Epistemology: Hume's Skepticism and Induction Part 1
According to the philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), absolutely everything we know falls into one of two categories: either it is a relation of ideas (e.g., 2 + 2 =4) or it is a matter of fact (e.g., the sky is blue). Daniel Greco walks us through this famous Humean distinction in preparation for examining Hume's even more famous skeptical argument against induction.

"I want to do stories that are about the bits of cultural furniture that are sitting there that we're like, 'Oh yeah, that's been there for years! What could possibly be weird about it?' And then we're going to lift that piece of furniture and look at all the bugs scurry away," says Adam Conover, host Adam Ruins Everything.
Adam Ruins Everything started as a web series for College Humor. As the eponymous host of the show, Conover "ruins" widely held beliefs that just so happen to be wrong. His targets have ranged from the TSA, to forensic science, to engagement rings, to car dealerships. TruTV picked up the series, which is still airing its first season on Tuesday nights, and expanded it into its current half hour format.
Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Conover to discuss his approach to debunking, why he believes there's a market for skeptical inquiry, what other shows influenced him, and why false cultural beliefs persist in the age of nearly unlimited access to information.
"You can't escape culture," says Conover. "You can learn about it. You can criticize it. You can try to move it slowly. But at the end of the day, you can't actually opt out of the culture that you're in."
Approximately 10 minutes. Shot by Meredith Bragg and Anthony Fisher. Music by Ant Neely. Additional footage provided by College Humor and TruTV.

Skepticism is the attitude of doubting the truth of something. It is a state of rigid certainty, the certainty of invalidity. It is the opposite of suspended judgment. It is the rigid judgment that absolute certain knowledge is impossible. This is why skepticism does not feel good emotionally to the skeptic or to those who are on the receiving end of the skeptic. In this episode, Teal explains how to set aside your skepticism and open up to the realm of possibility instead.

In this eighty-seventh video in the new series on G.W.F. Hegel's great early work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, we begin our study of the third portion of the section "Self-Consciousness", i.e. "The Freedom of Self-Consciousness". I read and comment on paragraphs 209 and 210 of the text here.

James Conant continues his discussion of epistemological skepticism (Cartesian vs Kantian skepticism).
The split, or estrangement, within the Unhappy Consciousness - between the contingent individual and the unchangeable, eternal, universal both presents itself within consciousness, and will eventually be overcome or reconciled. The contingent individual comes to realize individuality within the very heart of the unchangeable in two ways.
The unchangeable universal itself becomes attains a fuller presence through becoming itself individual, or individuality in general. The contingent individual can also realize itself within the unchangeable, as Spirit
In this video series, I will be working through the entire Phenomenology, paragraph by paragraph -- for each one, first reading the paragraph, and then commenting on what Hegel is doing, referencing, discussing, etc. in that paragraph.
This series is designed to provide an innovative digital resource that will assist students, lifelong learners, professionals, and even other philosophers in studying this classic work by Hegel for generations to come. Hegel now focuses on the experience (Erfahrung) which the Unhappy Consciousness passes through as it attempts to move away from an abstract Unchangeable through relating to the Unchangeable that now involves individuality within it.
At first, this new advance and development appears to be something merely contingent, and the individual consciousness does not realize that its own opposedness to the universal Unchangeable both involves a deeper necessity, and is the doing of consciousness itself. The hope of attaining a full unity between individual and universal is raised, but not fulfilled at this point in the dialectic.

*** Skepticism is a familiar term to many of us conjuring up notions of doubt, uncertainty, and perhaps even unbelief. Yet, Skepticism did not always have such a narrow meaning. In fact Skepticism has helped formulate a number of important religious and intellectual positions throughout history.Paul L. Heck's new book Skepticism in Classical Islam: Moments of Confusion (Routledge, 2013) is perhaps the first major treatment of skepticism in the Islamic context. This book explores the critical role skepticism played in the development of Islamic theology from the 10th through 14th centuries. Paul Heck suggests we should not understand skepticism as atheism. Rather, it is the admission that one cannot convincingly demonstrate a truth claim with certainty. Heck surveys a number of important Islamic scholars, such as Al-Jahiz, al-Amiri, Al-Ghazali, and Ibn Taymiyya, concluding they all acknowledged such impasses only to be inspired to find new ways to resolve the conundrums they faced. In his book Paul Heck examines the way these key thinkers, among others, in classical Islam faced perplexing theological and philosophical questions, all the while walking a fine line between belief in God's message as revealed in the Qur'an and the power of the mind to discover truths on its own.
Although this is a book about Islamic skepticism, Heck wants to stimulate scholars in the field of religious studies to inquire into how skepticism has formed, and continues to form, a constitutive part of religious reasoning and how we understand the nature of religion. Seeking to put Islam on the map of the broader study of the history of skepticism, I believe this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Religion, History, Islamic Studies, and Philosophy ***
wn.com/Paul L. Heck Skepticism In Classical Islam (Nbis, 15 11 15)

In the second episode of "Truth or Skepticism," Tom Sosnoff and special guest Dylan Ratigan tackle current S&P; 500 and market conditions and opportunities available for the individual investor. Tom argues that--given price extremes and implied volatility-- Oil, Russia and the Bond market have favorable (trade) circumstances that should be taken advantage of. As Tom mentions, he grew up trading the S & P. Dylan wants to know if simply trading the S & P is the place to start to begin a trading career, but Tom clarifies that the most important thing about beginning to trade is engaging yourself and picking a highly liquid stock. Dylan Ratigan argues that the "news" matters more than Tom Sosnoff lets on. But what is the "truth" about this outlook and current market behavior? And how do you manage your risk once you're finally engaged?
