Tanzania's gross domestic product has expanded by 32 percent after the state rebased its calculation to incorporate new sectors in the economy, including big discoveries of natural gas. According to the national bureau of statistics, its gdp stood at 69.8 trillion tanzanian shillings after the rebasing, up from a previous estimate of 53 trillion shillings. Farming remains tanzania's economic mainstay, while tourism, mining, communications and financial services are the other key sectors. Tanzania has also made big natural gas discoveries, with revenues expected to give a boost to the economy by 2020. The base year for calculations was changed to 2007 from 2001 and the nbs said gdp growth for 2013 was subsequently revised up to 7.3 percent from 7 percent previously. The rebasing comes just months after kenya’s rebasing efforts, which saw the country’s ecopnomy revised up by 25 percent to 53.4 billion dollars in 2013.

Governments can make better decisions if they are more aware how forest ecosystems contribute to their economy and employment, and how forests benefit human well-being. This information could provide all concerned ministries with the necessary knowledge to decide how tropical deforestation rates can be reduced as part of a transition to a green economy. This Discussion Forum provides an overview of recent forest economic valuations carried out in Zambia, Tanzania and Panama by the UN-REDD Programme. Besides presenting key findings of these studies, the panellists will demonstrate how the results have been or can be used by their respective government agencies – including by incorporating them in the development of national REDD+ Strategies.

National Environment Management (NEMC) / United Nations in Tanzania
Tanzania's rich natural resources are fundamental for the country's growth and economic development. However, the under utilization of the potential of the environment and natural resources to the economy and people's livelihoods contributes to Tanzania standing as one of world's poorest countries.
PEI initiated the country programme in 2003 to support the government in addressing these issues and promoting sustainable development. The PEI Tanzania programme focuses on developing capabilities of key national institutions in designing and implementing pro-poor economic growth interventions and sustainable development.Thereby the country programme is contributing to national development plans (NDPs and UNDAP 2011 -2015) as well and the achievement of the overall PEI Programme outputs.
PEI Tanzania is jointly led by the President's Office Planning Commission. In addition various sector ministries such as Finance, Regional Administration and Local Government, National Bureau of Statistics and Vice President's Office--Division of Environmentare involved in the project implementation. PEI Tanzania is also closely collaborating with the University of Dar es Salaam and with the UNDP CO and is part of the One-UN processes under the UNRC.
