At present, the United States is one of the fattest nations on earth, where a number of the population are considered heavy enough to seriously endanger their health. ‘Obesity: A Deadly Risk’ follows four overweight Americans who are trying to shape up in order to change – perhaps even save – their own lives: - Bob Hyman, 45, is spending $6,000 on a four-week stay at the world-famous Duke Diet and Fitness Center, where he aims to figure out what drives him to over-eat... and stop his dangerous dining habits. - Joanne Harris, a nurse who weighs a mighty 310 pounds, is so morbidly obese that she may not survive much longer unless she loses weight – yet she’s tried every diet going. Now she’s turning to gastric bypass surgery, and hopes that this drastic operation to reduce her stomach to the size of her thumb will help her to lose nearly half of her present bodyweight. - 10-year-old Allie Rodriguez and 8-year-old Carly Campbell are only young, yet they respectively weigh 110 and 102 pounds – meaning they’re lessening their chances of safely growing older. They’re enrolling in a unique California-based scheme called Kidshape, where they and their families will learn about healthier eating and exercise. The documentary also hears from Walter Lindstrom, an obesity advocate who believes that being fat is the last health taboo, and visits Pennington Bio-Medical Labs in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where cutting-edge research is being undertaken into how people’s size can be affected by their genes. ‘Body Image’ Part 1- ‘Obesity: A Deadly Risk’ is essential viewing for anyone interested in one of the BIGGEST issues concerning human health today. A sharp rise in economic affluence, increasingly westernized diets and low exercise rates has lead to an explosion in the country's levels of obesity. 40% of Qataris are now obese and 20% suffer from diabetes, with 75% of diabetics under 45 years of age. As Dr Taheri explains, the effects could be far reaching. "They are going to be affected at a very young age with heart disease, problems with cancer, dementia, things that are going to affect the nation in the long term." Doctors like Taheri are hoping that a strict program of prevention, enforcing healthy diets and exercise regimes upon the nation's schoolchildren will be enough to limit the impact. There are psychological aspects to staying motivated for fitness and then a few rules to adopt for success. The speaker presents his ideas on motivation, measuring your fitness level, and exercises to become fit. Ogie Shaw is a native of Raleigh, NC. He is a veteran of the US Army and served in Vietnam. Afterwards, he graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill earning degrees in both Speech and Physical Education, later earning certification as a Health Promotion Director from the Cooper Institute® in Dallas, Texas. He served with the Portland Police Bureau and later joined a national network of medical and fitness leaders dedicated to teaching the health benefits of daily exercise. He has been an author, counselor, seminary graduate and pastor to Portland-area retirement homes. He has trained the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks, and he has been asked to write a book on his work providing fitness training for paraplegics. Ogie has had a passion for fitness, health, business, and music all of his life. His career goal is to establish a model for a fitness lifestyle for Americans that is sufficient to impact physical and mental health. He has given over 5000 speeches on fitness motivation.
