The incident happened when ISIL-affiliated terrorists attacked several checkpoints in Sheikh Zuweid town. They also clashed with Egyptian forces. Security sources say the terrorists planted bombs along a road between Sheikh Zuweid and an army camp to prevent the movement of army supplies and reinforcements. Meanwhile, two explosions have been heard in the town of Rafah forcing the army to close the border crossing. Egypt has deployed more troops to the area. Egyptian officials say they have launched strikes on terrorists using F-16 fighter jets. The Israeli army has also sent more forces to the Egyptian border.

Egypt’s military spokesperson claimed 98 militants were killed during a five-day counter-insurgency operation dubbed “Right of the Martyr”, in North Sinai. The operation involves the use of both ground, air and naval forces. It follows a deadly attack against the military in July, and is meant to secure the restive peninsula, and curb the threat of the so-called Islamic State. The Islamic State branch in Sinai, however, launched a series of deadly attacks against the Egyptian army yesterday. During one of these attacks the group claims to have used a car bomb against a military convoy in Rafah. The Egyptian military responded by carrying out several airstrikes against the group. The Islamic State released several pictures of the attack, also depicting the use of an advanced anti-tank missile, which the group used on multiple occasions during the past months. These attacks continue to raise concerns as to the effectiveness of Egyptian counter-insurgency operations, which have regularly been launched since a military intervention ousted the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

NEGEV REGION, ISRAEL — Militants in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula fired rockets into southern Israel on Friday in an incident that caused no casualties but appeared to be connected to fighting between Islamist insurgents and Egyptian security forces, Reuters said.
Islamic State’s Egypt affiliate, Sinai Province, claimed in a statement on Twitter by supporters that it had launched three Grad rockets toward “occupied Palestine”.
The group said it acted in retaliation for what it feels is Israeli support for Egyptian military.
An Israeli military source said the rockets had been fired from Sinai.
Israeli officials said they found pieces from two rockets in an open area in Israel’s Negev region. No casualties or damage were reported.
Dozens of people have been killed in the past few days of clashes and airstrikes in the region, according to Reuters.
It was possible the rocket attack was linked to fighting in the Sinai, the military source told Reuters, where militants launched their biggest coordinated attack in years against Egyptian security forces on Wednesday.
Militants, including those from Sinai Province - formerly known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdi - have fired rockets into Israel from Sinai on other occasions in the past.

Egypt’s interior ministry says a police captain and a policeman died of their wounds after unknown assailants shot them. A terrorist group affiliated to Daesh has claimed responsibility for the killings. The Egyptian forces frequently fall victim to terrorist attacks in the Sinai Peninsula. A few days ago, three soldiers were killed and over a dozen were injured in a car bomb explosion in the north of the region. Egypt has recently stepped up its crackdown on the rising militancy in the Sinai. Most of the terrorist attacks are blamed on the Daesh franchise operating in the area.

The U.S. military is shipping more troops and more equipment to Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula after an ISIS attack that injured four American troops there. In the last week, the Pentagon authorized the shipment of additional high-caliber weapons, surveillance towers, Bradley fighting vehicles, and medical equipment to bolster security for the 1,600 U.S. and UN troops tasked with ensuring Egypt and Israel abide by the 1979 peace treaty, The Daily Beast has learned. Much of that equipment is now en route in the northern edge of the peninsula. An additional 75 American troops have also been given orders to head to Sinai.

Egypt’s military spokesman says the dead are all soldiers. Several others were also injured in Saturday’s attack. Terrorists used rocket-propelled grenades to launch their attack near the town of Sheikh Zuweid. The army says it's killed nearly 60 terrorists in operations and arrested four suspects. The country is facing threats from militants, including ISIL-affiliated extremists, in the restive region. Earlier this month, 70 people, most of them soldiers, were killed in a series of militant attacks.

