It was the crowning achievement of the Soviet people to have defeated Nazism – this monstrous product of imperialism in crisis. The Soviet victory in the Second World War was a disaster for imperialism. If the First World War brought into existence the great and glorious Soviet Union, the end of the Second World War led to the creation of a mighty socialist bloc, stretching from the Soviet Union through eastern and central Europe to the Far East. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the bourgeoisie has gone on the rampage not only to belittle the role of the Soviet Union in defeating fascism, but also to malign the record of socialism itself. This is particularly true of the Baltic states, Poland and, especially, Ukraine. In the last-named country, Stefan Bandera, the notorious Nazi stooge, is honoured with statues and street names as a great fighter for national liberation – not against the Nazis but against the Soviet Union!!! The economic crisis of 1929 made the inter-imperialist war a certainty. The law of uneven development of capitalism saw to it that some countries, notably Germany, Japan and Italy, had spurted ahead in their development, but their share in terms of markets, mineral resources, and avenues for investment was dis-proportionately small compared with the share of countries such as Britain and France. It is the first time that foreign troops have been invited to participate in a military parade in China. The display marked the country's endeavor to revive the forgotten memory that China and its global allies joined hands to win a war against "the darkest forces ever" in the history of mankind 70 years ago. Nearly 1,000 high-spirited soldiers from 17 countries marched in the wake of veterans and Chinese army formations, marking the foreign troops' premiere in a Chinese military parade. Among them were Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Pakistan, Serbia, Tajikistan and Russia. Six others, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, Fiji, Laos, Vanuatu and Venezuela, marched their delegations for parade. Most of those countries are sufferers of the World War II and some of them gained national independence as the post-war world order took shape.

Agent Orange, Brutalising Asia in popular culture and the Devil' input to the PhD program at Otago I have worked as a professor in both hemispheres and have learned a lot about how the world is run by its owners. The owners are not the monarchs or the governments but the are long standing money-lending bloodlines who perpetually fund wars to bankrupt the participating nations. There are no winners and now every country on the globe is in a toxic debt pool that in Obama's case is bigger for his regime alone than for all previous presidents added together. The G20 political puppets who steal from the worlds people using the monetary institutions planted by the Rothschilds and those fabulously wealthy families now have given up the issuance of public democratic currency to these wealthy families who now run ALL CENTRAL BANKS on the globe. They are demonising Islam now hell bent on WW3 to cover up the massive crimes against the peace loving but brutalised and austere people. They have gone to far.....GLOBALLY citizens are now multi-lingual and are begining to rise up as they un derstand their vicious manipulation of minds, jokes on genocides, religious fraud and the concept of honest law enforcement, BUT THEY ARE REALLY CLEVER AND THE MASTERPLAN HAS PREVAILED FOR OVER 2000 years. Seeing what the do to massive continents brings tears to the decent people's eyes but it is too late to save the lives of relatives and children CONSCRIPTED to kill each other in distant lands for a cause that they do not understand.....they have persecuted people in this system (who are now the worlds truly free press) and the exposure of the asset stripping of all sectors of life is the straw that will break the camels back . The high profile brutalisation of Vietnam Korea and all around the golden triangle and CHINA (the 200 year old opium wars......led to the great opium coup in the 1950s -60s. It is driven by greedy fascism and the cover ups......even to the disappearance of fascist PMs in the UK like Lewis Hill (all over todays news as a cover up) who was picked to replace Winston Churchill in the 1950s but was so extreme in his views that he has been deleted from British history and in HANSARD. Students who have come to my lab with scholarships to fund it from the vietnamese state have been persecuted too just because they wanted insight into the defoliants that were deployed to steal their country and cull millions of innocent bystanders in these unjustified corporate and land grabs. The media manipulate all but the brightest of minds (Mohamed Ali the boxer refused to fight against people he had never met for a cause he did not understand and refused to be conscripted so was sent to jail in America.....but still the villainy prevails and the musicians picked for greatness mock the war dead and the violence. All participants are dismembered by addiction, the violence, HIV in the prostitution dens and we are in Iraq replaying it all for the third time in a decade as our economy has imploded and our treasuries are emptid by the private families who live in the tax havens and manipulate the govts ruthlessly (and the illegitimate monarchy bloodlines in the vicicious palace breeding chambers). My knowledge of Greg hallett's life and work and his killing is a major threat to this corrupted system but the people (impoverished and pay frozen for lack of public funds) are beginning to rally round cos they know that god is on our side. