Nimrud (Arabic: النمرود) is the later Arab name for an ancient Assyrian city located 20 miles south of the city of Mosul, and three miles south of the village of Selamiyah (Arabic: السلامية), in northern Mesopotamia. The city is located in a strategic position six miles north of the point that the river Tigris meets its tributary the Great Zab. Archeologists believe that the city was given the name Nimrud in modern times after the Biblical Nimrod, a legendary hunting hero. The city was identified as the Biblical city of Calah (Kalhu, Kalakh; in Hebrew כלח and in Greek χαλαχ), first referred to alongside Nimrod in Genesis 10, by Henry Rawlin

History Of The Ancient City Of Nimrud
Nimrud (Arabic: النمرود) is the later Arab name for an ancient Assyrian city located 20 miles south of the city of Mosul, and three miles south of the village of Selamiyah (Arabic: السلامية), in northern Mesopotamia. The city is located in a strategic position six miles north of the point that the river Tigris meets its tributary the Great Zab. Archeologists believe that the city was given the name Nimrud in modern times after the Biblical Nimrod, a legendary hunting hero. The city was identified as the Biblical city of Calah (Kalhu, Kalakh; in Hebrew כלח and in Greek χαλαχ), first referred to alongside Nimrod in Genesis 10, by Henry Rawlinson in 1850 on the basis of a possible interpretation of the city's cuneiform proper name as "Levekh".
The city covered an area of 360 hectares (890 acres). The ruins of the city were found within one kilometer of the modern-day Assyrian village of Noomanea in Nineveh Province, Iraq. This is some 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of Mosul.
Archaeological excavations at the site began in 1845, and were conducted at intervals between then and 1879, and then from 1949 onwards. Many important pieces were discovered, with most being moved to museums in Iraq and abroad. In 2013 the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Council established the "Nimrud Project" in order to identify and record the history of the world's collection of artefacts from Nimrud, distributed amongst at least 76 museums worldwide (including 36 in the United States and 13 in the United Kingdom)
The Assyrian king Shalmaneser I (1274 BC–1245 BC) built Kalhu (Calah/Nimrud) during the Middle Assyrian Empire. However, the ancient city of Assur remained the capital of Assyria, as it had been since c. 3500 BC.
A number of historians, such as Julian Jaynes, believe that the Biblical figure Nimrod (of whom the far later Arab name for the city was derived) was inspired by the deeds of the real king of Assyria Tukulti-Ninurta I (1244–1207 BC), the son of Shalmaneser I, and a powerful conqueror. Others believe the name derived from the Assyrian god Ninurta, who had a major cultic centre at Kalhu/Nimrud.
The city gained fame when king Ashurnasirpal II of the Neo Assyrian Empire (883 BC–859 BC) made it his capital at the expense of Assur. He built a large palace and temples in the city that had fallen into a degree of disrepair during the Dark Ages of the mid 11th to mid 10th centuries BC.
A grand opening ceremony with festivities and an opulent banquet in 879 BC is described in an inscribed stele discovered during archeological excavations. The city of king Ashurnasirpal II housed perhaps as many as 100,000 inhabitants[citation needed], and contained botanic gardens and a zoo. His son, Shalmaneser III (858–824 BC), built the monument known as the Great Ziggurat, and an associated temple.
Kalhu remained the capital of the Assyrian Empire during the reigns of Shamshi-Adad V (822–811 BC), Adad-nirari III (810–782 BC), Queen Semiramis (810–806 BC), Adad-nirari III (806–782 BC), Shalmaneser IV (782–773 BC), Ashur-dan III (772–755 BC), Ashur-nirari V (754–746 BC), Tiglath-Pileser III (745–727 BC) and Shalmaneser V (726–723 BC). Tiglath-Pileser III in particular, conducted major building works in the city, as well as introducing Eastern Aramaic as the lingua franca of the empire.
However in 706 BC Sargon II (722–705 BC) moved the capital of the empire to Dur Sharrukin, and after his death, Sennacherib (705–681 BC) moved it to Nineveh. It remained a major city and a royal residence until the city was largely destroyed during the fall of the Assyrian Empire at the hands of an alliance of former subject peoples, including the Babylonians, Chaldeans, Medes, Persians, Scythians and Cimmerians (between 616 BC and 605 BC).
The Nineveh Province in which the ruins of Nimrud lie, is still the major center of Iraq's indigenous Assyrian population (now exclusively Eastern Aramaic-speaking Christians) to this day.
King Ashurnasirpal II, who reigned from 883 to 859 BC, built a new capital at Nimrud. Thousands of men worked to build a 5-mile (8.0 km) long wall surrounding the city and a grand palace. There were many inscriptions carved into limestone including one that said: "The palace of cedar, cypress, juniper, boxwood, mulberry, pistachio wood, and tamarisk, for my royal dwelling and for my lordly pleasure for all time, I founded therein. Beasts of the mountains and of the seas, of white limestone and alabaster I fashioned and set them up on its gates." The inscriptions also described plunder stored at the palace: "Silver, gold, lead, copper and iron, the spoil of my hand from the lands which I had brought under my sway, in great quantities I took and placed therein." The inscriptions also described great feasts he had to celebrate his conquests. However his victims were horrified by his conquests.

