It was initially named Airbus A3XX and designed to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market. Boeing is powering up the sales campaign on its newest plane, the 747-8, after overcoming technical obstacles it could ill-afford in its battle for survival against the Airbus A380 in the very large aircraft market.
Both aircraft are struggling to get wins on the board, with the A380 believed to require 100-150 more sales before it breaks even on its $US20 billion development cost.
The cost of developing the 747-8 was only a fraction of that – around $US4 billion – but, like the A380, it has faced technical issues and delays that have piled on further costs.
And, at the consumer end, it has suffered from the perception that it's old technology, while the 1990s invention of the A380 is all-new.
In fact, if you thought the 787 Dreamliner was the latest airliner from Boeing, you'd be forgiven. The company pitched the Dreamliner directly to airline customers in a radical marketing strategy as a piece of brand-new techno-wizardry, that created strong passenger expectations of the plane.
An unforeseen consequence is that the 747 is now seen as passé, even though the "dash eight" did not make its first flight until 2011 – nearly two years after the 787.
If only Boeing had unleashed its latest 747 salesman on the consumer market to spruik its latest creation.
Bruce Dickinson has only just taken over as vice-president for the 747 program and like many other Boeing project leaders he's an engineer with a personal stake in the technology in the 747-8: he was project chief engineer from 2011.
The past two months have seen both Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand get rid of their last 747s, while United Airlines took its 747s off the Los Angeles and San Francisco routes in April, with non-stop Melbourne-Los Angeles 787 services beginning in October.
Qantas has pared back its 747 fleet from a peak of 36 between 2003 and 2007, to just nine in 2015 flying on a handful of routes: Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles and Sydney to Santiago (Chile), Tokyo, Hong Kong and Johannesburg.
A stopover in had to be scheduled in Brisbane, which is 441 kilometres closer to Dallas than Sydney and right on the 747-400ER's range limit.
Even so, as Qantas engineers "broke in" the route, there were unscheduled diversions to Noumea, New Caledonia, to refuel.
Eventually, on rare days when headwinds were too strong, 747 flights from Dallas were diverted to Auckland, New Zealand, where a relief crew was positioned to operate the rest of the journey to Brisbane and Sydney.
The A380 has almost 1000 nautical miles (1800 kilometres) more range than the 747-400ER, allowing Qantas to schedule non-stop travel in both directions – 15 hours 35 minutes from Sydney to Dallas with the prevailing tail wind and 16 hours 50 minutes coming home.
"She's a beauty and she looks so graceful gliding through the air!" Long Island, New York, resident George Maccarone enthuses in a recent Boeing blog. "Having seen A380s approaching JFK [John F. Kennedy airport] for the last few years, I can tell you that the difference between the two aircraft is startling.
"Seeing a 747-8I in the air is like watching Cinderella, while watching the A380 is like watching her ugly stepsister."

"Seeing a 747-8I in the air is like watching Cinderella, while watching the A380 is like watching her ugly stepsister."

I've seen quite a few Airbus Vs Boeing videos so I decided to make my own.
Now take you're pick! ;) and I hope you'll like the video = )
Of coarse don't forget to guess the sound at the end ;) I'll be giving away a price to the 3 best aircraft sound guessers at the end of 2013. It'll be a spotting DVD or something like that. Good Luck everybody!!!
Airbus A380
The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner. It is the world's largest passenger airliner. Initially named Airbus A3XX, Airbus designed the aircraft to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market.
The A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and began commercial service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines.
The A380's upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, with a width equivalent to a wide-body aircraft. With 49% more floor space than the the Boeing 747-8, the cabin provides seating for 525 people in a typical three-class configuration or up to 853 people in all-economy class configurations.
The A380-800 has a design range of 15,700 kilometers, sufficient to fly from New York to Hong Kong, and a cruising speed of about 900 km/h
As of July 2013, Airbus has received 262 firm orders and delivered 106 aircraft.
Emirates has ordered the most A380s with 90.
Boeing 747
The Boeing 747 is a wide-body commercial airliner, often referred to by its original nickname, Jumbo Jet, or Queen of the Skies.
It is among the world's most recognizable aircraft and was the first wide-body ever produced.
The four-engine 747 uses a double deck configuration for part of its length.
Boeing designed the 747's hump-like upper deck to serve as a first class lounge or extra seating, and to allow the aircraft to be easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door. Boeing did so because the company expected supersonic airliners to render the 747, while the demand for subsonic cargo aircrafts would be robust well into the future.
The 747-400, the most common passenger version in service, made it's first flight on the 29th of April 1988 and it's among the fastest airliners in service with a high-subsonic cruise speed of Mach 0.85. It has an intercontinental range of 14.200km.
The 747-400 passenger version can accommodate 416 passengers in a typical three-class layout, or 660 passengers in a high density one-class configuration.

