The Mount Whitney Adventure

Oct. 22, 2011, my brother from Maryland visited and we decided to do something epic. I've never climbed Mount Whitney and thought you can't debate that this climb should be on the top of list of major adventures to do while visiting California. He was down for the challenge and I told him to start training. I planned and researched for a year and got a permit. My brother would bring friends and so would I, none having topped out on the summit before. We all met in Lone Pine, acclimated with an overnighter and started on the trail at Whitney Portal - too late. We also packed too much. But the weather was perfect. Crowds were gone. The visitors from the lowlands East Coast plodded into high camp in the dark defeated. My friends and I went for it. Lots of lessons learned but it was a epic trip. Since this video I've lightened my load, climbed Whitney two more times, including the mountaineers route, and switched out a lot of my gear. Hindsight is amazing and so is proper training. My brother and his friends would return again and summit Mount Shasta this time.
