Greek Rhapsody - Instrumental Music from Greece 1905-1956 is a 2-CD collection featuring 42 tracks meticuolously remastered from 78rpm recordings of Greek instrumentals made between 1905 and 1956. Many tracks are rare and never previously reissued on CD or vinyl; some are taken from the only known copies, while previously reissued tracks are here offered in far superior sound quality. This compilation offers, for the first time, a unique panorama of the instruments and styles of the Greek music of the period.
The 152-page book was written by Tony Klein, a British musician, researcher, and writer, based in Sweden. He has played and researched Greek music for 40 years, and studied with, among others, the veteran Stelios Keromitis.

Princess Sophie of Greece and Denmark (Greek: Πριγκίπισσα Σοφία της Ελλάδας και Δανίας) (26 June 1914 -- 3 November 2001) was the fourth child and youngest daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, making her the sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Sophie was born at Villa Mon Repos on the island of Corfu in Greece.

The first pogrom against the Jews took place in 1871 in the Greek Orothodox Church area. Jews knew better than to be in an area around Easter time and would avoid any gentile areas or churches. However, an erroneous rumor was spread that Jews were holding a gentile captive in a basement somewhere and the Pogrom began.
This was the first time that Jews were beaten nonstop for five days without authorities stepping in and financial losses were great. This was also the first time that Jews realized that they were not welcome here. Pogroms are always driven by economic reasons: substitute whatever minority that a person feels is to blame for all the problems taking place in society. "Genocide" is another name for "Pogroms" - just kill whomever you think is to blame for your woes. Sound familiar?

Russian opera, soprano vocalist.
She studied three years in St. Petersburg with Z. P. Grenning-Vilde, then approximately four years she studied in Milan with S. Ronconi and in Paris with Saint-Yves-Bax and De-Laborde.
From 1892 to 1912 she was a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg where she made her debut as Margherita in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’ of Meyerbeer. During of her career she also performed in Orel, Tambov, Odessa, at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre (1902), Vladivostok (1903), Kharkov, in the cities of Sibir (1909). She made guest appearances in Prague (1903), Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Austria and Japan

A nice collection of very early recordings of klezmer, roughly half from Bucharest and half from New York. These ones cover the span from 1905 to 1952, essentially starting with the advent of the flat-disc format in Eastern Europe (actual cylinder recordings aren't represented here). There's a decent breadth of sound here, ranging from the familiar orchestral sound of New York klezmer bands catering primarily to non-Jewish audiences to the solo tsimbl (hammered dulcimer) of Eastern Europe. The main item to note here is the way that the album catalogs the semi-gradual shift from the importance of the violin as the primary instrument to the reign of the clarinet. There's some beautiful music on this album, but if you're a klezmer fan who's been self-fed the modern klezmer of groups like the Klezmatics and the Klezmonauts, be forewarned that this is a heavily different sound.

Gian Francesco Malipiero (1880-1973) belonged to the Generazione dell’Ottanta. During the 1930’s, Malipiero began composing a series of works entiltled “Sinfonia” which were based in the Austro-Germanic symphony but with a high sense of Italian aesthetics. However, whilst young he wrote a symphonic poem named “Symphony of the Heroes” which later he disliked and presumably destroyed, yet it was found after his death in his house’s cellar. This work is presumably based upon the memory of ancient Greek heroes, but also preceded by half of the famous quote at the entrance of Dante’s inferno; incidentally a place where the heroes of Antiquity were confined in the poet’s vision.
Gian Francesco Malipiero (1880-1973) pertenece a la Generazione dell’Ottanta. Durante los años 1930, Malipiero compuso una serie de obras tituladas “Sinfonía”, precisamente basadas en los modelos austrogermánicos pero con un alto sentido estético italiano. No obstante, en su juventud escribió un poema sinfónico titulado “Sinfonía de los Héroes” que poco después le des-satisfizo y que aparentemente destruyó; solamente para ser hallado a su muerte en la bodega de su casa. La obra se basa en las memorias sobre los héroes de la Grecia Antigua al mismo tiempo que es precedido por la mitad de la famosa cita a la entrada del Infierno de Dante; siendo este un lugar en el que, curiosamente, el poeta florentino situaba como lugar de reclusión de dichos héroes.

Gian Francesco Malipiero (1880-1973) belonged to the Generazione dell’Ottanta. During the 1930’s, Malipiero began composing a series of works entiltled “Sinfonia” which were based in the Austro-Germanic symphony but with a high sense of Italian aesthetics. However, whilst young he wrote a symphonic poem named “Symphony of the Heroes” which later he disliked and presumably destroyed, yet it was found after his death in his house’s cellar. This work is presumably based upon the memory of ancient Greek heroes, but also preceded by half of the famous quote at the entrance of Dante’s inferno; incidentally a place where the heroes of Antiquity were confined in the poet’s vision.

Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban.

We sincerely hope this travel guide to Athens, Greece is a good primer and introduction to Greek culture, Greek Food (Greek Cuisine), and numerous attractions and things to do and see in the city. We cover arts, entertainment, museums and architecture we feel is worth exploring. In terms of tourism this travel video attempts to take you to all of the famous sites as well as many of the off-the-beaten-path spots you may have otherwise missed out on.

20 Things to do in Athens Greece Top Attractions Travel Guide Transcript:
Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban.

The top of our house is the other house’s balcony, from where there is a perfect view on the dark blue water of the Aegean Sea. The venetian blinds summon the color of the blue sky, the rows of cubic houses are sometimes broken by a blue-domed temple or a windmill. The balconies are full of geranium. The smell of gyros is in the air, from the cafes we hear the bouzouki, and the sight of the sunset from the taverns is unforgettable. The sun is scorching, one can smell the salty air and hear the seagulls, while down below the white boats sail towards their unknown destination.