ISIS militants bulldoze ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud, destroy priceless historical artifacts
ISIS militants bulldozed the site of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in northern Iraq at around noon on Thursday.
Statues at the site have also reportedly been defaced, although there are no reports on the extent of the damage yet. In response to the militants’ latest act, Iraq’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities says that ISIS continues to “defy the will of the world and the feelings of humanity.”
Located just 30 km from the ISIS stronghold of Mosul, the ancient city of Nimrud was once the military capital of the Assyrian Empire. The site of the ancient city once held troves of Assyrian jewelry and artifacts, most of which has been transferred to museums in London, Paris, Baghdad and Mosul.
The militants are taking control of huge swathes of territory in Iraq’s Nineveh province and have destroyed other ancient and historically meaningful sites in the area. Just last week, ISIS militants obliterated ancient Mesopotamian artifacts in Iraq’s Mosul Museum with sledgehammers and jackhammers.
UNESCO reports that ISIS militants not only destroy ancient artifacts, but they also sell the artifacts on the black market to finance their operations.

ISIS reported to have blown up ancient temple in Palmyra
(CNN)The already burgeoning list of appalling acts by ISIS appears to have grown even longer: the Islamic extremist group has reportedly blown up a nearly 2,000-year-old temple in the historic ruins of Palmyra in Syria.
Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria's director-general of antiquities and museums, told the Syrian state news agency SANA that local sources in Palmyra informed him that ISIS members rigged the Temple of Baalshamin with large quantities of explosives and detonated them.
There was uncertainty -- not unusual amid the chaos of the Syrian conflict -- over when exactly the damage was done to the temple, which dates from the first century AD

Travel agents and airlines, mostly based in Miami, are static with the announcements made by the Obama Administration allowing more Americans to travel to Cuba without a specific license from the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, a process that previously took months and a lot of paperwork. They expect to send many more US citizens to visit Cuba in the next few months.

The figures were first exhibited in London in 1835; the collection is constantly expanding with life size wax statues and politicians, artists and celebrities who often donate their own clothes for their lifeless dabbles to dawn. In spite of its name the British museum established in 1753 exhibits much more than merely British objects. This was the world's first truly public national museum. Amazingly enough there's still no admission charge.
The museum was originally opened to imagine of new aristocrat which quickly probe too small. Built in 1823 the Tympanic Columns Palace is under constant expansion. For the new millennium the court guard was marbled on top to the glass ceiling. In the center of the court under the dome is a circular library. Alongside the classics one can also find such popular works as the first edition of Scarlet Pimpernel, the stories of Beatrix Potter or the manuscripts of Conan Doyle.
Among the numerous exceptional treasures on exhibit of the British museum perhaps the ancient Egyptian collection is the most valuable. From the mummified sacred cat the beauty of the great sphinx of Giza to the Tabrizian granite statue of Remises II there's wealth of objects to see.
The most famous is the rosette stone which dates back to 196 BC and was founded in Nile Valley in 1799. The text of a degree was inscribed done it in hieroglyphic symbols demotic writing and Ingrid translation. By comparing these three variations of the encryption the French archeologist Champollion was finally able to decide for the secret of the h Hieroglyphics. Understanding the writing on the Rosette stone is considered a milestone in the Egyptology There's also a significant ancient Greek collection with for example El Cajon from the Parthenon.
The shallon golden laid ram in the bush is from the ancient Sumerian City of Ur. The Portland vase is from an ancient Roman grave dating back to the first century. The Amitābha Buddha comes from China. Also worth mentioning is the Aztec mosaic mass depicting gates of Goatel and Milden Hall treasure which is perhaps the most valuable of any of the ancient artifacts found in England.

There was uncertainty -- not unusual amid the chaos of the Syrian conflict -- over when exactly the damage was done to the temple, which dates from the first century AD.
The SANA report Sunday didn't specify when the explosion took place. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict, reported on the same day that its sources said ISIS blew up the temple about a month ago.
The Syrian government's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums is trying to find out more from people in Palmyra about the extent of the damage, SANA reported.
The reports come less than a week after the observatory said ISIS militants had publicly beheaded Khaled al-As'ad, the former general manager for antiquities and museums in Palmyra.
ISIS fighters seized control of Palmyra and the nearby modern town of Tadmur in May, prompting fears over what the militants would do to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Track record of trashing heritage sites
On top of its atrocities of rape, enslavement and bloodthirsty killing, ISIS has also blown up other historical sites and destroyed or sold antiquities in the parts of Syria and Iraq that it controls. The group says it considers religious shrines idolatrous.
Dedicated to the Phoenician god of rain and fertility, the Temple of Baalshamin was a small shrine, the only part of a larger compound that survived the centuries somewhat intact, according to the Lonely Planet travel guide.
Syria's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums had previously said that ISIS had destroyed two ancient Muslim shrines, one in Palmyra and another a few kilometers away.
Other monuments, temples and historic buildings have been mined, and a statue of a lion at the entrance to Palmyra's museum has been destroyed.
Elsewhere, ISIS has released footage of its fighters smashing artifacts in the museum of the Iraqi city of Mosul and using sledgehammers, power tools and explosives to destroy the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud.
CNN's Brian Walker contributed to this report.

