The President of Sudan has warned that the fight against jihadist extremism must engage militants on an ideological level, and not solely concentrate on military action against them. Omar al-Bashir was speaking exclusively to euronews in the week that ISIL released a video purporting to show the execution of 21 Egyptian citizens - an act that spurred Egypt into launching airstrikes against ISIL targets in neighbouring Libya. He warned that simply using violence against young radicals who figh… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/02/16/cia-and-mossad-are-behind-boko-haram-and-isil-says-sudan-president What are the top stories today? Omar Al Bashir Interview (2011): Bashir accuses ICC of double standards For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/61723/short-films/omar-al-bashir-interview.html In this exclusive interview, President Omar al-Bashir has accepted responsibility for the conflict in Darfur for the first time. Yet he denies charges of genocide, accusing the ICC of 'double-standards'. "Of course, I am the president so I am responsible", Bashir admits when asked about the conflict in Darfur, which has left tens of thousands dead. Yet the reviled president argues that Darfur is a conflict heralding from colonial days and accuses the western media of exaggerating the number of human losses "for a reason". Despite facing ten different counts of crimes against humanity, Bashir is adamant that the case against him is wholly political, asking why the ICC isn't investigating crimes in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. He also criticises the NATO intervention in Libya, saying their motives are questionable and that their actions risk destabilising Sudan and the surrounding region. Travel video about destination Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

Omar al-Bashir said that America’s CIA and Israel’s Mossad are behind group Boko Haram and ISIL.“I said CIA and the Mossad stand behind these organisations. In South Sudan, the conflict between rival ethnic groups of President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar has plunged the nation into turmoil and recent talks to end the crisis have collapsed. Fighting between the two sides has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced nearly two million. Now the country is facing a serious humanitarian crisis. VOA's Zlatica Hoke reports.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed disappointment with the failure of South Sudan's warring parties to reach a peace deal. Ban said the parties failed to display statesmanship. He said inaction would only bring about continued suffering for both sides and the people of Sudan. He called for the continuation of the negotiations. On Tuesday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to impose sanctions on those who block peace efforts. South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar had until March 5 to reach a power-sharing agreement after 14 months of conflict. But they failed to reach that agreement during meetings in Ethiopia. The latest round of peace talks between the two warring parties in South Sudan has come to a standstill, as President Salva Kiir and his rival former vice president, Riek Machar, failed to agree on any of the major outstanding issues. The East African regional bloc, IGAD, which is mediating the talks in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, had set a Thursday deadline for the two sides to iron out their differences. The group said the talks would continue Friday on issues such as power sharing. IGAD had hoped to help establish a transitional government by April. The threat of U.N. sanctions now hangs over Kiir and Machar, as the U.N. Security Council this week unanimously approved creation of a system to impose sanctions on those blocking peace in their country. Fighting broke out in South Sudan in December 2013 when Kiir accused his dismissed deputy of attempting a coup. The fighting in South Sudan has killed thousands of people, displaced nearly 2 million and left another 4 million people dependent on food assistance.
A leaked African Union report calls for South Sudan's president and his main rival to be barred from a transitional government and for the war-torn country to be placed under AU control. Reuters news agency published an account of the report Friday as another round of talks to end South Sudan's 15-month conflict ended in Addis Ababa without a peace deal. According to Reuters, the report says President Salva Kiir and former deputy-turned-rebel leader Riek Machar should be barred from roles in a "transitional executive" body, along with all the ministers in power before the cabinet was dissolved in July 2013. The report recommends creation of an AU-appointed and U.N.-backed panel to oversee a five-year transition for South Sudan. Oil revenue would go into an escrow account overseen by the African Development Bank. Reuters says the AU report also calls for creation of an African peacekeeping force made up of troops "without prior involvement or direct interest in South Sudan." There was no immediate response from the South Sudanese government. A rebel spokesman in Addis Ababa, Puot Kang Chol, called for the full report to be released. "We have seen that and we have been demanding the publishing of that report. And we continue to demand the same - we want that report published so that we see it in full. We have not seen it in full, we have seen only part of it and we are not worried about the report. But we want to see it, we want it published officially," said Chol. The spokesman also said that if Machar is to be excluded from the transitional government, "there must be a legal basis for that." Fighting erupted in South Sudan in December 2013, six months after President Kiir fired Machar as vice president. The fighting exposed ethnic divisions in the country, with the Dinka tribe supporting Kiir and the Nuer tribe backing Machar. Repeated cease-fires have failed to take hold. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced nearly two million.