Sinai, Egypt Travel Video - Occupied by Israel from 1967 to 1982, and sharing more with Asia than Africa, Sinai is the most atypical part of Egypt.
Settled by Bronze Age communities, attracted by Sinai’s copper and turquoise deposits, and later by Pharaonic mining parties, Sinai is most celebrated in history for the Exodus of Israelites towards the Promised Land. Though disputed by historians, Jews, Christians and Muslims believe Gebel Mousa (Mt Sinai) marks the spot where Moses received the Ten Commandments. It remains an important pilgrimage site.
If the interior belongs to God, Sinai’s coast belongs to mammon. Vast resorts fringe the peninsula, attracting biblical numbers of sun-worshippers, attracted by blue skies and world-class diving.
Sinai, Egypt Travel Video - Despite high tourist revenue, the indigenous Bedouin of the Sinai see little investment in their own communities. In recent years their resentment, encouraged by fundamentalists with their own agenda, has led to violence. Tourism continues unabated, however.

The number of tourists visiting Egypt's Sinai region have fallen once again - as militants wage war against government security forces.
Now efforts are underway to try and bring visitors back to the area.
Their message is clear.
Backed by campaign group "Sinai is Safe," 60 walkers are embarking on a two-day trek to the top of Mount Abbas, which looks out over Egypt's southern stretch of land.
They want to show that it's a safe place to visit - despite an ongoing militant campaign north of the tourist destinations.
That hasn't bothered Mary Girgis from Cairo.
''I came because I love the Sinai and I love hiking and I wanted to see this part of Egypt. Some people were worried about me, saying why are you going there, you're crazy. But I said no, Sinai is the most beautiful place, we have to go, if we (Egyptians) don't go then who will go? So I came,'' says Mary.
The most recent attack - in which 33 security personnel died near Al Arish on 24 October - prompted the government to declare a three-month state of emergency in parts of northern Sinai.
It's left many tourists - both Egyptian and foreign - wary of visiting the once busy tourist sites of South Sinai that include the World Heritage site and national park, St Katherine Protectorate.
The 4,350 square metre protectorate was established in 1996 and boasts a wealth of historical sites sacred to Islam, Christianity and Judaism including the St Katherine's Monastery, Mount Sinai and the Rock of Moses.
It's also more than 210 miles (350 kilometres) south of last month's attack - with local guides arguing it's completely safe for visitors.
''We want to tell everyone not to be afraid, come and see for yourself," says Sheikh Ahmed, a Bedouin Mountain Guide from the Jabaleya Tribe.
"We guarantee the safety of everyone in this area. We the tribes of St Katherine's and South Sinai guarantee the safety and security of everyone here. Any person, especially Europeans or Americans and other nationalities should come and see the place for themselves. This place is safe, nothing happens here.''
But violence has reached further south.
In February this year, an attack on a South Korean tourist bus near Taba killed two South Koreans and their Egyptian driver.
And as a consequence fifteen European countries issued a travel warning covering the entire Sinai Peninsula.
That, coupled with a serious drop-off in the number of people visiting Egypt since the 2011 revolution, has hit the country's tourism industry hard.
More than 14.7 million tourists visited Egypt in 2010, dropping to 9.8 million in 2011 and shrinking again to 9.5 million last year.
It's also done nothing to help Egypt's battered economy.
According to government figures, tourism contributes 11.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 14.4 percent of foreign currency revenues to the country's economy.
"We are facing challenges ahead. We have a war on terrorism. However the market (international tourism market) indeed wants Egypt back (on the tourism map). People wanted to come to Egypt for the last four years and eventually tourists will come back to Egypt," says Walid El Batouty, from the World Federation of Tourists Guide Associations.
He continues: "South of Sinai is completely safe. The government were very successful in getting the native bedouins in South Sinai to share with the government in securing tourism. They had a mutual interest in securing tourism. But in the north of Sinai, we never had tourists going to El Arish (North Sinai) and it was never on our tourism map. The government had plans to develop North Sinai. However these development plans now will stop for some time."
St Katherine's has been particularly hard hit by the tourism crisis.

