In "A Fool There Was", 1915, a classic silent film directed by Frank Powell, Theda Bara plays a vamp who uses her charms to seduce and corrupt a moral Wall Street lawyer, John Schuyler (Edward Jose). A Fool There Was was long considered controversial for such risqué intertitle cards as "Kiss me, my fool!"
“A Fool There Was” was also a watershed in early film publicity. At a press conference in January, the studio gave an elaborate fictional biography of Theda Bara, making her an exotic Arabian actress, and presented her in a flamboyant fur outfit. Then they made an intentional leak to the press that the whole thing was a hoax. This may have been one of Hollywood's first publicity stunts.The film marked the first on-screen appearance of the popular World War I-era film actress May Allison.
This is one of the few Theda Bara films in existence. The others are: The Unchastened Woman (1925), The Stain (1914), East Lynne (1916), and two short comedies she made for Hal Roach in the mid-1920s. It showcases Bara's status as the original screen "vamp" (so named for her now-lost portrayal of a female vampire).

Theda Bara ( July 29, 1885 -- April 7, 1955) was an American silent film and stage actress. Bara was one of the most popular actresses of the silent era, and one of cinema's earliest sex symbols. Her femme fatale roles earned her the nickname The Vamp (short for vampire). Bara made more than 40 films between 1914 and 1926, but most are now lost due to a fire that destroyed the majority of her films in 1937. After her marriage to Charles Brabin in 1921, she made two more feature films and retired from acting in 1926. Bara never appeared in a sound film. She died of stomach cancer at the age of 69.
Most of Bara's early films were shot around the East Coast, primarily at the Fox Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Bara lived with her family in New York City during this time. The rise of Hollywood as the center of the American film industry forced her to relocate to Los Angeles to film the epic Cleopatra (1917), which became one of Bara's biggest hits. No known prints of Cleopatra exist today, but numerous photographs of Bara in costume as the Queen of the Nile have survived.
Between 1915 and 1919, Bara was Fox studio's biggest star but, tired of being typecast as a vamp, she allowed her five-year contract with Fox to expire. Her final Fox film was The Lure of Ambition (1919).
Bara's best-known roles were as the "vamp", although she attempted to avoid typecasting by playing wholesome heroines in films such as Under Two Flags and Her Double Life. She also appeared as Juliet in a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Although Bara took her craft seriously, she was too successful as an exotic "wanton woman" to develop a more versatile career.
The origin of Bara's stage name is disputed; The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats says it came from director Frank Powell, who learned Theda had a relative named Barranger. In promoting the 1917 film Cleopatra, Fox Studio publicists noted that the name was an anagram of Arab death, and her press agents claimed inaccurately that she was "the daughter of an Arab sheik and a French woman, born in the Sahara." In 1917 the Goodman family legally changed its surname to Bara.
Bara is often cited as the first sex symbol of the movies. She was well known for wearing very revealing costumes in her films. Such outfits were banned from Hollywood films after the Production Code started in 1930, and then was more strongly enforced in 1934.
It was popular at that time to promote an actress as mysterious, with an exotic background. The studios promoted Bara with a massive publicity campaign, billing her as the Egyptian-born daughter of a French actress and an Italian sculptor. They claimed she had spent her early years in the Sahara Desert under the shadow of the Sphinx, then moved to France to become a stage actress. (In fact, Bara had never been to Egypt or France.)

Cleopatra is a silent film created in 1912 by Helen Gardner and the Helen Gardner Picture Players. The film, in which Gardner stars in the title role, was based on a play written by Victorien Sardou.
In a series of elaborately staged tableaux, it depicts Cleopatra (Gardner) and her love affairs, first with handsome fisherman-slave Pharon, then with Marc Antony.
The film features lavish sets and costumes and at just over an hour, it was considered fairly lengthy.

Charlie Chaplin's "A Burlesque On Carmen"
Charlie Chaplin's Burlesque on Carmen was Chaplin's 13th film for Essanay Films. It was released in 1915 and then later recut into a different version in 1916. Charlie Chaplin played Dain Hosiery and Edna Purviance played Carmen. Carmen was very popular at this time and one of the reasons Chaplin decided to create his own comedy version on the opera. Theda Bara had recently played the part in a film version in 1915.

