Lossless JPEG is a 1993 addition to JPEG standard by the Joint Photographic Experts Group to enable lossless compression. However, it might be used as an umbrella term to refer to all lossless compression schemes developed by the Joint Photographic Expert group. They include JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS.
Lossless JPEG was developed as a late addition to JPEG in 1993, using a completely different technique from the lossy JPEG standard. It uses a predictive scheme based on the three nearest neighbors, and entropy coding is used on the prediction error. The standard Independent JPEG Group libraries cannot encode or decode it, but Ken Murchison of Oceana Matrix Ltd. wrote a patch that extends the IJG library to handle Lossless JPEG. Lossless JPEG has some popularity in medical imaging, and is used in DNG and some digital cameras to compress raw images, but otherwise was never widely adopted.

As JPEGs are compressed if you rotated them and then re-saved they would normally be re-compressed which would degrade the image. UPDATE: This problem is solved in Windows 8.
There is a known Windows 7 incompatibility issue with portrait photos taken with the iPhone 4 and 4S. Unlike with the 3G or 3GS, photos taken in portrait mode on the iPhone 4 and 4S do not auto-rotate when imported in to Windows 7. This is the case: (i) whether you sync your photos via iCloud; or (ii) whether you physically import them via USB; even when you explicitly set the Windows import utility to auto-rotate them on import.
To make matters worse, a good portion of these photos end up locked in such a way that you cannot subsequently rotate them with the various photo rotate tools built in to Windows 7.

JPEG is designed for compressing either full-color or gray-scale images of natural, real-world scenes. It works well on photographs, naturalistic artwork, and similar material; not so well on lettering, simple cartoons, or line drawings. JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm, meaning that the decompressed image isn't quite the same as the one you started with. JPEG is designed to exploit known limitations of the human eye (more about this later), notably the fact that small color changes are perceived less accurately than small changes in brightness. A useful property of JPEG is that the degree of lossiness can be varied by adjusting compression parameters. This means that the image maker can trade off file size against output image quality. The JPEG compression algorithm is at its best on photographs and paintings of realistic scenes with smooth variations of tone and color. Such images are better saved in a lossless graphics format such as TIFF, GIF, PNG, or a raw image format. JPEG is also not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits, as some image quality will usually be lost each time the image is decompressed and recompressed (generation loss). To avoid this, an image that is being modified or may be modified in the future can be saved in a lossless format, and a copy exported as JPEG for distribution.

Unlike with the 3G or 3GS, photos taken in portrait mode on the iPhone 4 and 4S do not auto-rotate when imported in to Windows 7. This is the case: (i) whether you sync your photos via iCloud; or (ii) whether you physically import them via USB; even when you explicitly set the Windows import utility to auto-rotate them on import.
To make matters worse, a good portion of these photos end up locked in such a way that you cannot subsequently rotate them with the various photo rotate tools built in to Windows 7.
This video shows you how to use the FREE JPEG Lossless Rotator app to easily solve this problem.

For web usage, where the bandwidth used by an image is important, JPEG is very popular. JPEG is the most common format saved by digital cameras. On the other hand, JPEG is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, where the sharp contrasts between adjacent pixels cause noticeable artifacts. Such images are better saved in a lossless graphics format such as TIFF, GIF, PNG, or a raw image format. JPEG is also not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits, as some image quality will usually be lost each time the image is decompressed and recompressed (generation loss). To avoid this, an image that is being modified or may be modified in the future can be saved in a lossless format, and a copy exported as JPEG for distribution.

For web usage, where the bandwidth used by an image is important, JPEG is very popular. JPEG is the most common format saved by digital cameras. On the other hand, JPEG is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, where the sharp contrasts between adjacent pixels cause noticeable artifacts. Such images are better saved in a lossless graphics format such as TIFF, GIF, PNG, or a raw image format. JPEG is also not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits, as some image quality will usually be lost each time the image is decompressed and recompressed (generation loss). To avoid this, an image that is being modified or may be modified in the future can be saved in a lossless format, and a copy exported as JPEG for distribution.

A version that enables lossless compression has been included in the Venus probe Akatsuki. In addition, Hayabusa 2, a planetary explorer scheduled for launch in 2014, will have both lossless and lossy versions.
"In this demo with a moving car, the side camera captures 120 frames per second. On the right side of the screen, the pictures are compressed and restored using StarPixel in real time at 120 fps. It seems to be handled easily, but compressing, restoring, and displaying pictures at 120 fps on an ordinary PC can't be done unless the processing load is low."
In software compression tests using color images, compared with JPEG2000, compression speed was 10-40 times higher for a similar compression ratio, and expansion speed was 6-13 times higher.
This technology is also being used in a road image gathering system by the NEXCO West Japan Group.
"For expressway maintenance, roads are photographed at high speed - tens of frames per second. Until now, the pictures have been stored without compression. But now, using StarPixel, we can take pictures and store them on PC in real time, reducing the amount of image data by about half. This means we can photograph double the length of road in the same time. This is one example of how StarPixel's advantages are emerging."
StarPixel is provided as a standard Windows DLL, enabling it to be quickly embedded in various current image processing systems. NEC aims to sell 10,000 licenses during the next three years.