wn.com/'Sinai Is Safe' Campaign Launched To Help Boost Tourist Numbers

LEADIN:
Egyptian officals are hoping the country's tourism industry is on the road to recovery after several difficult years following the country's 2011 revolution.
But after a deadly militant attack killed 30 soldiers in northern Sinai last week, there are renewed fears that tourists may choose to stay away.
STORYLINE:
These tourists are visiting Egypt's most famous tourist attraction, the anicent Pyramids of Giza.
In the past, the plateau used to be crowded with tourists from all over the world, but today, a fraction of those numbers are visiting the wonders.
From a high of more than 14 million tourists in 2010, only around 9.6 million came to Egypt in 2011.
And in 2013, 9.5 million tourists came, according to Tourism Ministry figures.
Since the uprising in 2011 triggered a period of prolonged social unrest, many of Egypt's hotels, beaches and famed ancient sites have been largely deserted.
But with a new President and a growing economy, it's hoped tourists will return.
These visitors are certainly delighted with their trip.
"The country is amazing and there is no problem. It's really good because you can see everything with security and they are really nice," says Marta Gonzales, visiting from Spain.
Guillermo Romero has travelled all the way from Argentina to visit Egypt.
He says: "It's good, really good."
The tourism industry is the second largest sector of Egypt's economy, behind remittances from Egyptians working abroad.
So it is vital to revive it and bring much needed foreign currency into the country.
But Nagy Erian, vice chairman of the tourist hotels division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, warns a recovery will take time.
"The recovery of the tourism business will come in stages and not at once. The first problem we have to overcome is how to regain the trust of the foreign tourists from Europe and the United States, that Egypt is now safe."
Until last week, Egyptian officials were becoming increasingly optimistic of recovery, claiming the latest tourism figures show signs of improvement after a number of key countries lifted their travel warnings to the Sinai Peninsula.
But on Friday, a coordinated assault on an army checkpoint in the Sinai Penninsula killed 30 Egyptian troops, in the single deadliest attack on the military in decades.
Militants launched a complex assault on the checkpoint that involved a car bomb possibly detonated by a suicide attacker, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs placed to target rescuers.
Egypt declared a state of emergency and imposed an overnight curfew in the restive northern part of the peninsula following the attack.
Erian says terrorist attacks like this will have an adverse affect on Egypt's economy.
"What is happening around Egypt, in Syria and Yemen, and those terrorist groups has a great effect on the tourism industry and the Egyptian economy in general," he says.
On Saturday, vehicles carrying the bodies of the soldiers left Almaza military airport after a funeral possession was held inside the air base.
Walid El Batouty from the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations is asking tourists to remain calm.
He says the attacks, some nine miles (15 kilometres) from the northern Sinai city of el-Arish, in an area called Karm el-Qawadees, are far from any tourist hot-spots.
"The site of the attack is totally away from places visited by tourists, maybe some people are confused when they hear Sinai but this (the attack) happened in North Sinai, and all the tourism is in South Sinai which is totally secure."
He hopes last week's attacks will not put people off from visiting the country.
Last week, hundreds of visitors queued to catch a glimpse of an ancient statue of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses lit up by the early morning sunlight.

(Beirut, September 22, 2015) — The Egyptian military’s mass home demolitions and forced eviction of about 3,200 families in the Sinai Peninsula over the past two years violated international law.
Human Rights Watch has documented the government’s failure to provide adequately for residents during and after the evictions in North Sinai. Since July 2013, ostensibly to eliminate the threat of smuggling tunnels, the military has arbitrarily razed thousands of homes in a once-populated buffer zone on the border with the Gaza Strip, destroying entire neighborhoods and hundreds of hectares of farmland.

Violence continues in Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula. The country’s Interior Ministry says three soldiers have been killed in a car bomb explosion in the north of the region.
Sixteen soldiers were also injured in the bombing in Sinai’s provincial capital el-Arish. The car, parked on the side of the road, exploded when the soldiers' vehicle was passing by. ISIL’s franchise in Egypt has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack. The Egyptian forces have been fighting rising militancy in the Sinai over the past couple of years, which is mostly blamed on Daesh Takfiri terrorists operating in the area. The violence has killed many Egyptian forces and terrorists.

