A New Era in Education: Dedication of the Henderson-Hopkins School in East Baltimore
Before a standing-room-only crowded gathered in the auditorium, Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels and a host of city and state officials today (Feb. 10, 2014) formally opened the Henderson-Hopkins K-8 elementary/middle school, the beautiful new brick-colored cornerstone of an ambitious, ongoing urban renewal effort in East Baltimore. The $43 million facility, the first new public school building in East Baltimore in more than two decades, is seen as a key component of the 88-acre biotech and residential project taking place just blocks north of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Elmer A. Henderson: A Johns Hopkins Partnership School opened Jan. 2, the first new public school building in East Baltimore in more than 20 years. The $43 million K-8 school is the cornerstone for East Baltimore Development Inc.'s ongoing efforts to redevelop and re-energize an 88-acre swath of East Baltimore just north of Johns Hopkins Hospital with a science and technology center, new homes, graduate student housing, a park and retail amenities. Originally known as East Baltimore Community School, the school had operated since 2009 from modular, temporary classrooms just north of the current campus. Construction on Henderson-Hopkins' 90,000-square-foot facility began in June 2012. With contemporary architecture and flexible learning spaces, Henderson-Hopkins is designed to be one of Baltimore's most progressive schools, serving 368 students on the first day of school and 567 students at capacity. The Johns Hopkins University School of Education, in partnership with Morgan State University's School of Education and Urban Studies, will operate the school. Specifically, the Johns Hopkins School of Education has the primary responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the school, with Morgan assuming the governance representation of the partnership. In addition to a $10 million early childhood center that will serve 170 children as young as 6 weeks, the campus includes a gym, auditorium, library and family resource center — all available for community use. Students will enjoy space dedicated for art and music, rooms filled with natural light, wide open corridors and outdoor play zones. Instead of trekking to a traditional cafeteria for lunch, children will dine in more intimate nooks, close to their classrooms. A key feature of the school will be the health suite that will be staffed in partnership with the Baltimore City Health Department and students and faculty from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Instead of merely treating students who aren't feeling well, the emphasis will be proactive, teaching students and their families about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Contributions for the school and early childhood center came from a number of partners including the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and Windsong Trust. "She Blinded Me with Science" Artist Joins Johns Hopkins University
Thomas Dolby, creator of the memorable 1980s synthpop anthem "She Blinded Me With Science," will join Johns Hopkins University's faculty as the first Homewood Professor of the Arts. Since the debut of his hit single in 1982—which peaked at No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard chart—Dolby, now 55, has been at the forefront of digital music, pioneering ways to merge the music with film, technology, and science. At Johns Hopkins, starting in the fall, he will be teaching "Sound on Film," a collaboration between Homewood's Film and Media Studies program and Peabody's Recording Arts and Sciences program, in which students create soundtracks for films. Dolby will also be the artistic director of the Program in Sound on Film at Station North, helping to lead the university's efforts in Baltimore's blossoming arts and entertainment district. "There's a family of arts industries that all use digital technologies," Katherine S. Newman, dean of Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, told The Baltimore Sun. "We're trying to create what I think of as a Silicon Valley for the arts while teaching our students the skills they'll need. It's a natural fit for us, because scientists and artists are both outside-the-box thinkers." With the 1982 release of his first album, The Golden Age of Wireless, Dolby became an unlikely pop star. His quirky video for the single "She Blinded Me With Science" was played in heavy rotation in the early days of MTV. In The New York Times, Stephen Holden once called the single a "pop tone poem." Dolby released four acclaimed albums in the first 10 years of his solo career. The last of these, 1992's Astronauts and Heretics, was one of the first major studio albums to be completely engineered using a Macintosh home computer. In 1994, Dolby founded Headspace, Inc. and created the Beatnik audio engine, an early software synthesizer. The product was designed as a component for video games, and Dolby immediately saw its potential for use in early web browsers. While working with the founders of Netscape, Dolby licensed Beatnik to Sun Microsystems for use in the Java programming language. Beatnik came to the attention of Nokia engineers, who sought a sound solution for their mobile phones. Ultimately, ringtones proved the most robust market for the Beatnik audio engine, and by 2005 Dolby's technology was in more than half of the world's mobile phones. Over two decades, Dolby adapted his musical vision to feature films, video games, and electronic sound technology. He has written scores for films by Ken Russell and Richard Brooks, and his music has been featured in dozens of films and television shows, from "Mission Impossible III" to "Breaking Bad." Dolby served as musical director for the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences from 2001 to 2012. Last year, he toured the U.S. performing a live soundtrack to his award-winning documentary short, The Invisible Lighthouse, which he shot, scored, and edited himself. Dolby's position at Johns Hopkins is supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Want a Better Memory? Drink up!
