Angela Merkel makes 14 year old Palestinian refugee girl cry on TV, explains why she'll be deported A video has gone viral on social media of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a high school gymnasium bringing a teenage Palestinian refugee to tears after telling her that she is not welcome in Germany. What comes next is cringe inducing. Merkel tries to “hug” the teen named Reem Sahwil, 14, then settles on awkwardly stroking her arm. Thus, the hashtag #merkelstreichelt (Merkel strokes) along with images mocking the petting chancellor ensued. The Guardian subtitled the video into English, which was filmed today at an event entitled, the “Good life in Germany” at a school in Rostock, Germany. Reem is one of many children at the forum and explained to Merkel that her family is facing deportation. They arrived in Germany from a Lebanese refugee camp four years ago, reported The Guardian. “I have goals like anyone else. I want to study like them … it’s very unpleasant to see how others can enjoy life, and I can’t myself,” Reem told the chancellor. In response an unmoved Merkel said, “I understand what you are saying, nonetheless politics is hard sometimes. There are thousands and thousands more in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. And if we say ‘you can all come here,’ ‘you can all come over from Africa,’ we can’t cope with that.” To this, the young Reem burst into tears. A classmates consoled her. Merkel carried on with her talk. Then noticing the crying girl she approached, “Oh come here.You did so well,” she said gesturing for Reem. “I don’t think it’s about doing it well, Mrs. Chancellor, but about this being a very wearing situation for her,” added a moderator. Merkel snapped back. “I know this is a very wearing situation, but I just want to give her a hug now,” the chancellor said, turning again to Reem—now patting her arm, “because we don’t want to put you into such a situation, because this is hard for you.”

The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility hosts a lecture by Alessandro Petti and Sandi Hilal entitled "Spatial Ordering of Exile: The Architecture of Palestinian Refugee Camps." The lecture is followed by a roundtable discussion with Ilana Feldman (Associate Professor of Anthropology, History and International Affairs at George Washington University), Carin Kuoni (Director of Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School for Public Engagement) and Ann Stoler (Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research). Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti are both architects and researchers in urbanism, members of DAAR, an architectural office and an artistic residency program that combines conceptual speculations and architectural interventions. DAAR was awarded the Price Claus Prize for Architecture, the Foundation for Arts initiative Grant, shortlisted for the Iakov Chernikhov Prize and showed in various biennales and museums around the world. Alongside research and practice, Hilal and Petti are engaged in critical pedagogy, they are founding members of Campus in Camps an experimental educational program by Al Quds University hosted by the Phoenix Center in Dheisheh refugee camp Bethlehem. More recently Petti and Hilal co-authored with Eyal Weizman the book Architecture after Revolution (Sternberg, Berlin 2014) an invitation to rethink today’s struggles for justice and equality not only from the historical perspective of revolution, but also from that of a continued struggle for decolonization. The event is part of the 2014-15 Lecture Series "Rethinking Refugee Spaces: Architecture, Design, and Politics" and is co-sponsored by Global Studies, Vera List Center for Art and Politics and Bard College.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing criticism over her treatment of a young refugee who had been threatened with deportation. At a forum for young people, Mrs Merkel tells the Palestinian girl, Reem, that not all migrants can stay in Germany and "some will have to go home". Mrs Merkel then strokes Reem, who is now crying, on the back. Reem had said she and her family had been waiting four years to gain permanent residency in Germany. Within hours of the video being broadcast, the term #Merkelstreichelt (Merkel strokes) trended on Twitter. In the video, Reem tells Mrs Merkel that her family was told they would have to return to a camp in Lebanon imminently - only to receive a last-minute temporary German residency permit. "I would like to go to university," says Reem, in fluent German. "It's really very hard to watch how other people can enjoy life and you yourself can't. I don't know what my future will bring." Mrs Merkel replied that "politics can be tough", adding: "You are an extremely nice person but you also know that there are thousands and thousands of people in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon." Germany could not manage if all wanted to move there, she said. Germany says it expects 400,000 asylum applications by the end of 2015 - more than double the amount if received in 2014. The right-wing Pegida group has marched against what it calls the Islamisation of Germany, and the country's newest political party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), has called for tighter immigration control. "The mistakes in the government's refugee policies can't be patted away," Katrin Goering-Eckardt, a Green Party MP, said. "This week has been fantastic for German public diplomacy. All that was missing was Merkel making refugee children cry," the Belarus-born writer Evgeny Morozov said.

As the Chancellor went on to talk defend her government’s asylum policy and push to speed up the decision process, she noticed that Reem had started crying and abruptly broke off. “Oh, come,” she said, walking over to the teenager and starting to stroke her shoulder. “You did really great.” Telling the presenter that she wanted to comfort Reem, she told her that she knew she was having a “difficult time”. Ms Merkel’s efforts seemed to have little effect as the student continued to cry while the television cameras zoomed in. Footage of the encounter has gone viral in Germany, sparking the Twitter trends #merkelstreichelt, meaning “Merkel strokes” and #Empathie (empathy). Viewers slammed Ms Merkel’s administration as a “Regierung ohne Empathie”, meaning “government without empathy” and claimed the Chancellor had “failed as a human on all fronts”. Providing some cash, sometimes intervention with the Kafkaesque problems they face at the Syria-Lebanon Masnaa border crossing and often contacting Lebanese General Security regarding those agencies seemingly ever changing requirements and unannounced restrictions. Problems for arrivals from Syria trying to reach European embassies in Lebanon have recently been compounded as the government imposes yet more strict measures for their entry and forward movement to Europe. SSSP has been able to provide some housing in South Beirut while Palestinians from Syria wait to receive their visas-usually a six day process- and then provides transportation to Beirut airport as the Palestinians seek a new life in Europe, pending return to their own country, Palestine. What is happening this week to Palestinians at Syrian checkpoints between Damascus and the Turkish border has alarmed the Palestinian community here and their supporters. The reason is that once a Palestinian refugee arrives in Europe, the person can apply for refugee status also for a child, parent or spouse, who, for various reasons were forced to stay behind in Syria. After some months, the European country normally issues visas in favor of the family members so they can travel and the family is reunited. So far so good…but perhaps no longer.