CAIRO: Two Egyptian policemen were killed in a roadside bombing in the Sinai Peninsula today, the interior ministry said, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.
The ministry said 16 policemen were also wounded when the bomb hit their convoy in the north of the peninsula, where security forces are struggling to quell an Islamist insurgency.
The Islamic State's Egypt affiliate said on Twitter that its militants had detonated the bomb as police tried to set up a checkpoint.
Militants loyal to the Islamic State group, which controls swathes of Iraq and Syria, have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen since the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Morsi's overthrow unleashed a sweeping crackdown on Islamists that left hundreds of protesters dead and thousands in prison.

A human rights group accuses the Egyptian military of harming civilians during its ongoing campaign against militant groups in the northern Sinai Peninsula.
Human Rights Watch says in the past two years, over 32-hundred families have been evicted from the northern Sinai near the Gaza border. It added that the army has razed farms and homes in the region under the excuse of destroying tunnels used by Palestinians to transfer supplies into the besieged Gaza Strip. It says the mass home demolitions and evictions are in violation of international law. Dozens of people, mostly Palestinians, have lost their lives during the destruction of tunnels, which has intensified since the 2013 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.

EL-GORAH, EGYPT — Six peacekeepers, including four U.S. soldiers, were wounded by improvised explosive devices in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Thursday.
Troops serving in the Multinational Force and Observers' peacekeeping mission were patrolling near their base in Sinai's el-Gorah town when their vehicles were hit by two roadside bombs, Reuters reported.
Four U.S. soldiers and two Fijians were wounded. The Pentagon said the injured soldiers were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Islamists inspired by the Islamic State have carried out a number of attacks in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula in recent months.
The Multinational Force and Observer was founded in 1981 to maintain the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

The governor of Egypt's South Sinai province visited survivors of a head-on collision between two tourist buses on Friday.
According to the state news agency MENA, 33 people died and 41 were injured in the crash, which happened on Friday morning about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh, in the Sinai Peninsula.
The buses were coming from opposite directions and collided head-on on the main road. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Victims were taken to Sharm el-Sheikh Hospital, as well as the main hospital in El Tur, the capital of South Sinai.
Ukrainian, Saudi and Yemeni citizens were said to be among the injured, some of whom remained in a critical condition.
General Khaled Fouda, the governor of South Sinai, said the drivers of the two buses were alive and that one had already been questioned about the incident.
About 13-thousand people were killed in traffic accidents in Egypt last year, a figure attributed to badly maintained roads and disregard of traffic laws.

history: After the 1956 Suez Crisis, Egypt agreed to the stationing of a United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Sinai to ensure all parties would comply with the 1949 Armistice Agreements.[9][10][11] In the following years there were numerous minor border clashes between Israel and its Arab neighbors, particularly Syria. In early November, 1966, Syria signed a mutual defense agreement with Egypt.[12] Soon thereafter, in response to Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) guerilla activity,[13][14] including a mine attack that left three dead,[15] the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) attacked the city of as-Samu in the Jordanian-occupied West Bank.[16] Jordanian units that engaged the Israelis were quickly beaten back.[17] King Hussein of Jordan criticized Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser for failing to come to Jordan's aid, and "hiding behind UNEF skirts".[18][19]
In May 1967, Nasser received false reports from the Soviet Union that Israel was massing on the Syrian border.[20] Nasser began massing his troops in the Sinai Peninsula on Israel's border (May 16), expelled the UNEF force from Gaza and Sinai (May 19), and took up UNEF positions at Sharm el-Sheikh, overlooking the Straits of Tiran.[21][22] UN Secretary-General U Thant proposed that the UNEF force be redeployed on the Israeli side of the border, but this was rejected by Israel despite U.S. pressure.[23] Israel reiterated declarations made in 1957 that any closure of the Straits would be considered an act of war, or a justification for war.[24][25] Nasser declared the Straits closed to Israeli shipping on May. 22--23. On 27 May he stated "Our basic objective will be the destruction of Israel. The Arab people want to fight." [26] On May 30, Jordan and Egypt signed a defense pact. The following day, at Jordan's invitation, the Iraqi army began deploying troops and armored units in Jordan.[27] They were later reinforced by an Egyptian contingent. On June 1, Israel formed a National Unity Government by widening its cabinet, and on June 4 the decision was made to go to war. Mountain of Fire: The Search for the True Mount Sinai (2002)
A documentary of the true story of two American adventurers who follow mysterious clues to find the true Mt. Sinai. The discoveries made by Bob Cornuke and Larry Williams will shock the world and rewrite history. Centuries of tradition place this holy mountain in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, but compelling evidence will show that this hallowed ground, where Moses was told to take the shoes of his feet before the burning bush, may actually be in the barren deserts of northwestern Saudi Arabia. Epic myth becomes burning truth on the Mountain of Fire.

