Significant sacrifices of blood, materiel and treasure were made by the Republic of China in drawing off Japanese forces and buying time for the Allies to overcome the enemy in respective theaters of operation. Standing alone in the early years of the War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945), the ROC was later supported by the U.S., U.K. and USSR in its eight-year struggle. The ROC under Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek played an integral role in securing an Allied victory in WWII and setting the peoples of the world on the path to peace.

Taiwan after WW2 | US Army & Republic of China Army Prepare for War with China | Documentary
About the History of the Republic of China:
The History of the Republic of China begins after the Qing dynasty in 1912, when the formation of the Republic of China as a constitutional republic put an end of 4,000 years of Imperial rule.
In 1928, the Republic was nominally unified under the Kuomintang - Chinese Nationalist Party - after the Northern Expedition, and was in the early stages of industrialization and modernization when it was caught in the conflicts among the Kuomintang government, the Communist Party of China, (founded 1921), which was converted into a nationalist party, local warlords and the Empire of Japan. Most nation-building efforts were stopped during the full-scale Second Sino-Japanese War (aka the War of Resistance) against Japan from 1937 to 1945, and later the widening gap between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party made a coalition government impossible, causing the resumption of the Chinese Civil War, in 1946, shortly after the Japanese surrender to the Americans and the Western Allies in September 1945.
A series of political, economic and military missteps led to the Kuomintang's defeat and its retreat to Taiwan (formerly Formosa) in 1949, where it established an authoritarian one-party state continuing under Generalissimo / President Chiang Kai-shek, that considered itself to be the continuing sole legitimate ruler of all of China, referring to the Communist government or "regime" as illegitimate, a so-called "Peoples' Republic of China" declared in Beijing (Peking) by Mao Tse Tung in 1949, as "mainland China", "Communist China", or "Red China". Although supported for many years, even decades by many nations especially with the support of the United States who established a 1954 Mutual Defense treaty, as the decades passed, since political liberalization began in the late 1960s, the Peoples' Republic of China was able after a constant yearly campaign in the United Nations to finally get approval in 1971, to take the seat for "China" in the General Assembly, and more importantly, be seated as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council. After recovering from this shock of rejection by the world community, after the liberalization at home in the late 1970s from the Nationalist authoritarian government and following the death of Chiang Kai-shek, the Republic of China has transformed itself into a multiparty, representative democracy on Taiwan and even given more representation to those native Taiwanese, whose ancestors predate the 1949 mainland evacuation.
Taiwan–United States military relations:
In 1949, the Republic of China Armed Forces and the Kuomintang suffered a major defeat in the Chinese Civil War, forcing the Government of the Republic of China to relocate to Taiwan. This allowed the Communist Party of China to declare the establishment of a new Chinese state: the People's Republic of China. As the Kuomintang was establishing a "provisional" base in Taiwan, the party began to plan and threaten counterattacks on the mainland, hoping to retake the Chinese mainland.
With the fall of the mainland, the United States largely wrote off the Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-Shek as incompetent, corrupt leaders who deservedly lost and was prepared to grant diplomatic recognition to the People's Republic of China. All of this changed rapidly when the People's Republic of China intervened in the Korean War, which ruined any chance of normalizing relations with Washington for years. The victorious Battle of Guningtou by the Republic of China forces against the communist forces helped to boost morale in the Republic of China Army and diminished any chance by the communist forces to take Taiwan. Subsequently, the United States Seventh Fleet started to patrol the Taiwan Straits. By the 1950s, Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty was signed and US provided Military Assistance and Support to the Republic of China forces. The US Army maintained a garrison force in Taiwan until its withdrawal in 1979. The Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty was replaced by Taiwan Relations Act after 1979.

Due to the corrupt tyrannic rule by Chinese communists, many mainland Chinese have already abandoned Communist China and embraced Republic of China (ROC) as their true motherland. They recognized that there is only one legitimate China: Republic of China (currently based in Taiwan), since it's the only free and democratic China in this world.

