Plot: Dominated by her possessive mother and her bullying consort, Conroy, since childhood, teen-aged Victoria refuses to allow them the power of acting as her regent in the last days of her uncle, William IV's rule. Her German cousin Albert is encouraged to court her for solely political motives but, following her accession at age eighteen, finds he is falling for her and is dismayed at her reliance on trusty Prime Minister Melbourne. Victoria is impressed by Albert's philanthropy which is akin to her own desire to help her subjects. However her loyalty to Melbourne, perceived as a self-seeker, almost causes a constitutional crisis and it is Albert who helps restore her self-confidence. She proposes and they marry, Albert proving himself not only a devoted spouse, prepared to take an assassin's bullet for her, but an agent of much-needed reform, finally endorsed by an admiring Melbourne.

Quotes:
Princess Victoria: Do you ever feel like a chess piece yourself? In a game being played against your will.::Prince Albert: Do you?::Princess Victoria: Constantly. I see them leaning in and moving me around the board.::Prince Albert: The Duchess and Sir John?::Princess Victoria: Not just them. Uncle Leopold. The king. I'm sure half the politicians are ready to seize hold of my skirts and drag me from square to square.::Prince Albert: Then you had better master the rules of the game until you play it better than they can.::Princess Victoria: You don't recommend I find a husband to play it for me?::Prince Albert: I should find one to play it with you, not for you.
Duchess of Sutherland: Look at that demure little head. And all of us wondering what's inside it.::Lord Melbourne: We'll find out soon enough.
Princess Victoria: [to her mother] Oh, and if you think that I will ever forget that you stood by silent and watched him treat me thus, you are dreaming!
Queen Victoria: [to the Council] I am young, but I am willing to learn, and I mean to devote my life to the service of my country and my people. I look for your help in this. I know I shall not be disappointed. Thank you.
Sir Robert Peel: She starts on your watch, Lord Melbourne. Guard her well and keep her safe from harm.
Prince Albert: [accepting his letter from Victoria] As a matter of interest, will a time come when I read them first?::Baron Stockmar: You'll enjoy this. She has a real flair for description.
Queen Adelaide: You'll have to decide on a husband soon. What about Leopold's candidate?::Queen Victoria: I can't marry the man they want me to marry.::Queen Adelaide: Every suitor will come with strings attached.::Queen Victoria: Can't I be my own mistress for a while, haven't I earnt it? Dear Lord M, he's so very kind, I couldn't have asked for a better tutor.::Queen Adelaide: You may dream of independence, but you won't get it. From now on, everyone will push and pull you for their own advantage, Melbourne more than the rest. Just remember, you are the queen. He's a politician. And politicians, whatever their creed, always resent the monarchy. They pass through, you stay. So just keep dear Lord M in his proper sphere.::Queen Victoria: He's already chosen the new household.
Prince Albert: I'm going back to England.::Baron Stockmar: There must be a reason if you wish to visit Her Majesty.::Prince Albert: Then find me a reason.
Queen Victoria: I do want to help them, whatever you say. And not just the laboring poor, but the hungry and the homeless, and... There are people who are lost, and whose business is it to see to their welfare?::Lord Melbourne: Well, in my experience, ma'am, it's best to let these things develop naturally. If you interfere, you risk overturning the cart.::Queen Victoria: Well, Prince Albert doesn't agree. He's made a study of the working man's condition, he's full to the brim with ideas for their improvement.::Lord Melbourne: Is he indeed? How inspiring.
Queen Adelaide: You are confusing stubbornness with strength, my dear. And I warn you, the people will not like you for it.

A hunter and Army Scout in the early part of his life, he rescues a US Senator and his beautiful daughter, Louisa Frederici. Cody is portrayed as someone who admires and respects the Indians and is a good friend of Yellow Hand who will eventually become Chief of the Cheyenne. Everyone else, including the military, politicians and businessmen on the other hand hate the Indians and are perfectly prepared to trample on their lands and destroy their buffalo hunting grounds. He's eventually forced to fight the Cheyenne however. He's also met a writer, Ned Buntline, who writes about Cody's exploits and he becomes a sensation when he travels East. His career is not assured however, particularly when he attacks those in positions of authority over their maltreatment of the Native American population. He eventually establishes his wild west show that becomes an international sensation.