The Six-Day War War of 1967, also known as the June War, 1967 Arab–Israeli War, or Third Arab–Israeli War, was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria.
Relations between Israel and its neighbours had never fully normalized following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and in the period leading up to June 1967 tensions became dangerously heightened. As a result, following the mobilisation of Egyptian forces along the Israeli border in the Sinai Peninsula, Israel launched a series of preemptive airstrikes against Egyptian airfields on June 5. The Egyptians, whose defensive infrastructure was in a poor state, were caught by surprise and virtually the entire Egyptian air force was destroyed with few Israeli losses, giving the Israelis air superiority. Simultaneously, the Israelis launched a ground offensive into the Gaza strip and through the northern and central routes of the Sinai, which again caught the Egyptians by surprise. After some initial resistance, the Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. On June 6 and 7, Israeli forces rushed westward in pursuit of the Egyptians whose retreat was disorganized and chaotic. The Israelis inflicted heavy losses on the retreating Egyptian forces. By June 7 the Israelis had reached the Suez Canal and had taken Sharm el Sheikh in the south of the peninsula. Conquest of the Sinai was completed on June 8 when Israeli forces reached the peninsula's western coast.
On June 5, Nasser had induced Syria and Jordan to begin attacks on Israel by using the initially confused situation to claim that Egypt had defeated the Israeli air strike. In the afternoon of June 5, Israel retaliated against Jordan by launching an offensive to encircle East Jerusalem. Initially, Israeli forces held back from moving into the Old City for a number of reasons including potentially negative international reaction. However, on June 7 the Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan, gave the order to attack. After heavy fighting, the Israelis completed the conquest of the city later that day. Also on June 7, Israeli forces seized the West Bank cities of Nablus and Bethlehem from the Jordanians. When King Hussein ordered the Jordanian forces to retreat across the River Jordan, the Israeli forces occupied the rest of the West Bank unopposed. Israel's retaliation against Syria on June 5 took the form of an air strike in the evening which destroyed two-thirds of the Syrian air force, giving the Israelis air superiority over the Syrians. On June 9, Dayan ordered a ground invasion of the Golan Heights. Despite an extensive fortifications system and heavy fighting, the Israelis broke through the Syrian first line of defense. By June 10, Israeli forces had taken the Golan plateau and the Syrians had retreated eastward behind the ceasefire "purple line".
On June 11, a ceasefire was signed. Arab casualties were far heavier than that of Israel: less than a thousand Israelis had been killed compared to over 20,000 from the Arab forces. Israel's military success was attributable to the element of surprise, an innovative and well executed battle plan and the poor quality and leadership of the Arab forces.[citation needed] Israel seized control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula (from Egypt), the West Bank and East Jerusalem (from Jordan) and the Golan Heights (from Syria). The area under Israeli control tripled, significantly contributing to the country's defensibility, as would be shown in the subsequent Yom Kippur War. Although Israeli morale and international prestige was greatly increased by the outcome of the war, the resulting displacement of civilian populations would have long-term consequences. 300,000 Palestinians fled the West Bank and about 100,000 Syrians left the Golan to become refugees. Across the Arab world, Jewish minority communities were expelled.