/ˈθiːdə ˈbærə/THEE-də BAR-ə; July 29, 1885 – April 7, 1955), born Theodosia Burr Goodman, was an American silent film actress – one of the most popular of her era, and one of cinema's earliest sex symbols. Her femme fatale roles earned her the nickname "The Vamp" (short for vampire).
Theodosia Burr Goodman was born in the Avondale section of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was Bernard Goodman (1853–1936), a prosperous Jewish tailor born in Poland. Her mother, Pauline Louise de Coppett (1861–1957), was born in Switzerland. Bernard and Pauline married in 1882.
Theda's siblings were a boy, Marque (1888–1954) and a girl, Esther (1897–1965), who also became a film actress as Lori Bara and married Francis W. Getty of London in 1920.
The origin of Bara's stage name is disputed; The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats says it came from director Frank Powell, who learned Theda had a relative named Barranger. When versatile, young Karen James refuses to be discouraged by her rejection by producer Rodney Lloyd, Minnie rings out loudly and clearly. Phineas Aloysius Higby, who was a magician before he was called to Actor's Heaven, begs to be allowed to go earthward to help Karen and is finally assigned the job. Phineas rents a room in the theatrical boarding house run by Madam Della, an ex-prima donna who has never gotten over it. Karen also lives there, as well as David Randall, a young artist. David conceals his love for Karen because he believes she loves Paul Blake, an advertising writer who pretends, for Karen's sake, that he has playwriting ambitions. Phineas befriends Karen and David and accompanies them to another audition for Rodney Lloyd, who rejects Karen again but is entranced by Phineas' magic and tries to sign him up. Phineas consults Sir Henry Bushnell, head man of Actors' Heaven, and secures his permission to pretend to be a producer in order to encourage Karen. Phineas then promises to produce a show to be written by Paul (who can't write)and to star Karen and her friends, Tiny , Rosie, Susie , Kay , Barbara, and others, all theatrically ambitious, talented kids now working in a department store. David dreams up several production numbers, and even Madam Della's maid, Theresa, who also sings in a night club, and her accompanist and agent, Cliff , join in with a hot number of their own. But complications arise and, before long, Phineas has created many problems and soon has Minnie the Bell ringing constantly and boisterously.

She also appeared as Juliet in a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The origin of Bara's stage name is disputed; The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats says it came from director Frank Powell, who learned Theda had a relative named Barranger. In promoting the 1917 film Cleopatra, Fox Studio publicists noted that the name was an anagram of Arab death, and her press agents claimed inaccurately that she was "the daughter of an Arab sheik and a French woman, born in the Sahara." In 1917 the Goodman family legally changed its surname to Bara.
Bara is often cited as the first sex symbol of the movies. She was well known for wearing very revealing costumes in her films. Such outfits were banned from Hollywood films after the Production Code started in 1930, and then was more strongly enforced in 1934.
It was popular at that time to promote an actress as mysterious, with an exotic background. The studios promoted Bara with a massive publicity campaign, billing her as the Egyptian-born daughter of a French actress and an Italian sculptor. They claimed she had spent her early years in the Sahara Desert under the shadow of the Sphinx, then moved to France to become a stage actress. (In fact, Bara had never been to Egypt or France.)

I was totally intrigued by this snippet of footage showing Theda Bara in 'Cleopatra' (1917) -- the gentle undulating of her body in gossamer gilt mesh draperies is mesmerising. The actress was over thirty when she played the role and so, it seems, could more completely give herself to a mature expression of the character of the Egyptian queen -- well, to the character of public mythology. This is the only known fragment of this famous silent film to exist, the rest having been lost. And I was also intrigued hearing her in a 1936 radio interview speaking about silent film acting technique and of working in 'Cleopatra' - her speaking voice is unexpectedly dignified and matronly, which in fact is hardly surprising as she was then in her fifties. `A Fool There Was (1914) is the film that made Theda Bara a star, creating the term `vamp to describe a hypnotically alluring woman, and coining the now famous quote: `Kiss me, my fool! (often misquoted as `Kiss me, you fool).
Theda plays a heedless homewrecker - credited only as `The Vampire - who casually destroys the marriage of a successful diplomatic who seems powerless to escape her.
It was based on a successful stage play, which itself was based on an 1897 poem by Rudyard Kipling, which began:

The actress was over thirty when she played the role and so, it seems, could more completely give herself to a mature expression of the character of the Egyptian queen -- well, to the character of public mythology. This is the only known fragment of this famous silent film to exist, the rest having been lost.
