The Prirazlomnoye oil field in the Pechora Sea is located 60 km off the coast. Recoverable reserves of oil at the field are in excess of 70 million tonnes. The project operator and subsurface licence holder is Gazprom Neft Shelf LLC.
The Prirazlomnaya is a unique platform designed and built in Russia. The platform ensures the safety of all technical operations, including drilling, extraction, storage, preparation and loading of oil.
Extracted oil is held in tanks located in the platform caisson with its 3-metre thick concrete walls lined with a two-layer sheet of corrosion- and wear-resistant plated steel. The caisson's safety margin vastly exceeds actual loads. The platform’s "wet” oil storage method prevents oxygen from entering containers, thereby avoiding the formation of explosive mixtures.
The facility has a zero discharge system that prevents drilling and production waste from being dumped into the sea. Waste is pumped into a special absorption well or, if required, collected in containers and transported to shore for subsequent disposal.
Oil is loaded onto tankers by means of direct loading facilities located diagonally on opposite sides of the platform (south west and north east). Safety is a primary concern and oil is only loaded if all 30 of the required criteria are met simultaneously. The tanker loading line is equipped with an emergency shutoff system that has a maximum response time of seven seconds.

The Prirazlomnoye oil field is situated 60km off the coast in the Pechora Sea. Recoverable reserves of oil at the deposit are in excess of 70 million tonnes. Gazprom Neft Shelf LLC is the project operator and subsurface licence holder.
The Prirazlomnaya is a unique platform designed and built for Gazprom in Russia. The platform is intended for operation in extreme weather conditions, meets the strictest safety requirements and is capable of withstanding maximum ice loads.
Extracted oil is stored in tanks situated in the platform caisson. Its three metre concrete walls are covered with a two-layer sheet of corrosion- and wear-resistant plated steel. The caisson has a capacity of approximately 94,000 tonnes of oil. The caisson's safety margin vastly exceeds actual loads. The platform also makes use of so-called "wet storage" of oil which prevents oxygen from entering containers, thereby preventing the accumulation of hazardous explosive mixtures.
The platform has a zero discharge system that prevents drilling or production waste from being dumped into the sea. Waste is to be pumped into a special absorption well or, as necessary, collected in containers and transported to shore for subsequent disposal.

The indictment article against the activists of Greenpeace, who attacked Prirazlomnaya oilrig in the Pechora Sea, was reclassified from "Piracy" to "hooliganism." The adequate decision was made by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
Under "Piracy" article, the activists faced up to ten years in prison. The new article of indictment provides for a maximum imprisonment of seven years. Many believe, though, that the activists indeed acted like pirates as they attempted to board a ship without permission and disrupt drilling works. This could have caused a very serious damage to ecology and nature, which the activists say they are protecting.
The lawyers of Greenpeace activists called the move a positive development, but noted that "charges of disorderly conduct were just as absurd as charges of piracy, as the activists did not commit any act that would have roughly violated public order."

Greenpeace said on Tuesday Russia has no grounds to charge its activists with piracy, after Russian investigators said they would file charges against members of the environmental organisation who tried to climb onto an offshore drilling platform in the Arctic.
The activists are on a Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, which was seized last week by the Russian Coast Guard and towed Tuesday into a port near Murmansk.
It was unclear how many of the 30 activists on board face piracy charges, which carry a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of 500,000 roubles (about $15,500).
The Investigative Committee, Russia's federal investigative agency, said it would question all those who participated in the protest and detain the "more active" among them.
"I have no sensible explanation as to why this criminal case has been launched. In my opinion it is clear to all, even those who don't know much about legal practices, that the actions by our activists have nothing do with the case," said Dmitry Artamonov, coordinator of the Greenpeace mission in Murmansk.
Two activists tried to climb onto the Prirazlomnaya platform, which is owned by the state-controlled gas company Gazprom, on Thursday and others assisted from small inflatable boats.
The Greenpeace protest was aimed at calling attention to the environmental risks of drilling for oil in Arctic waters.
"For now, they (the Greenpeace activists) are being unlawfully held by Russian authorities. They have no means of communication with relatives, us or lawyers. Their means of communication were taken away from them and they are restricted in their movements aboard the ship," said Artomonov.
Greenpeace insists that Russia had no right under international law to board the ship.
One of the activists told The Associated Press that the Coast Guard officers hit and kicked some of the activists when they stormed the vessel.
The Arctic Sunrise was anchored Tuesday in a small bay near Severomorsk, the home port of Russia's Northern Fleet, located about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of Murmansk.