The Yom Kippur War, or October War , also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, was a war fought by the coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel from October 6 to 25, 1973. With the exception of isolated attacks on Israeli territory on 6 and 9 October, the military combat actions during the war took place on Arab territory, mostly in the Sinai and the Golan Heights. Egypt and Syria wanted to regain the Sinai and the Golan Heights respectively. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat wanted also to reopen the Suez Canal. Both did not plan to destroy Israel, although the Israeli leaders could not be sure of it.
The war began when the Arab coalition launched a joint surprise attack on Israeli positions in the Israeli-occupied territories on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, which also occurred that year during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights respectively, which had been captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Both the United States and the Soviet Union initiated massive resupply efforts to their respective allies during the war, and this led to a near-confrontation between the two nuclear superpowers.
The war began with a massive and successful Egyptian crossing of the Suez Canal. After crossing the cease-fire lines, Egyptian forces advanced virtually unopposed into the Sinai Peninsula. After three days, Israel had mobilized most of its forces and managed to halt the Egyptian offensive, settling into a stalemate. The Syrians coordinated their attack on the Golan Heights to coincide with the Egyptian offensive and initially made threatening gains into Israeli-held territory. Within three days, however, Israeli forces had managed to push the Syrians back to the pre-war ceasefire lines. They then launched a four-day counter-offensive deep into Syria. Within a week, Israeli artillery began to shell the outskirts of Damascus. As Egyptian president Anwar Sadat began to worry about the integrity of his major ally, he believed that capturing two strategic passes located deeper in the Sinai would make his position stronger during the negotiations. He therefore ordered the Egyptians to go back on the offensive, but the attack was quickly repulsed. The Israelis then counterattacked at the seam between the two Egyptian armies, crossed the Suez Canal into Egypt, and began slowly advancing southward and westward towards Suez in over a week of heavy fighting that inflicted heavy casualties on both sides.
On October 22 a United Nations-brokered ceasefire quickly unraveled, with each side blaming the other for the breach. By October 24, the Israelis had improved their positions considerably and completed their encirclement of Egypt's Third Army and the city of Suez. This development led to tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. As a result, a second ceasefire was imposed cooperatively on October 25 to end the war.
The war had far-reaching implications. The Arab World, which had been humiliated by the lopsided rout of the Egyptian–Syrian–Jordanian alliance in the Six-Day War, felt psychologically vindicated by early successes in the conflict. In Israel, despite impressive operational and tactical achievements on the battlefield, the war led to recognition that there was no guarantee it would always dominate the Arab states militarily. These changes paved the way for the subsequent peace process. The 1978 Camp David Accords that followed led to the return of the Sinai to Egypt and normalized relations—the first peaceful recognition of Israel by an Arab country. Egypt continued its drift away from the Soviet Union and left the Soviet sphere of influence entirely.

After the 1956 Suez Crisis, Egypt agreed to the stationing of a United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Sinai to ensure all parties would comply with the 1949 Armistice Agreements In the following years there were numerous minor border clashes between Israel and its Arab neighbors, particularly Syria. In early November, 1966, Syria signed a mutual defense agreement with Egypt. Soon thereafter, in response to PLO guerilla activity, including a mine attack that left three dead, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) attacked the village of as-Samu in the Jordanian-occupied West Bank. Jordanian units that engaged the Israelis were quickly beaten back King Hussein of Jordan criticized Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser for failing to come to Jordan's aid, and "hiding behind UNEF skirts".
wn.com/Israel Six Day War With Syria
The Six-Day War (Hebrew: מלחמת ששת הימים, Milhemet Sheshet Ha Yamim; Arabic: النكسة, an-Naksah, "The Setback" or حرب ۱۹٦۷, Ḥarb 1967, "War of 1967"), also known as the June War, 1967 Arab–Israeli War, or Third Arab–Israeli War, was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria.
