Serbo-Croat/Nat
Tensions are rising between ethnic Albanians and Serb police in southern Serbia, along the border with the NATO-controlled Kosovo province.
A Serb police major was killed and three other officers were wounded when unidentified armed perpetrators attacked a police patrol over the weekend.
One ethnic Albanian was also killed in the shooting.
The border village of Presevo in southern Serbia is one of three towns dominantly populated by an Albanian minority.
Including the neighbouring towns of Bujanovac and Medvedja, some 80-thousand ethnic Albanians are believed to live there.
The latest eruption of violence occurred at the weekend when a Serb police major and an ethnic Albanian were killed in the nearby village of Dobrosin, populated solely by ethnic Albanians. Three others were wounded in the attack.
Officials in the town of Presevo believe an Albanian militia has surfaced to combat the attacks of the Serbian police.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbian)
"We heard about the appearance of people in uniforms, calling themselves Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac, and after three or four days all newspapers began talking about them, but as a party which politically organizes ethnic Albanians in this region we haven't got further information about the existence of that structure."
SUPER-CAPTION: Riza Halimi, Mayor of Presevo and ethnic Albanian
The Serb police meanwhile have stepped up their search for the militia at checkpoints across the region.
They allege the fighters are infiltrating the region from the NATO-run province and accuse the Alliance of aiding these "terrorist groups."
NATO itself, worried about the potential for escalation, has increased manpower on the Kosovo side of the area.
Armed Albanian fighters in camouflage uniform and red arm patches with the Albanian national symbol, the black double-headed eagle, have been seen on both sides along the tense administrative border between Kosovo and Serbia proper.
Taking their inspiration from the K-L-A, this new army inside Serbia has declared themselves as the region's "new defenders" and is officially known in the region by the acronym U-C-P-M-B.
They roam the hills with new guns and new uniforms on a mission to protect the thousands of Albanians living there still terrified by the threat of a Serb attack.
Its fighters say they are trying to protect ethnic Albanian villagers who have been fleeing their homes to escape the Serb threat.
Their fear is that what happened in Kosovo will happen to them.
They fear Serb paramilitaries will hunt them down and kill them en-masse.
In the Serbian village of Dobrasin, 80 per cent of Albanians have already left with the aid of the International Rescue Committee.
Many of the families who have escaped from Dobrasin are now based in the Kosovan village of Malishevo, situated 50 kilometres east of Pristina, Kosovo.
Here, entire families squeeze into small rooms with the few belongings they've been able to bring with them.
Back in the southern Serbian town of Bujanovac life continues. Albanians here want to go on with their lives and avoid having to flee the area.
Many are pleased that steps appear to have been taken to ensure their wishes are fulfilled.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbian)
"One is not safe as before, but I think that the relations have to be good between us, all of us want to live better lives."

The Irish United Nations worker shot and wounded near the Serbia-Kosovo border said on Wednesday that he was attacked by a suspected Albanian militia group.
It is thought that a new Albanian militia group with the title U-C-P-N-B - the "Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac" is carrying out operations over the border in Serbia.
Marcel Grogan believes he's the first victim of the new group.
Irishman Marcel Grogan is recovering from his injuries at a U-S military base in Kosovo.
The U-N worker was shot in the leg on Tuesday by unknown assailants on the Serbian side of the provincial boundary.
Grogan is pretty certain that his attackers were not Serbian.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"I could say they weren't in the Serbian military or police uniforms. They were in camouflage uniforms but I don't know what the organisation was."
SUPER CAPTION: Marcel Grogan, UN worker
The U-N worker believes that the group could well be an Albanian militia group - the U-N-C-P-B (The Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac) who are carrying out operations over the border into Serbia at the present time.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"They were in fatigues, so they were dressed as military, they were militia of some kind. They had some kind of insignia but I wasn't able to spot what organisation they belonged to. They didn't speak English, I think they were Albanian speaking. I don't speak Albanian so we couldn't communicate very well."
SUPER CAPTION: Marcel Grogan, UN worker
Grogan appears to have been an innocent victim after stumbling across the group by accident.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"The initial group that fired on us were five to ten people. All were armed, all were wearing uniforms, and we came across two further groups of militia of a similar nature and size, one at the edge of the village, and one inside the village. I think about 30 I saw that time."

