Groningen, Netherlands. This video review tells about the northernmost province of the Netherlands - Groningen. The video was filmed using a drone so that viewers can enjoy the beauty of one of the most picturesque countries in Europe from a bird's eye view, made in 4k resolution.
general information
The province of Groningen is located in the northeast of the Netherlands. Since 1959, it has been known for its largest natural gas field in Europe. The culture of the inhabitants has absorbed the traditions of neighboring Lower Saxony, which belongs to Germany.
Capital
The provincial capital is the city of Groningen of the same name. Among the Dutch, this large northern settlement is especially popular with students, important educational institutions are located here.
Climate
Experts characterize the climate of Groningen as temperate maritime. Here precipitation and fog are frequent guests. The average temperature in summer is not very high - +17 degrees Celsius, in winter - a little more than zero. Weather patterns are dictated by westerly winds from the North Sea.
Nature
The nature of the province has absorbed the picturesque landscapes and high urbanization. For beautiful places you will have to go outside the city limits, but it's worth it. Rent a bike to explore the endless plains or the cool North Sea coast. In Delfzijl, you can take a walk along the pier, connecting the sightseeing of architecture and enjoying the seascapes.
Main cities: Groningen, Delfzijl, Zuidhorn
Groningen is a lively and dynamic city with a rich history that goes way back to Amsterdam. Already by the 13th century, it was the most important center of Dutch trade, and its dialect became the basis for the language that would later be spoken by the whole country.
Delfzijl is a large (by European standards) port city. There are not many tourists here, but every five years people flock here for the major DelfSail festival, which shows ships from around the world. Havengaden (or Harbor) Days is another nautical-themed event that takes place here every year.
The Zuidhorn is not a particularly popular city among tourists, but for the province in the twentieth century it became a place where the inhabitants of the administrative center flocked in search of better living conditions. In simple words, this is a young and actively developing settlement.
What to see
Directly opposite the Groningen train station is the City Museum. Spread across three islands, it combines antiques and art with colorful and quirky architecture. In fairness, it should be noted that exhibitions of contemporary art can also be found within its walls.
The Prinsenhof has a garden that is not only open to guests. It is an example of a bizarre landscape. In the warm season, open-air music and poetry evenings are held here.
Fans of sporting events will find it interesting to visit the local Nordleys Stadium. It has been operating since 2006 and can accommodate 22.5 thousand fans.
Attractions
Most of the architectural sights are located in the center of Groningen, which is best explored on foot. It is small, but it is in it that bright examples of Dutch architecture from different eras are concentrated.
The medieval building, made in the Gothic style, is located on the central square of the provincial capital. This is Aa Church, dating from the 15th century. Several tombs are kept within its walls, and guests are especially interested in an unusual painting of the 16th century depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ.
St. Martin's Tower is the main architectural ensemble of Groningen. A tall building with bells can be seen from almost everywhere.
In Groningen, it is difficult to ignore one of the oldest universities in the country. It was built in the 17th century and at first specialized in the study of religion, only later the education system became secular. The building is made of red brick, and within its walls it accommodates not only auditoriums, but also science museums.