First off let me just apologize. Be warned, despite finally being on an A380 this isn't the best full flight video I've made. My camera battery died just inches above the runway at Heathrow, literally! Less than a second before touch down my camera run out of battery. I tried to grab my older camera out of my bag as quickly as possible but we had just vacated the runway by then. Also the A380 is extremely quiet and Qatar decided to play deafening, irritating music during the entire departure sequence which completely ruins the take off.
SO that aside. This was my first flight on-board an A380 and what a beautiful aircraft it is, Qatar have done a tremendous job on them. Very modern, spacious interior with lots of room and fantastic entertainment system and of course the service was brilliant. However with A380's there is an "Outer layer" of plastic over the window so you can't actually get your camera up to the window so the edge of the window is nearly always visible. Beautiful views over central Europe, some nice shots of other traffic around and incredible "sight seeing" approach over London! Look out for all the London land marks on approach!
FLIGHT DETAILS:
Aircraft: Airbus A380-861
Reg.: A7-APA
Seat: 48K
Date: Friday 5th June 2015
Flight Number: QR003
Departure Time: 07:45 (actual 08:05 approx.)
Arrival Time: 13:15 (actual 12:50 approx.)
Flight Duration: 6 hours 45mins approx.
Cruising Alt: FL400, 40,000ft
Departure Runway: RWY34L
Arrival Runway: RWY27R
Route: DOH-LHR
So I was impressed with the A380 and the service of Qatar however I must say I prefer the 787. And I prefer airlines that don't play bloody awful music during take off!
Thanks for watching.

In this episode of Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections Richard sets out on a quest to find the amazing engineering connections behind the Airbus A380, the largest passenger airliner in history.
His journey reveals that this state-of-the-art aircraft owes as much to weapons of war, Mother Nature and household objects as it does to high technology. He discovers that a bicycle pump, a 19th-century rocket, an ancient Mongolian bow and an eagle's wing are all hidden in its secret DNA.
Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections is a documentary series broadcast on the National Geographic Channel. It is presented by Richard Hammond, and looks at how engineers and designers use historic inventions and clues from the natural world in ingenious ways to develop new buildings and machines.