Travel Planet Oman - Lost Kingdom of Ubar
Built nearly 5,000 years ago, Ubar was a processing and shipping center for frankincense, an aromatic resin grown in the nearby Qara Mountains. Used in cremations and religious ceremonies as well as in perfumes and medicines, frankincense was as valuable as gold.
Ubar's rulers became wealthy and powerful and its residents -- according to Islamic legend -- so wicked and debauched that eventually God destroyed the city, allowing it to be swallowed up by the restless desert. T. E. Lawrence called it "the Atlantis of the sands," and like the undersea Atlantis, many scholars doubted that Ubar even existed.
In a news conference today at the Huntington Library in nearby San Marino, Calif., the researchers will announce that remains excavated over the past two months reveal an unusual eight-sided structure that must have been every bit as magnificent as it was portrayed in legend.
Moreover, the researchers say that they have documented how the city fell, and that it did not appear to be by divine retribution for wickedness. In building his "imitation of Paradise," the legendary King Shaddad ibn 'Ad unknowingly constructed it over a large limestone cavern. Ultimately, the weight of the city caused the cavern to collapse in a massive sinkhole, destroying much of the city and causing the rest to be abandoned. The researchers also discovered the remains of a nearby neolithic village that may date to at least 6000 B.C.
Taken together, the discoveries are expected to shed considerable light on the early history of the region, which has been shrouded in myth, according to Los Angeles lawyer George Hedges, who with filmmaker Nicholas Clapp was one of the leaders of the expedition. Scholars do not know, for example, whether the Queen of Sheba, who would have been contemporaneous with Ubar, actually existed.
The impetus for the search arose when Mr. Clapp, a lifelong Arabophile, first read about Ubar in "Arabia Felix" by British explorer Bertram Thomas. Mr. Thomas had spent years unsuccessfully searching the suspected trade routes for Ubar. Mr. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, planned an exploratory expedition that was disrupted by his untimely death.
But Mr. Clapp had two major advantages over Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Thomas: the closeness of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., which is famous of its space imagery, and the gall to approach researchers there with his "crazy idea" -- to use that imaging capability to locate Ubar.
Mr. Clapp persuaded JPL scientists Charles Elachi and Ronald Blom to scan the region with a special radar system that was flown onthe last successful mission of Challenger. The radar was able to "see" through the sand and soil to pick out subsurface geological features.
Using the imagery, the team was able to pick out the ancient trade routes, which were packed down into a hard surface by the passage of hundreds of thousands of camels. Junctions where the trade routes converged or branched seemed likely locations for the lost city.
Then they enlisted two other principals, archaeologist Juris Zarins of Southwest Missouri State University and British explorer Sir Ranulf Fiennes, who has served with the. British military in the deserts of Oman and fought with the sultan's forces. The team began preliminary excavations at several sites in December and found that an oasis called Shisr held great promise.
A crossroads for wandering Bedouin, Shisr currently has a few residents who farm an acre of land using water from its well.
Mr. Zarins immediately brought in a team from his university, and Mr. Clapp and Mr. Hedges recruited volunteers from a nearby military base to help with the laborious task of excavation. "On some weekends, we had as many as 40 volunteers digging," Mr. Clapp said. "The sand was really flying from the site."
What they found was not a city in the conventional sense. Most Arabs in the past have lived not in traditional dwellings but in tents whose sides can be opened to allow cooling breezes. So the bulk of the "city" would have left few permanent traces, except for fire pits, which the team found in abundance.
But at the center of the tent city was a permanent fortress ringed by eight walls, each about 2 feet thick, 10 to 12 feet high and about 60 feet long. At each corner stood a tower, roughly 30 feet tall. The towers were the primary distinguishing feature of Ubar, which is described in the Koran as "the many-towered city . . . whose like has not been built in the entire land."
wn.com/Travel Planet Oman Lost Kingdom Of Ubar

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Someone once said that your not a true New Yorker until you have lived New York for at lest 10 years,
well since I only moved here in Staten Island New York 9 years ago from Atlantic City NJ, I guess according to them I'm still a tourist Thank God!
So I decided to take advantage of being a tourist for one last year before I become an official resident. My first stop is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world, a place where people can go and be a professional tourist together, a place where I could fit right in!
( The Metropolitan Museum of Art ) right in the heart Of New York City!
And since I never been there before I decided to take my best friend CANON T4I rebel so all my fans, friends & family can be a professional tourist with me. Now of course this is only 10% of what you could see and experience with all the culture, history and great stories and because they have new exhibits every month I would definitely suggest you see it for yourself, but until then set back relax and enjoy!

Descabellada idea verdad. Son solo palabras de un pobre loco... Un saludo.
