Soichiro Honda (本田 宗一郎, Honda Sōichirō?, November 17, 1906 – August 5, 1991) was a Japanese engineer and industrialist, and founder of Honda Motor Co., Ltd..
Honda was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan on November 17, 1906. He spent his early childhood helping his father, Gihei, a blacksmith, with his bicycle repair business. At the time his mother, Mika, was a weaver. At 15, without any formal education, Honda left home and headed to Tokyo to look for work. He obtained an apprenticeship at a garage in 1922, and after some hesitation over his employment, he stayed for six years, working as a car mechanic before returning home to start his own auto repair business in 1928 at the age of 22.
In 1937 Honda founded Tōkai Seiki to produce piston rings for Toyota. During World War II US B-29 bomber attack destroyed Tōkai Seiki's Yamashita plant in 1944, and the Itawa plant collapsed in the 1945 Mikawa earthquake, and Soichiro Honda sold the salvageable remains the company to Toyota after the war for ¥450,000, and used the proceeds to found the Honda Technical Research Institute in October 1946. In 1948 he started producing complete motorcycles as president of the Honda Motor Company. Honda turned the company into a billion-dollar multinational that produced the best-selling motorcycles in the world. Honda's engineering and marketing skills resulted in Honda motorcycles' outselling Triumph and Harley-Davidson in their respective home markets. In 1959 Honda Motorcycles opened its first dealership in the United States.

The founder of Honda, Mr. Soichiro Honda, was always fascinated with vehicles especially with automobiles.
He was not the smartest student in class but he worked hard.
Mr. Honda, made Piston Rings and wanted to sell to Toyota, but they reject his designs because they did not meet up to their standards. Disheartened, he decided to go to college. His classmates, who where more technically advanced, laughed at his designs.
But he continued to study and eventually made his first company, "Tokai Seiki" and got a contract to make products for the Japanese military during WW2.
However, U.S. Bombers, destroyed his factory. A year later, he made a second factory, which was destroyed by an earthquake...
He sold his remaining property to Toyota for $5000 (USD) and focused on making motorcycles.
His motorcycle team entered the Isle of Man TT competition, but failed to win. They went back to the drawing board, redesigned their motorcycles and entered the competition the next year.
They placed 2nd and the following year Honda motorcycles also placed very well. This got the world's attention and respect for Honda motorcycles.
Honda business partner, Takeo Fujisawa, convinced Mr. Honda to market smaller cute motorcycles to Japanese House Wives. It was a success and Honda wanted expand into the U.S. market.
Due to heavy competition with Harley Davidson, Honda continued to market to the "Average American" and avoid the "Bad Boy / Rebel" image, usually associated with Harley Davidson bikes.
"You meet the nicest people on a Honda" marketing did very well with the American consumer. This led to Honda producing more motorcycles than Harley Davidson.
Mr. Honda, focused on making automobiles and started with the Kei Truck, which led to the Civic, Accord and many other popular vehicles. Honda developed another division called "Acura" to promote luxury, high performance vehicles.
Mr. Honda's famous quote:
"Success represents the 1% of your work which results from the 99% that is called failure."