Quotes:
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: What killed my son?::Doctor: Diptheria.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: What's that?::Doctor: A germ.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Where does it come from?::Doctor: Water systems... and sewage. It's a crowd disease. A disease of civilization.
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen. I was afraid I was going to make a fool of myself in front of you tonight. But that would have been all right, because a man can make a fool of himself when he's off his own stamping grounds. But when a man makes a fool of himself on his own stamping grounds, there's no excuse for him. I don't hold with General Sherman that a good Indian is a dead Indian. From what I've seen, the Indian is a free-born American who'll fight for his folks, for his land and for his living... just like any other American.
Yellow Hand: Men of the Nation. There's a black cloud coming from the east to cover us all. We, the Cheyenne, have called our brothers of the Sioux so we can hear the words about this thing. Yesterday, the buffalo was many as the blades of grass upon the prairie. Today, the buffalo is few as the leaves on an oak tree in winter. The white man has done this thing so the red man will starve. When the buffalo is done, we starve. We'll have no meat to eat, no hide to make tepees, no robes to make beds. Brothers, it's not good for man to hear his woman and children crying. It's a bad thing for a man to starve. There are better ways to die.
Ned Buntline: You know the Indian, Cody, don't you?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Nobody knows the Indian. I've had to fight them since I was fourteen. Pony Express, stage driver, scouting. Indians never do what you'd expect.
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: When you do an Indian a favor, he never forgets it. But if you do him bad, he never forgets that either.
Louisa Frederici Cody: What is she doing here all alone?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: She's just old. When Indians get too old to travel, why they're left behind with a little food and fuel.::Louisa Frederici Cody: To die?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Yeah.::Louisa Frederici Cody: That's terrible! Can't we do something for her?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: It's the way of the people. There's nothing we can do.::Louisa Frederici Cody: Here am I, going to bring a new life into the world, and leaving an old woman to die.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: That's nature's way, Louisa. When anything becomes too old to be useful, it's just pushed aside.::Louisa Frederici Cody: But it shouldn't be! That's why we have civilization!
Yellow Hand: Now there is no debt and no friendship between us. If we meet in battle, as a brave of the Cheyenne, I will take the scalp of Pahashka and hang it on his lodge pole.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: It may be easier to hang it than to take it, Yellow Hand.
Sgt. Chips: I've been waiting for you. Somebody has written you a letter.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Who, me?::Sgt. Chips: That's right, my boy. Who in the world would be writing to you?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: I don't know, but if you give me the letter, I'll find out.::Sgt. Chips: You'll get yours in your proper turn. The mail is delivered according to rank. And there's plenty ranker than you!
Sen. Frederici: Well, that's it! That's my letter you telling you I was coming. I mailed it a week before I left.::Sgt. Chips: That's nothing. Private Mulligan didn't get the letter with his reprieve until days after they hung him. Come to think of it, he never did get it.
Louisa Frederici Cody: Who are you? [the woman turns around] An Indian! What do you mean by breaking into my room and stealing my clothes?::Dawn Starlight: I-I didn't come here to steal::Louisa Frederici Cody: Maybe you Indians have different word for it, but that my dress you have on::Dawn Starlight: I tell you I didn't come here to steal

Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India.
Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and King George III died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, after her father's three elder brothers had all died, leaving no legitimate, surviving children. The United Kingdom was already an established constitutional monarchy, in which the sovereign held relatively little direct political power. Privately, Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840. Their nine children married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the nickname "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign, her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration.
Her reign of 63 years and seven months, which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, is known as the Victorian era. It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. She was the last British monarch of the House of Hanover. Her son and successor, Edward VII, belonged to the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the line of his father.
The decades that followed the Industrial Revolution saw Britain become a global superpower, with an Empire spanning the world. This series looks at some of the major figures involved in the spread of British influence, including prime ministers Disraeli and Gladstone, whose visions of the Empire could hardly have been more divergent. Victoria herself played an important role, especially after the dissolution of the British East India Company in 1857 and the resulting establishment of direct rule in India by the Crown. In Africa, David Livingstone’s explorations of the continent’s interior attracted remarkable public interest, while Cecil Rhodes’s single-minded pursuit of wealth and power proved instrumental in establishing colonial rule in the south. The Suez Canal came under British protection in 1888, further consolidating Britain’s presence in the Middle East. Personal accounts, dramatisations and evocative images from former outposts of the Empire paint a vivid picture of a nation at the zenith of its power.

Queen Victoria's Children Episode 3 - Princes will be Princes ( BBC HD Documentary ), History Documentary Channel, Discovery Documentary
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert shared a passionate marriage. Behind closed doors, royal domestic life often seemed like a battlefield.
In a 60-year family saga this new three-part series explores the reign of Victoria through her personal relationships with her husband and her nine children. It is a story of manipulation, conflict, intimidation, emotional blackmail, and fevered attempts by her children to escape the clutches of their domineering and needy mother.
The series uses a wealth of written material and photos left by Victoria, Albert and their children, including letters, diaries, memoirs and journals, to bring the subject and characters to life.
This final episode focuses on Victoria's relationship with her sons and how, after Albert's death, they struggled to live up to his model of purity. It explores Victoria's difficult relationship with her eldest son Bertie, whom she blamed for Albert's death, believing his sexual indiscretions to have fatally weakened her husband. It also examines her relationship with her son Leopold, the physically weak but spirited haemophiliac who put up the most determined effort to break free from his mother's control. Ultimately, the idea of monarchy based on purity is put to the test as the philandering Bertie comes to the throne.