Peace talks between the two warring parties in South Sudan have been suspended indefinitely. President Salva Kiir and his rival, rebel leader and former vice president, Riek Machar, had been meeting in Ethiopia since Tuesday, but the talks were adjourned on Friday with no peace agreement in place. No further meetings have been scheduled. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said in a statement on Friday that he regretted "the talks did not produce the necessary breakthrough", adding that the failure was disappointing for mediators and observers who had tried their best to urge the warring factions to make concessions for peace. "The consequences of inaction are the continued suffering of you, the people of South Sudan, and the prolonging of a senseless war in your country," the statement said. "This is unacceptable, both morally and politically." Fighting erupted in December 2013 after a political dispute in which Kiir sacked Machar. The fighting has killed more than 10,000 people and driven more than 1.5 million from their homes. The conflict runs along ethnic rifts that pre-date independence. On Thursday, the mediator said the talks had extended to Friday to allow the two sides to finalise details of power sharing. An African Union report, yet to be officially released, calls for Kiir and Machar to be barred from a transitional government and for the oil-producing country to effectively be placed under AU control, sources and a draft of the report said.
Days before a deadline to once again reach a peace deal that would end 15 months of violence in Africa’s newest country, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar are meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. To step up pressure on both parties, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Tuesday to possibly impose sanctions if a deal is not reached by Thursday March 5th. VOA’s Vincent Makori reports.
President Salva Kiir of South Sudan arrived in Addis Ababa on March 2, much later than 19th February when he was expected. Together with rebel leader Riek Machar they failed to lead negotiations into a comprehensive agreement of transitional government by March 5, the deadline set by the Intergovernmental authority for Development. President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar are to begin face to face consultations with the guidance of prime minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn. However, analysts say the fact that they are just going to receive what was discussed in their absence is already a sign of failure. The two are meeting only two days to the deadline following the late arrival of president Kiir. The president’s late arrival is already raining speculation. Negotiations since 19th February, between thematic groups from the warring sides have reached a deadlock on three issues: the structure of leadership that is determining who will be the first vice president. There is also an issue of whether the transitional government should have two armies as per demand of rebels or maintain one, and how justice and accountability will be given to the South Sudanese. Analysts say the negotiations have turned out to be a one party affair. This is because the other political parties in South Sudan have not been allowed to be in Addis Ababa to attend. In addition, members of civil society have been granted just an observer status and only for questioning the validity of the inclusivity that mediation has been pushing for. In an interview published by France's Le Monde newspaper on Thursday, Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said he will stand aside in 2020 if he is elected for one more term in April elections. The announcement by the 71-year-old, who is wanted on charges of genocide and war crimes by the International Criminal Court, will refocus attention on his extended rule after 25 years in power. Bashir had previously signaled he would step down this year, but his National Congress Party chose him as its candidate in October, all but assuring his success against a fractured and weakened opposition. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/6koRX4AQd-w/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

noodls 2015-04-14Sudan (i/suːˈdæn/ or /suːˈdɑːn/;Arabic: السودان, as-Sūdān), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان, Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), sometimes called North Sudan, is an Arab state in North Africa (sometimes also considered to be part of the Middle East). It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. The population of Sudan is a combination of indigenous inhabitants of Nile Valley, and descendants of migrants from the Arabian Peninsula. Due to the process of Arabisation common throughout the rest of the Arab World, today Arab culture predominates in Sudan. The majority of the population of Sudan adheres to Islam. The Nile divides the country between east and west sides.
The people of Sudan have a long history extending from antiquity which is intertwined with the history of Egypt. Sudan suffered seventeen years of civil war during the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) followed by ethnic, religious and economic conflicts between the Muslim Arab northern Sudanese and the mostly animist and Christian Nilotes of Southern Sudan. This led to the Second Sudanese Civil War in 1983. Because of continuing political and military struggles, Sudan was seized in a bloodless coup d'état by colonel Omar al-Bashir in 1989, who thereafter proclaimed himself President of Sudan. The civil war ended with the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement which granted autonomy to what was then the southern region of the country. Following a referendum held in January 2011, South Sudan seceded on 9 July 2011 with the consent of Sudan's President al-Bashir.
