I participated in a Mass celebrated with the Byzantine rite in the church of Santissima Annunziata, in San Nicola, in Greek and according to the traditions of the ancient Albanian community. The ritual dates back from the ancient origins of the Christian churches in the East, but it is linked to the Roman Catholic Church and has nothing to do with the schism of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Father Giovanni Stasso explains patiently, to whomever like me manages to find the road that leads to the church, that myrrh, songs and prayers lead to more insightful reflections and meditation. Here I was able to appreciate the real fascination of these places. Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk was born in 1970, in Stryi, Ukrainian SSR. He was ordained as a priest on 26 June 1994. From 2002 to 2005 he worked as head of the secretariat of Major Archbishop Lubomyr Cardinal Husar. In 2006 he obtained a Doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and he was rector of the seminary of Lviv. On January 14, 2009, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires and consecrated bishop on 7 April 2009, by Archbishop Ihor Vozniak. On 10 April 2010, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the same diocese. In addition to Ukrainian and Spanish, he knows Polish, Russian, English, Italian, Greek, Latin and Old Slavonic. On 23 March 2011, Sviatoslav Shevchuk was elected Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church to replace the retired Lubomyr Husar. The Primate of the Church holds the office of Archbishop-Major of Kiev-Halych and All Rus, though the hierarchs of the church have acclaimed their primate "Patriarch" and have requested Papal recognition of, and elevation to, this title. The Church is one of the successor Churches to the acceptance of Christianity by Grand Prince Vladimir the Great of Kiev, in 988. The Church has followed the spread of the Ukrainian diaspora, and now has some 40 hierarchs in over a dozen countries on four continents, including three other metropolitans in Poland, the United States, and Canada.