Overview of Chinese history after 1949 revealed that the Chinese communist regime had destroyed the freedom and democracy on Chinese mainland established by Republic of China before 1949.
Republic of China retreated to Taiwan after 1949 in the midst of Chinese civil war after being defeated by Chinese communist insurgents.
The Chinese communist regime established People's Republic of China in 1949. It phased out all freedoms and democracy on Chinese mainland, and established one party communist dictatorship. It instituted red terror, committed systematic murders of opponents, against intellectuals, against "Capitalist" or "Class enemies", suppressed freedom of speech and press, in a violent struggle to create a "Communist state". Failure in collectivization and Great Leap forward led to Great Famine resulting in over 30 millions starvations.
Cultural Revolutions (1965-1975) further instituted state violence by the red guards against opponents to Mao, as well as to intellectuals, teachers, and even to family members. Chinese culture was destroyed, including Chinese Confucian values and traditions, in pursue of only "Maoist socialist values". Chinese historical monuments, culture relics, and Chinese religions were destroyed by the Chinese communists in a violent struggle to create a "Communist Utopia Culture".
After 1979, the Open-door Policy permitted Economic reform by Deng Xiao Peng, managed to allow mainland China to develop rapidly. But in 1989, when students took to Tiananmen in Beijing to protest against corruption and to ask for democracy, the Chinese communists fired at the students, killing many.
State violence and human rights abuse continued to be carried by the Chinese communists, notably against Falunggong practitioners, including Organ Harvesting.
With the exposure of the internet, many Mainland Chinese had already "awakened" and were horrified by the terrors and crimes against humanity committed by the Chinese communist regime against its own people.
Many mainland Chinese had revealed the historical truth and debunked the lies and distortion of truth by the Chinese communist regime.
With these truth, the Chinese communist regime had already lost its legitimacy to rule mainland China. With further economic demise of Chinese mainland, social unrests, rampant corruption, unwillingness to pursue political reform, it will be inevitable that the Chinese communist regime be overthrown by its own people. The Chinese communist regime will collapse.
Therefore, it might make sense for Republic of China regime (based in Taiwan) to retake Chinese mainland, or to return back to Chinese mainland, bringing freedom and democracy for all Chinese.
That's the future for China's Democracy.

Travel video about destination Taiwan.
Taiwan, the Beautiful Island or, ‘Ilha Formosa’: a land of gods, spirits and temples - an island at the end of a rainbow! This south east Asian island is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Formosa Strait that at its narrowest point is a hundred and thirty kilometres wide. Taipei is a pulsating metropolis in the north of the island in which emperors’ treasures and chaotic traffic highlight both industrial strength and a Chinese way of life. In the old town district of Wan Hua is the city’s oldest and most precious Buddhist temple of Lungshan Szu, the Dragon Mountain Temple. The Sun Yi Sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the centenary of the founder of the Republic of China. His efforts brought about the abdication of the last emperor and the birth of the Republic Of China. The Confucius Temple is a place of contemplation and is a replica of the Temple Of Qu Fu, Qu Fu having been the home town of Confucius. This silent place is one of five temples in Taiwan dedicated to the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius, the founder of a religion that even today has many followers. The past importance of the former Taiwanese capital of Tainan is indicated by the city’s many temple complexes that contain an abundance of sacred works of art. Religion still plays a central role in the daily life of the people and the Tien Gon Temple is the most important temple in Taiwan. Taiwan is an island full of magical charm, fascinating works of art and breathtaking natural wonders. The legacy of Confucius mixed with the bright hope of the future. A symbiosis of industrialisation and Chinese tradition. The success of capitalism confirmed by the eternal words, “Made in Taiwan“!