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said Japan and China should avoid repeating the past mistakes of Britain and Germany, which fought in World War One despite strong economic ties, according to his main government spokesman in Tokyo. Abe was speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday. His comments were provided by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga after the Financial Times said Abe had told reporters that China and Japan were in a "similar situation" to Britain and Germany before 1914, whose close economic ties had not prevented the conflict. He also said China's steady rise in military spending was a major source of regional instability, the newspaper reported. Suga said earlier in the day that Abe's comments should by no means be interpreted to mean that war between the two Asian giants was possible, noting that Abe had said dialogue and the rule of law, not armed forces and threats, were needed for peace and prosperity in Asia. Sino-Japanese ties, long plagued by what Beijing sees as Japan's failure to atone for its occupation of parts of China in the 1930s and 1940s, have worsened recently due to a territorial row, Tokyo's mistrust of Beijing's military buildup and Abe's December visit to a shrine that critics say glorifies Japan's wartime past. Suga told a news conference that Abe - noting that this year is the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One - said Britain and Germany clashed despite their deep economic ties. Asked if China and Japan might clash militarily, Abe replied that such a conflict "would be a great loss not only for Japan and China but for the world and we need to make sure such a thing would not happen", according to Suga. China and Japan, the world's second- and third-largest economies respectively, have deep business ties and bilateral trade that was worth nearly $334 billion in 2012, according to Japanese figures. China criticised Abe's historical reference. "It would be better to face up to what Japan did to China before the war and in recent history than to say stuff about pre-World War One British-German relations," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference in Beijing. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, on a visit to Beijing this week, stressed that all sides should avoid unilateral action to assert maritime claims, and that China should work with its neighbours to reduce tension in the East and South China seas. China's Defence Ministry said an air force patrol in the East China Sea Air Defence Identification Zone, set up by Beijing late last year despite protests from Japan, South Korea, the United States and others, had recently encountered several "foreign" military aircraft and given them verbal warnings. It did not say which country the aircraft were from, but added that China had "investigated their identity". NEW YEAR MESSAGE In a message on Thursday to local Chinese-language papers ahead of the lunar new year, Abe said Japan had "built a free and democratic country and taken the path of peace" since the end of World War Two. "Nothing has been changed in the policy of continuing to uphold this position," he said, according to a Japanese version provided by the prime minister's office. "I believe you, who live in Japan, can understand this fundamental stance of ours." In his keynote address at the Davos forum, Abe called for military restraint in the region and took a veiled swipe at China's military buildup. "We must...restrain military expansion in Asia, which could otherwise go unchecked," Abe said. "Military budgets should be made completely transparent and there should be public disclosure in a form that can be verified," Abe said, adding disputes should be resolved through dialogue and the rule of law, and not through force and coercion. He did not single out China by name. China's state Xinhua news agency blasted the Yasukuni visit again on Thursday, saying it was "taken by all peace-loving nations as a despicable kowtow to Fascism" and accusing Abe of pushing "regional tensions precariously close to boiling". Xinhua added: "While frozen ties with neighbouring countries can never make Japan a reliable and constructive player in regional and global issues, sincere repentance over its war past can." Abe's December 26 pilgrimage prompted a rare statement of disappointment from Tokyo's ally Washington, which is worried about rising regional tensions and fears entanglement in any conflict over tiny, uninhabited isles in the East China Sea that are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China. Among the main long-term causes of World War II were Italian fascism in the 1920s, Japanese militarism and invasions of China in the 1930s, and especially the political takeover in 1933 of Germany by Hitler and his Nazi Party and its aggressive foreign policy. The immediate cause was Britain and France declaring war on Germany after it invaded Poland in September 1939. Problems arose in Weimar Germany that experienced strong currents of revanchism after the Treaty of Versailles that concluded its defeat in World War I in 1918. Dissatisfactions of treaty provisions included the demilitarizarion of the Rhineland, the prohibition of unification with Austria and the loss of German-speaking territories such as Danzig, Eupen-Malmedy and Upper Silesia despite Wilson's Fourteen Points, the limitations on the Reichswehr making it a token military force, the war-guilt clause, and last but not least the heavy tribute that Germany had to pay in the form of war reparations, and that become an unbearable burden after the Great Depression. The most serious internal cause in Germany was the instability of the political system, as large sectors of politically active Germans rejected the legitimacy of the Weimar Republic. After his rise and take-over of power in 1933 to a large part based on these grievances, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis heavily promoted them and also ideas of vastly ambitious additional demands