Emirates has become the first airline to operate an Airbus A380 aircraft on flights to and from Copenhagen. (Først Airbus A380 til Københavns Lufthavn fra Emirates). Today on Tuesday 01 December 2015 at around 12:02 p.m. this beautiful Airbus A380 arrived at Denmark´s Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to a huge crowd of curious Danes, plane spotters and members of the media. Emirates has added this new aircraft type on it´s daily route between Copenhagen and Dubai, so this aircraft should be a daily sight over the skies of Denmark and at Copenhagen Airport. We wre there to visit the maiden flight, or maiden arrival, of this fantastic aircraft. We hope you enjoy the footage of our experiences, from Kystvejen, of what was a most beautiful yet very windy (as usual) day at Copenhagen Airport (CPH)
This new extra big Airbus A380-800 with aircraft registration A6-EOQ had her first flight on 03. June 2015. This aircraft has only been operated by Emirates. This aircraft has at two class configuration with a total of 615 seats.
Wiki writes about the Airbus A380, "The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by the European aircraft company Airbus. In Danish Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is called Københavns Lufthavn or Kastrup Lufthavn.
Wiki writes about Emirates, "Emirates is an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai..."
This aviation 4K footage is filmed at the popular Copenhagen Plane Spotter area called Flyvergrillen (A Burger Bar / Fast Food place with a big seating area to spot airplanes) which lies next to Copenhagen Airport (called Københavns Lufthavn or Kastrup Lufthavn in Danish) close to Runway 22 L and Runway 04 R. The footage is filmed with the Panasonic HC-VX870 4K video camcorder.
Panasonic writes about the HC-VX870, "Capture your vision in 4K video - Elevate your creativity with 4K video. Enjoy greater detail, HDR exposure and improved camera control with Level Shot Function and 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+."

My 20 Tips on Flying an Airbus A380 (in no particular order)
#1 Book early and go online and select your seat. Keep in mind that you cannot lean your head against windows (and sleep).
#2 Carry an empty plastic bottle and ask the crew to fill it up with water. To land fresh you must drink a lot of water and the small glasses that serve you are not enough and you'll end up pissing the crew off by constantly asking for water. Ideally start hydrating a week before your trip!
#3 As you plan your trip, start working out or walking 30 mins a day... in other words, the fitter you are the less of a strain upon arrival.
#4 Remember, you are going to have a long line at the Immigration counters with over 450 passengers on this plane. And add to the number of bags that you'll find on the belt, its going to take some time to get out - so if you have connecting flights make sure its at least 3-5 hours in hand to catch that flight.
#5 Always ask for special meals. Those meals come first and you will be done before the folks next to you get their food. You wont be jousting elbows over that piece of respective chicken. Plus, the food is piping hot.
#6 If its a all day flight, try get a little nap but if its an overnight flight, try getting sleep by popping a pill. Maybe a over the counter sleeping aid.
#7 Dont drink beer etc. You are only going to dehydrate yourself.
#8 Always take your contact lenses off. If you dont wear lenses, always carry eyedrops..your eyes will get dry on these ultra long distant flights
#9 Always carry lip balm/chapstick, extra pair of pants and t-shirt. U saw what happened to me, luckily the seatbelt saved my day or else I would have changed. If I didnt have a change - disaster lol.
#10 Sit on any first row of seats in the respective four section of economy. Plenty of legspace and easy to move about.
#11 This aircraft has no lounge area in economy, so taking a walk for circulation is tough call. If you really have to stretch then go right in front (where you saw me putting on my shoes). It quiet there too
#12 Carry a book, just in case you cant find anything good to watch (which I highly doubt cos there are tons of movies etc). Or, just in case your screen does not work!!
#13 DO NOT keep an ink pen in your pocket. It will leak and ruin your shirt/pant (due to the air pressure)
#14 Make sure you get your USB cable with you so you can keep your phone charged (peace of mind).
#15 No point zipping out your state of the art laptop in economy - you wont have room to really enjoy!
#16 Jetlag. Remember, when you fly West - you are going to feel sleepy early and you'll wake up early for a few days upon arrival. Flying East - you will goto bed later and wake up later (which is a problem). That is why, flying east is bad in terms of jetlag because not everyone can sleep in late, so you tend to get tired easy as the day goes by....so try adjust accordingly.
#17 When you check in - ask them to put FRAGILE sticker on ur bags. Those bags are loaded at the end (on top) and taken off first. However, with the A380 - there are just too many bags for this strategy to work
#18 Dont eat Indian curry etc day before or during the flight. It may give you bad case of gas! That is why you will always see me eat the bland seafood!
#19 Wear loose shoes
#20 Finally, just enjoy the ride, you wont be doing this everyday!
Cheers....and hope this helped. Happy flying!