http://www.expedia.com/Taipei.d180030.Destination-Travel-Guides
Taipei is the glittering capital of Taiwan, and one of the hottest travel destinations in all of Asia. When you visit this thriving city, you’ll find collections of stunning futuristic buildings interspersed with ancient Chinese temples and traditions.
One of these temples, Longshan, is located in Wanhua, the city’s oldest neighborhood. This is where you come to find good fortune, good health, and spiritual advice of all sorts. Once you’ve attained the guidance and wisdom you may not have realized you sought, head to 228 Peace Park, where you will find the memorial to the 1949 uprisings that eventually led to Taiwan’s independence.
Don’t worry about getting around the city; the Taipei Rapid Transit System, or MRT, will take you just about anywhere you need to go. Hop on it to pay a visit to the National Palace Museum, where you’ll find a giant collection of Chinese art and artifacts. There’s over half a million pieces related to ancient Chinese royalty here, and you can spend days exploring them all.
To plan out your next move, make your way to Taipei 101. This is one of the world’s tallest buildings, and you can soar to the top for a breathtaking view of the city and pick out the next place you’ll visit. Do you see Elephant Mountain? It’s not far from the downtown area, and it’s a short climb to the top for another look at Taipei. Keep up with the nature theme and make your stop the Taipei Zoo, where you’ll meet the largest menagerie of animals in Asia.
Cap off a day of Taipei sightseeing and adventure at Shilin Night Market, where you can join the locals in finding that next great meal or landing a spectacular bargain.

Taipei is the capital of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Situated at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei is located on the Tamsui River; it is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Keelung, a port city on the Pacific Ocean. It lies in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border .
The most important places to visit in Taipei are: Yamingshan National Park, Beitou Hot Springs, Building Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, Martyr Shrine, National Palace Museum, Longshan temple, Taipei 101 tower and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. http://www.expedia.com/Tainan-and-vicinity.d6177060.Destination-Travel-Guides
The city of Tainan rises from the southwestern coastal plains of Taiwan, and is often
called The Birthplace of Taiwan.
In 1624, Dutch traders established a fort on the sandy peninsula Anping. Wander the
fort’s ramparts and the nearby ruins of a merchant house held together by banyan roots.
Closer to the city center rises Chihkan Tower, Taiwan’s first official seat of power.
Today, the tower is the keeping place of many of the city’s earliest records and treasures.
With over 2000 temples and shrines, Tainan is also known as The Kyoto of Taiwan.
Highlights include the Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple and the Confucian Temple.
Although Tainan ceded its political power to Taipei over a century ago, the city remains a
powerhouse in one of life’s most important aspects, food! Forget chic restaurants, the
best food here is found on the streets and the city is often called The City of Snacks.
One of the best places to sample Tainan specialties, like its legendary oyster omelets, is at
its night markets. Tainan offers over two dozen night markets, but none quite compare to
the sheer size, color and energy of the city’s favorite, the Flower Night Market.
When it’s time to work off all that food, the city has plenty of places to stretch out, such
as Tainan Park and Taijiang National Park.
Locals love to say, “Taipei is Taiwan’s pocket, but Tainan, is the country’s heart.”

http://www.expedia.com/Kaohsiung-and-vicinity.d6177725.Destination-Travel-Guides
Over the last three centuries, Kaohsiung has grown from a humble trading village, into Taiwan’s busiest harbor. As a shipping and industrial powerhouse, Kaohsiung has had a gritty past. But today, a fresh wind is blowing, creating a modern, creative, and highly livable city.
Just a short ferry ride from the city’s downtown is the narrow island of Cijin. This district serves as the harbor’s natural breakwater, and has been home to Kaohsiung’s fishing families for generations. Visit Tianhou Temple, dedicated to the goddess Matzu, the protector of sailors and fishermen. Follow dramatic coastal paths and climb to the lighthouse and fort for commanding views.
Wherever you go in Kaohsiung, you’ll be reminded that this is a city with water in its veins. The Love River runs right through the heart of the city. Once little more than a neglected drain, the river’s transformation reflects the city’s evolution into a place awakening to its natural assets.
But if the Love River is the city’s mirror, Lotus Lake is the city’s soul. From the remains of the Old Wall of Fengshan, explore the lake in a clockwise direction, visiting the Dragon and Tiger Pavilion, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, and an 80ft statue of Xuan Wu.
After a busy day with the gods, follow your nose to the Liouho Night Market. Drift along with the human tide, through a canyon of neon-lit stalls serving up all the fruits of the sea. So what are you waiting for, dive into Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s best kept secret by the sea.

By serendipity I was at the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial on Sunday, October 4th, 2015. A fellow came up to me and told... "there's going to be a performance!". I'd seen the dozens of military buses parked round the Memorial. Quite unusual. So... it seems this was perhaps a dress rehearsal of the marching band and soldiers for National Day, October 10th. Quite impressive. These young lads with bayonets and tight-laced stomping boots. A flashback in my mind of that rag-tag, perhaps "villainous", soldiers who arrived in Taiwan in 1949.