based on Nazi ideology such as uniting all Germans (and further all Germanic peoples) in Europe in a single nation; the acquisition of "living space" (Lebensraum) for primarily agrarian settlers (Blut und Boden), creating a "pull towards the East" (Drang nach Osten) where such territories were to be found and colonized, in a model that the Nazis explicitly derived from the American Manifest Destiny in the Far West and its clearing of native inhabitants; the elimination of Bolshevism; and the hegemony of an "Aryan"/"Nordic" so-called Master Race over the "sub-humans" (Untermenschen) of inferior races, chief among them Slavs and Jews. Tensions created by those ideologies and the dissatisfactions of those powers with the interwar international order steadily increased. Italy laid claim on Ethiopia and conquered it in 1935, Japan created a puppet state in Manchuria in 1931 and expanded beyond in China from 1937, and Germany systematically flouted the Versailles treaty, reintroducing conscription in 1935 with the Stresa Front's failure after having secretly started re-armament, remilitarizing the Rhineland in 1936, annexing Austria in March 1938, and the Sudetenland in October 1938. All those aggressive moves met only feeble and ineffectual policies of appeasement from the League of Nations and the Entente Cordiale, in retrospect symbolized by the "peace for our time" speech following the Munich Conference, that had allowed the annexation of the Sudeten from interwar Czechoslovakia. When the German Führer broke the promise he had made at that conference to respect that country's future territorial integrity in March 1939 by sending troops into Prague, its capital, breaking off Slovakia as a German client state, and absorbing the rest of it as the "Protectorate of Bohemia-Moravia", Britain and France tried to switch to a policy of deterrence. As Nazi attentions turned towards resolving the "Polish Corridor Question" during the summer of 1939, Britain and France committed themselves to an alliance with Poland, threatening Germany with a two-front war. On their side, the Germans assured themselves of the support of the USSR by signing a non-aggression pact with them in August, secretly dividing Eastern Europe into Nazi and Soviet spheres of influence. The stage was then set for the Danzig crisis to become the immediate trigger of the war in Europe started on 1 September 1939. Following the Fall of France in June 1940, the Vichy regime signed an armistice, which tempted the Empire of Japan to join the Axis powers and invade French Indochina to improve their military situation in their war with China. This provoked the then neutral United States to respond with an embargo. Starting his journey on the revolutionary path from JNU in late 1980s, Naveen embraced the ideology of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism. Within a decade he was working among the oppressed adivasis of Eastern Ghats, and laid down his life for the revolution on 18 February 2000 at Darakonda in Visakhapatnam during a battle with the fascist Andhra Pradesh Police. Comrade Naveen (Yalavarthi Naveen Babu) was born in a village in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in a middle peasant family. He completed his graduation in Hyderabad and joined M A Sociology in Meerut University in 1984. In 1986 he joined the M Phil programme in Sociology in JNU, and after completing his M Phil dissertation in 1988 he enrolled for the PhD (Naveen’s book From Varna to Jati: Political Economy of Caste in Indian Social Formation based on his M Phil dissertation has been published in 2009). Naveen formed the Student’s forum which stood for the exposure of the SFI’s politics of compromise in JNU. In 1986, the Delhi Radical Students Organisation (DRSO) was formed. Soon Naveen became part of the DRSO in 1988. In 1989, when Delhi became the centre for the ‘upper’ caste anti-Mandal mania, the DRSO-led Student’s Solidarity swam against the tide by struggling for reservations for the OBCs. When there were vacillations amongst many in the revolutionary ranks, Naveen stood like a rock, patiently explaining the necessity for DRSO to support reservations, thereby drawing it closer to the oppressed sections. In 1990, he represented DRSO in the countrywide students’ body, All India Revolutionary Students’ Federation (AIRSF), taking responsibility for editing its student magazine Kalam. Naveen also played a key role in organising an International Seminar on Nationality Struggles which was held in February 1996 in Delhi. The seminar under the auspices of the All India Peoples’ Revolutionary Forum (AIPRF) played a major role in linking the class struggles with the nationality struggles, giving birth to the Coordination Committee of Struggles of Nationalities and Democratic Movements (CCNDM). This effort of Comrade Naveen remains a strong bridge between the revolutionary and nationality movements of South Asia. Comrade Naveen’s is a life of an exemplary revolutionary and an inspiration for the radical students’ movement of the country. He stood for the unity of words and deeds, theory and practice. He was an intellectual in the tradition of martyrs Christopher Caudwell and David Guest who laid down their lives in the Spanish Civil War or Chaganti Bhaskar Rao martyred in the forests of Srikakulam. Comrade Naveen laid down his life fighting the brutal Indian state for a new society free from all forms of exploitation and oppression. DSU commemorates the martyrdom of Comrade Naveen through this Memorial Lecture and remembers the students and youth of the country whose martyrdom has held high the red flag of the Indian Revolution. “For every youth who falls while carrying the flag of revolution in your country, more youth are coming forward to pick up those flags and march on. Naveen must be very much alive among them.” – Ngugi wa Thiongo.