Queen Victoria`s Letters A Monarch Unveiled Episode 1 BBC Documentary 2014Examining the first half of Queen Victoria`s life, biographer AN Wilson goes in search of a monarch too often misunderstood as the solid black-clad matron and reveals a woman who was passionately romantic and who spent her years as a child and young Queen fighting the control of domineering men.Queen Victoria was one of the nineteenth century`s most prolific diarists, sometimes writing up to 2,500 words a day. From state affairs to family gossip, she poured out her emotions onto paper. Those close to her were afraid her more alarming opinions might escape in written form, causing havoc. In fact much of her writing was destroyed after her death and her personal journals edited by her daughter. But what survives frequently reveals a woman quite different to the one we think we know. AN Wilson reads her personal journals and unpublished letters and discovers the factors that shaped the Queen`s personality. From the tortured relationship with her mother, to the dominant men she clung to in search of a father figure and the powerful struggle that made her marriage to Prince Albert a battleground, Queen Victoria was always a woman in search of intimate relationships. As a daughter, a wife, a mother and the queen of a growing empire, as friends and family came and went, her pen remained her constant companion and friend.Queen Victoria`s journals and letters are read by Anna Chancellor throughout.

The Victorian era of British history (and that of the British Empire) was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain.[1] Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832.
The fields of social history and literature often refer to the Victorian era as Victorianism, especially when discussing the attitudes and culture of the later two-thirds of the 19th century. The study of Victorianism is often specifically directed at Victorian morality, which refers to highly moralistic, straitlaced language and behaviour. Those who study Victorianism are Victorianists. The era was preceded by the Georgian period and followed by the Edwardian period. The later half of the Victorian age roughly coincided with the first portion of the Belle Époque era of continental Europe and the Gilded Age of the United States.
Culturally there was a transition away from the rationalism of the Georgian period and toward romanticism and mysticism with regard to religion, social values, and arts.[2] In international relations the era was a long period of peace, known as the Pax Britannica, and economic, colonial, and industrial consolidation, temporarily disrupted by the Crimean War in 1854. The end of the period saw the Boer War. Domestically, the agenda was increasingly liberal with a number of shifts in the direction of gradual political reform, industrial reform and the widening of the voting franchise.
Two especially important figures in this period of British history are the prime ministers Gladstone and Disraeli, whose contrasting views changed the course of history. Disraeli, favoured by the queen, was a gregarious Tory. His rival Gladstone, a Liberal distrusted by the Queen, served more terms and oversaw much of the overall legislative development of the era.
The population of England and Wales combined almost doubled from 16.8 million in 1851 to 30.5 million in 1901.[3] Scotland's population also rose rapidly, from 2.8 million in 1851 to 4.4 million in 1901. Ireland's population decreased rapidly, from 8.2 million in 1841 to less than 4.5 million in 1901, mostly due to the Great Famine.[4] At the same time, around 15 million emigrants left the United Kingdom in the Victorian era and settled mostly in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.[5]
During the early part of the era, the House of Commons was headed by the two parties, the Whigs and the Conservatives. From the late 1850s onwards, the Whigs became the Liberals. These parties were led by many prominent statesmen including Lord Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, Lord Derby, Lord Palmerston, William Ewart Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, and Lord Salisbury. The unsolved problems relating to Irish Home Rule played a great part in politics in the later Victorian era, particularly in view of Gladstone's determination to achieve a political settlement. Southern Ireland achieved independence in 1922.

Queen Victoria's Empire - ( History Documentaries )

Passage to India
On the same day in May 1856 that Queen Victoria held a review in Hyde Park at which she distributed the first Victoria Crosses, earned in the Crimea, she learned of the likelihood that many more medals were in the offing. Indian troops -- Sepoys -- in the subcontinent had mutinied. The news from India, with the "cruel suspense" (as she put it) of weeks of delay in securing information, as telegraphic communication was incomplete, had come just as she was pressing her prime minister, Viscount Palmerston, and the Army secretary, Lord Panmure, to do something about the "defenseless state" of Britain itself in the aftermath of post-Crimea military retrenchments. Suddenly, penny-pinching to reduce taxes had to be abandoned. The commander-in-chief of forces in India, General George Anson, was reported dead. Palmerston had to rush a replacement, Sir Colin Campbell, who departed the next day, on the long voyage around the Cape to a situation bound to be very different when he arrived from anything he knew as he embarked.