Lyrics:
Do you wanna build a dynasty?
Come on let's go and slay
It started out with Qin and then
Han and Tang
Chinese dynasties are great
The Tang were really peaceful
The Qin were not
and Confucianism came from Han
Do you wanna build a dynasty?
It doesn't have to be dy-NASTY
Go away Ellen
Okay bye...
First were the Qin and Han and Tang
then Song
came along
Everything went wrong
Sui's next
freakin yes
This dynasty didn't last long
Listen up
Don't fret
Wipe your tears
Don't forget
Sui only lasted 40 years!
Dynasties
fabulous thee
Yuan came after Sui
What's up next?
That isn't for me
What could it be?
We’ve covered Qin, Han and Tang
Then we sang about Song and Sui
Our knowledge of Yuan can’t be broken
Now there’s three more
Don’t you cry
So Yuan is in our heart
and now there’s Ming and Qing
From this day on, the Republic of China reigns
Now you know these by heart
No matter what they say
They’ll be there in your heart
Always

On June 2, 2015, the Taiwan Democracy Project at Stanford's Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) hosted a special panel session featuring the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ma Ying-jeou. President Ma spoke via live video feed to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the long history of the U.S.-R.O.C. relationship. Following his prepared remarks, the president engaged in a question-and-answer session with the audience and a distinguished panel of leading Stanford faculty and fellows, chaired and moderated by the former Secretary of Defense of the United States, William J. Perry.
---
About the Speaker
Ma Ying-jeou has served as the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since May 2008. As president, Ma Ying-jeou has worked to address the repercussions of the global financial crisis, stepping up efforts to bring about a more diversified industrial structure and to jump-start new engines for economic growth in Taiwan. President Ma has also attached great importance to promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction, which has helped Taiwan’s energy efficiency to exceed two percent. In addition, his administration worked to craft a response to regional economic integration, successfully negotiating the landmark Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with the People's Republic of China in 2010. President Ma's creative diplomacy has brought a significant improvement in cross-Strait relations while putting an end to a long and vituperative standoff between the two sides in the diplomatic sphere.
---

The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military arm of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the de facto armed forces of the People's Republic of China, consisting of land, sea, strategic missile and air forces. The PLA was established on August 1, 1927 which is celebrated annually as "PLA Day". The People's Liberation Army's insignia consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for "Eight One", referring to August 1 (Chinese: 八一), the date of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising.
The PLA is the world's largest military force, with approximately 3 million members, and has the world's largest (active) standing army, with approximately 2.25 million members. The PLA comprises five main service branches, consisting of the PLA Ground Force, PLA Navy (PLAN), PLA Air Force (PLAAF), Second Artillery Corps (strategic missile force), and the PLA Reserve Force.
Military service is compulsory, in theory, for all men who attain the age of 18; women may register for duty in the medical, veterinary, and other technical services at ages as young as 14. However, a draft in China has never been enforced due to large numbers of volunteers from China's huge population. Demobilized servicemen are carried in a ready reserve, which is reinforced by a standby reserve of veterans and by the militia.
The PLA is formally under the command of the Central Military Commission of the CPC; there is also an identical commission in the government, but it has no clear independent functions. The Ministry of National Defense, which operates under the State Council, does not exercise any authority over the PLA and is far less powerful than the Central Military Commission (CMC). The ministry assures continuing CPC control over the armed forces, and its primary role is that of a liaison office with foreign militaries. The political and military leadership have made a concerted effort to create a professional military force restricted to national defense and to the provision of assistance in domestic economic construction and emergency relief. This conception of the role of the PLA requires the promotion of specialized officers who can understand modern weaponry and handle combined arms operations. Troops around the country are stationed in seven military regions and more than 20 military districts.
Chairman Hu Jintao has defined the missions of the PLA as:
- Consolidate the ruling status of the Communist Party
- Help ensure China's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and domestic security in order
- to continue national development
- Safeguard China's expanding national interests
- Help maintain World Peace
