Pedestrian

A pedestrian is a person traveling on foot, whether walking or running. In some communities, those traveling using tiny wheels such as roller skates, skateboards, and scooters, as well as wheelchair users are also included as pedestrians. In modern times, the term usually refers to someone walking on a road or pavement, but this was not the case historically.

History

Walking has always been the primary means of human locomotion. The first humans walked out of Africa about 60,000 years ago. They walked along the coast of India to reach Australia. They walked across Asia to reach the Americas, and from Central Asia into Europe.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, pedestrianism (walking) was a popular spectator sport just as equestrianism still is in places such as Great Britain and the United States. One of the most famous pedestrians of that period was Captain Robert Barclay Allardice, known as "The Celebrated Pedestrian", of Stonehaven in Scotland. His most impressive feat was to walk 1 mile (1.6 km) every hour for 1000 hours, which he achieved between 1 June and 12 July 1809. This feat captured many people's imagination, and around 10,000 people came to watch over the course of the event. During the rest of the 19th century, many people tried to repeat this feat, including Ada Anderson who developed it further and walked a half-mile (800 m) each quarter-hour over the 1,000 hours.

Pedestrian (band)

Pedestrian is an alternative rock band based in Los Angeles, California, USA. The band was formed in late 2002 by guitarist/songwriter Joel Shearer.

Band members have played in the backing bands of artists such as Gnarls Barkley, Damien Rice, Alanis Morissette,Dido and Our Lady Peace, as well as for Death Cab For Cutie. Pedestrian was also invited to perform as opening acts on tour in North America and overseas with Damien Rice and Our Lady Peace, allowing the band to reach a wider audience and larger fanbase.

Although releasing albums on Shearer's own independent label, the band has a distribution deal with Iris Records.

2nd Force Support Battalion (Australia)

The 2nd Force Support Battalion (2 FSB) is an Australian Army logistics battalion. Established in 1998, 2 FSB is a Reserve unit headquartered in Hobart, with depot in various locations across Tasmania and Victoria.

History

Formed on 1 August 1998 as a Reserve unit, following the amalgamation of a number of supply, medical, military police, maintenance and transport units, its headquarters is based at Derwent Barracks in Hobart, Tasmania, however it has depots in Launceston and Devonport at Paterson Barracks and Kokoda Barracks respectively. In 2011, it took over three reserve sub-units from 9 FSB in Victoria.

2 FSB is currently part the 17th Combat Service Support Brigade. Its role is to provide third line or 'general' support within an area of operations.

The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB; Russian: ФедеральнаÑ? Ñ?лужба безопаÑ?ноÑ?ти РоÑ?Ñ?ийÑ?кой Федерации (ФСБ), tr. Federal'naya sluzhba bezopasnosti Rossiyskoy Federatsii; IPA: [fʲɪdʲɪˈralʲnÉ™jÉ™ ˈsluÊ?bÉ™ bʲɪzÉ?ˈpasnÉ™stʲɪ rÉ?ˈsʲijskÉ™j fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjɪ]) is the principal security agency of Russia and the main successor agency to the USSR's Committee of State Security (KGB). Its main responsibilities are within the country and include counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance as well as investigating some other types of grave crimes and federal law violations. It is headquartered in Lubyanka Square, Moscow's centre, in the main building of the former KGB. The Director of the FSB since 2008 is army general Aleksandr Bortnikov.

The immediate predecessor of the FSB was the Federal Counterintelligence Service (FSK) of Russia, itself a successor to the KGB: on 12 April 1995, Russian president Boris Yeltsin signed a law mandating a reorganization of the FSK, which resulted in the creation of the FSB. In 2003, the FSB's responsibilities were widened by incorporating the previously independent Border Guard Service and a major part of the abolished Federal Agency of Government Communication and Information (FAPSI). The two major structural components of the former KGB that remain administratively independent of the FSB are the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and the State Guards (FSO).