Russian/Nat
Relations between Russia and Estonia have worsened over a border dispute.
On a tour of the disputed region, Russian President Boris Yeltsin said Monday his country would not give in to Estonian border claims.
The high profile tour appears aimed at showing Estonia just how seriously Russia regards the territory as its own.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin flew to the Russian border to send a clear message to the Estonian government- this land is Russian and it will stay Russian.
He was welcomed with the traditional Russian offering of bread and salt before leaving to inspect the new border post. Relations between Russia and Estonia, cool at the best of times, have been further soured by this latest border dispute.
Estonia claims that Yeltsin is in Petseri, Estonian territory, which was given to them in 1920 by Soviet Russia.
The Russians claim that Yeltsin is in Pechora, a land rich with Russian history.
The Russian President had some strong words for the Estonians.
SOUNDBITE RUSSIAN:
(Translation)
"This land on the border was, is and will remain Russian. We will not give up one centimeter of land to anyone. It's pointless for them to even think about it".
SUPER CAPTION:
Boris Yeltsin, Russian President
And as if to labour the point, Yeltsin then went to visit the Russian Orthodox Monastery nearby.
And the crowds who had come to see the President echoed his words.
SOUNDBITE RUSSIAN:
"Estonia should study the history books. History tells us that this land belonged to Russia hundreds of years ago. Estonia only had it for 20 years".
SUPER CAPTION:
Russian Voxpop
For their part, the Estonians have strengthened the Estonian side of the border, claiming the illegal immigrants from third world countries are being smuggled across the border into Estonia with the help of Russians.
But this is of little comfort to the people who have found themselves caught in the middle of this political argument. Until a few months ago, Markus Kask and his family lived in Estonia. Now after redrawing the borders, he lives in Estonia and they live in Russia.
He is worried that under the new rules, he will have to make a round trip of 400 kilometers to get a visa from the Russian Embassy in Tallinn to visit his family...just down the road.
And people like Markus will take little heart from the sight of Boris Yeltsin rattling the Russian sabre across the border today (Wednesday).

SA-11 GADFLY
9K37M1 BUK-1M
The SA-11 GADFLY is a medium-range, semi-active, radar-guided missile using solid-rocket propulsion that provides defense against high-performance aircraft and cruise missiles. The SA-11 represents a considerable improvement over the earlier SA-6 GAINFUL system, and can engage six separate targets simultaneously, rather than the single target capability of the SA-6. Single-shot kill probability are claimed to be 60-90% against aircraft, 30-70% against helicopters, and 40% against cruise missiles, a significant improvement over the SA-6. The system is more mobile, taking only about 5 minutes to move from road march to engagement. The new system also offers significantly greater resistance to ECM than previous systems. The SA-11 system is comprised of the TELAR (9A310M1), Loader/Launcher (9A39M1), SNOW DRIFT Surveillance Radar (9S18M1), and Command and Control vehicle (9S470M1).
The Mach 3 semi-active homing 9M28M1 missile has a maximum slant range of 28 km and a minimum range of 3 km. It is capable of engaging targets between altitudes of 30 and 14000 m and can sustain 23 g maneuvers. The solid fuel missile is 5.6 meters long with a diameter is 0.4 m and a wing span is 1.2 m. The launch weight is 650 kg, which includes a 70 kg HE warhead with a 17 meter lethal radius.
The SNOW DRIFT warning and acquisition radar provides target height, bearing and range data. The SNOW DRIFT has a detection range of 85 km against high-flying targets, 35 km against targets at an altitude of 100 meters, and 23 km against targets flying nap-of-the-earth (NOE). The radar's tracking range extending from 70 km for high-flying targets to 20 km for NOE targets. Tracking of helicopters hovering at 30 m can be made as far as 10 km. Once a target is identified it is turned over to an TELAR via a data link for tracking and attack. The SNOW DRIFT receives early warning from brigade-level surveillance radars such as the SPOON REST.
The H/I-band FIRE DOME monopulse guidance and tracking engagement radar has an effective guidance range of 3-32 km and an altitude envelope 15 meters to 22 km, and can engage approaching targets moving at a maximum of 3000 km/h (1860 mph). The radar guides as many as three missiles against a single target.
The SA-11 GADFLY system also can be fitted with a supplementary electro-optical sighting system for use in a severe jamming environment, which would overwhelm the normal semi-active radar homing system -- in which case the missile uses radio-command guidance.
The TELAR, based on the GM-569 tracked chassis, carries four ready to fire missiles on a turntable that can traverse a full 360Ί and FIRE DOME radar. The tracked Surveillance Radar vehicle uses the same chassis and carries the SNOW DRIFT radar. The Command and Control vehicle works in conjunction with the SNOW DRIFT radar. The Loader/Launcher vehicle (LLV) resembles the normal TELAR, but replaces the FIRE DOME fire control radar with a hydraulic crane for reloading 9M38 missiles. The LLV can load itself in rear areas from the 9T229 transporter in 15 minutes, and take those missiles to reload the TELAR in about 13 minutes. The LLV can also launch missiles, though it requires radar guidance from a nearby TELAR.