Want a Better Memory? Drink up!
Johns Hopkins Researchers Find Caffeine Enhances Memory For some, it's the tradition of steeping tea leaves to brew the perfect cup of tea. For others, it's the morning shuffle to a coffee maker for a hot jolt of java. Then there are those who like their wake up with the kind of snap and a fizz usually found in a carbonated beverage. Regardless of the routine, the consumption of caffeine is the energy boost of choice for millions to wake up or stay up. Now, however, researchers at the Johns Hopkins University have found another use for the stimulant: memory enhancer. Michael Yassa, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins, and his team of scientists, found that caffeine has a positive effect on long-term memory in humans. Their research, recently published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that caffeine enhances certain memories for up to 24 hours after it is consumed. The lead author of the paper is Daniel Borota, an undergraduate student in Yassa's lab who received an undergraduate research award from Johns Hopkins to conduct this research. Additional authors, all from Johns Hopkins, are: Elizabeth Murray, a research program coordinator in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences; John Toscano, professor in the Department of Chemistry; Gizem Kecili, a graduate student also in the chemistry department and Allen Chang, Maria Ly and Joseph Watabe, all undergraduates in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. This research was supported by grants number P50 AG05146 and R01 AG034613 from the National Institute on Aging as well as CHE-1213438 from the National Science Foundation.- published: 12 Jan 2014

Johns Hopkins University Students Get a Spring Surprise
Students on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus returned from Spring Break in 2014 to a colorful surprise on campus. Learn more at http://hub.jhu.edu/2014/03/24/hey-look-new-chairs. A series of pastel-hued chairs had been set up across campus to allow students better interaction with the campus environment and each other. Last week, on the first day of spring, more than 60 new chairs (and a handful of side tables) were dropped off at three locations—on the Wyman Quad, Keyser Quad, and the lawn next to Whitehead Hall—courtesy of Homewood Student Affairs. "We know our students are extremely driven and often it's hard to find those moments to just stop, relax, and reflect," said Kevin Shollenberger, vice provost for student affairs. "We hope these chairs are used as informal gathering places where our students will sit with their friends and enjoy a new perspective of our beautiful campus." Gary Beck - Hopkins / Mark Ernestus Meets BBC (Gary Beck Edit) [Unreleased] Exctract from Gary Beck Boiler Room DJ Set In 2008, British-born techno pioneer Richie Hawtin plucked 17 producers from obscurity and featured their work on a special newcomers compilation. For many of them, it was their debut release on Hawtin's respected Minus label. For all of them, it was a major opportunity for their electronic music careers. With the backing of such a formidable DJ as Hawtin, much speculation was made about the possible futures of these young and talented producers. Out of the 17, it is arguably Glasgow-based producer and DJ Gary Beck who has made the most impact so far. In the three years since 'Richie Hawtin Presents Sounds From Can Elles', Gary Beck's music has reached many of techno's most respected labels including Slam's Soma Records, Len Faki's Figure, Nic Fancuilli's Saved Records, Speedy J's Electric Deluxe, and Sven Väth's Cocoon. Beck has also DJed at some of the world's most important dancefloors like Tresor and Berghain in Berlin, Amsterdam's Awakenings, London's Ministry of Sound, Glasgow's Sub Club, and Chicago's Smart Bar. And perhaps most impressively of all, Gary Beck's set at Scotland's Rockness festival in June 2010 was broadcast as an Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1, an important milestone for any serious dance music performer. But what is the secret to Gary Beck's ongoing success? Why has he progressed further than any of the other 16 Richie Hawtin-backed producers ? "People really started to take notice of me when Minus released 'Consumed'," says Gary Beck. "It was a big surprise when Richie called asking to sign the track. I was always confident that something was going to happen with my tracks but this release was more than I expected at the time. It gave me extra belief in my productions." The release, Gary Beck says, was like a catalyst and pushed him ever deeper down the production hole. But rather than try to replicate the 'Consumed' formula, Beck concentrated on finding his own sound, not that that is ever an easy task. "Finding my own style has probably been the toughest challenge of my career," he says. "There is so much music out there, I had to be unique. I wanted to create a sound that people would instantly recognize as a Gary Beck production."- published: 23 Aug 2013