XFA
VOICED BY STEPHEN BAKER
K-FOR troops have closed the border between Kosovo and southern Serbia.
The area has been the scene of heavy fighting between ethnic Albanian militias and Serb police.
In the three-mile buffer zone between central Serbia and Kosovo, two days of attacks by the independence-minded rebels have left four Serb policemen dead, with many others wounded.
VOICE-OVER:
00.00 UPSOUND of chanting
00.03 These men are ethnic Albanians, training inside Serbia, to fight Serbs.
They're members of the U-C-P-M-B militia, and say they're fighting to protect their ethnic Albanian brothers.
A significant number of Albanians still live in Serbia proper, in a region called the Presevo Valley.
Albanians have long been discriminated against inside Serbia.
The West hopes the new Yugoslav President, Vojislav Kostunica, will change that.
But these men say the valley must be taken away from Yugoslav control.
00.34 UPSOUND of fighter talking
00.37 "The change of the President of Yugoslavia was the Serbs' concern," this man says "for us there is no change. We have our own goal and we will reach it."
00.49 In recent days Albanian militias have stepped up military action against Serb police inside the buffer zone on the Kosovo border.
Four policemen have been killed, a dozen others injured.
01.02 U-S soldiers from K-For have been forced to close the border to try to prevent Albanian fighters crossing from Kosovo into the rest of Serbia.
01.10 And, they say, they've had some success.
01.13 SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We intercepted a van that was carrying a lot of munitions these munitions consisted of rocket propelled grenades, hand grenades, a large calibre machine gun as well as other munitions."
SUPERCAPTION: Lt. Col. Seth Braverman, K-FOR spokesman
01.27 UPSOUND
01.30 But there are fears the violence could escalate, if Serb police fight back.
Any military action in the border region has the potential to lead to fresh clashes between Serbs and NATO, something neither side wants.

Actor and journalist Ross Kemp is not only an award-winning performer and investigative reporter, he's also a badass.
During a recent journey to Papua New Guinea, Kemp stumbled across a group of militia while searching for a local general. While the gunmen he finds are initially friendly and offer him food and some form of cigarette, they quickly turn confrontational and demand that Kemp get on his knees.
"They're going, 'get down on your hands and knees, get down on your hands and knees.' Now, you know at that point, you're going to become a victim," Kemp says.
Rather than submit to victimhood, Kemp proceeds to grab the barrels of whatever gun is pointed at him and insist repeatedly that he is not going to be killed that day by them or anyone else.
"Are you going to kill me?" he asks. "No one's going to f***ing kill me."
Out of respect for this ballsy move, Kemp suggest, his would be killers were moved to back down.

APTN has exclusive pictures from two villages which are in ethnic Albanian hands.
This is the Zejligovo (ZHAY-LEE-GO-VO) Valley in North West Macedonia
Ethnic Albanian rebels say they want equal rights with other Macedonians living here - and they're prepared to fight for them.
The hillsides are honeycombed with their bunkers, the paths that wind through the forests constantly patrolled.
The past weeks had seen fierce fighting until a shaky truce was agreed.
On Thursday, the rebels volunteered to continue their ceasefire while their demands are being considered by the Macedonian government.
But a ceasefire doesn't mean they're willing to lay down their weapons.
Nearby villages have been under constant attack from the Macedonian army, determined to flush the rebels out.
One village, Matejce, is deserted and in ruins, after fighting which started here on May 24.
Dead animals lie in the streets and the mosque is destroyed.
The village had been divided between rebel ethnic Albanians and the Macedonian army.
But the Macedonians, who according to the Albanians, only had three tanks in Matejce, lost their part of the village after a fierce battle.
This was one of their tanks, now in no man's land.
Nobody can reach the tank because of sniper fire from both sides, but the Albanians say eight dead Macedonian soldiers lie inside.
In the neighbouring village of Otija, whole families including women and children are living in fear in bunkers and cellars.
They say they would rather stay than become refugees, asking for help from the Macedonians, whose army has driven them from their homes.
Their fate rests in the hands of the negotiators, now frantically seeking a solution in Skopje.

Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama wrapped up a two-day trip to Serbia on Tuesday with a visit to the ethnic Albanian-dominated south.
Rama said in the southern town of Presevo on Tuesday the two countries need to overcome a troubled past and work toward European Union membership.
He was welcomed by Presevo residents who held a special ceremony waving Albanian flags and playing traditional Albanian music.
Relations between Albania and Serbia hit a low during the 1998-99 Kosovo War.
Soon after that conflict, ethnic Albanians in Serbia's Presevo Valley staged an insurgency.
The conflict ended in 2001 with a deal granting the ethnic Albanian minority more rights.
On Monday, Rama's visit to Belgrade, the first by an Albanian official in 68 years, was underlined with tensions as he remarked that Serbia has to come to terms with losing its former province.
Kosovo's 2008 secession is fiercely rejected by Serbia.

In 1998, the massacres by Serbs of at Drenica prompted a surge in the level of violence in the Albanian struggle.
Support is growing for violent Albanian struggle, in the light of the massacre at Drenica. There the Serbs massacred 41 ethnic Albanians, claiming they were searching for members of the Kosovo Liberation Army. The village was tear-gassed, the houses shelled to pieces. The survivors deny that there were any gunmen in the compound. The village is only 500m from a Serb police base, an unlikely Place to set up a guerrilla camp. Now 60 refugees spend each night in the schoolhouse, as Serb choppers circle overhead. It was meant as a warning to the Albanians against armed resistance to Serb rule. In fact it’s had the opposite effect, galvanising the Albanians behind a direct challenge to Serb domination. Adem Demaci, the ‘Nelson Mandela of Kosovo’, who spent 28 years in prison campaigning for Albanian independence, says Albanian violence is in self defence. A diplomatic solution seems impossible with even the moderate Albanian leadership insisting on independence in Kosovo, an outcome that the Serbs and the international community show no sign of accepting.

Italian/Eng/Nat
Some 900 Albanian refugees have been rescued by Italian coastguards from a leaky gunboat sinking off the coast off Brindisi, Italy.
But refugees continue to flee into southern Italian ports despite the risks involved.
Around 1500 turned up on Monday.
Italian coastguards off the southern port of Brindisi maintain their vigilance as more Albanian refugees flow into the port.
Since the hostilities began in Albania more than 6000 have made the crossing - Monday alone 1500 more refugees arrived in the Italian ports of Brindisi and Otranto.
In a dramatic sea rescue the Italian coastguards pulled 900 panicking Albanians from a sinking gunboat - a vessel made for 50 people.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The emergency is going on we are very busy you understand. It is necessary, first of all to save the human lives at sea. Actually I must say that perhaps we had luck once again tonight and this morning."
SUPER CAPTION: Admiral Renato Ferrero
While the Italians are allowing the Albanians in, the Italian government is anxious not to suffer a refugee crisis.
They are firm in their stance to send the refugees back once Albania becomes safer - but it may prove hard to do that.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"I don't want to leave Italy."
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
Charity organisations are taking in the refugees but are struggling to cope with the numbers.
Although they have constructed makeshift reception centres they are finding it difficult to care for so many people.
But for many Albanians it is the only option and so the exodus continues as they risk everything to flee from a country in chaos.

Natural Sound
Serbian troops have destroyed a series of bunkers in the village of Glodjane, which was captured earlier this week.
The strongpoints had been occupied by ethnic Albanian guerillas from the Kosovo Liberation Army, who were driven out after two days of heavy fighting.
The members of the Serb Militia are trying to ensure that the battered village of Glodjane can never be reoccupied by K-L-A forces.
The former rebel stronghold was captured by Serb forces on Wednesday following, two days of fierce fighting.
Five Serb policemen and two Yugoslav army soldiers were killed.
The Kosovo Information Centre, under ethnic Albanian control, reported that seven rebels were also killed and 49 wounded in the fighting.
Kosovo's main ethnic Albanian leader has announced his team to negotiate the province's future with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
This move was welcomed by the Serb-led government - Vice President Nikola Sainovic said a Serb delegation has been ready for months to resume talks, which broke off in May.
But Rugova's team faces a serious drawback - a lack of support from the rebel army itself - the K-L-A has so far refused to participate in negotiations.
